  • In this paper, we present a novel method to extract face representation based on multi-resolution spatial pyramid. In our method, a face is subdivided into increasingly finer sub-regions (local regions) and represented at multiple levels of histogram representations. To cope with misaligned problem, patch-based local descriptor extraction has been also developed in a novel way. To preserve multiple levels of detail in local characteristics and also encode holistic spatial configuration, histograms from all levels of spatial pyramid are integrated by using dimensionality reduction and feature combination, leading to our spatial-pyramid face feature representation. We incorporate our proposed face features into general face recognition pipeline and achieve state-of-the-art results on challenging face recognition problems.

  • The present study investigates the effects of rib arrangements and aspect ratios of a rectangular duct simulating the cooling passage of a gas turbine blade. Two different V-shaped rib configurations are tested with the aspect ratios (W/H) of 3 to 6.82. One is the continuous V-shaped rib configuration with $60^{\circ}$ attack angle, and the other is the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle. The square ribs with the pitch to height ratio of 10.0 are installed on the test section in a parallel arrangement for both rib configurations. Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter are changed from 10,000 to 30,000. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure local heat/mass transfer coefficients. For the continuous V-shaped rib configuration, two pairs of counter-rotating vortices are generated in a duct, and high transfer region is formed at the center of the ribbed walls of the duct. However, for the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle, complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the duct due to its geometric feature, and more uniform heat/mass transfer distributions are obtained for all tested cases

  • As collaborative design and configuration design are of increasing importance in product development, it becomes essential to exchange the feature and parametric CAD models among participants. A history-based parametric method has been proposed and implemented. But each translator which exchanges the feature and parametric information tends to be heavy because to implement duplicated functions such as the identification of the selected geometries, mapping between features which have different attributes. Furthermore. because the history-based parametric translator uses the procedural model as the neutral format, which is the XML macro file, the history-based parametric translators need a geometric modeling kernel to generate an internal explicit geometric model. To ease the problem, we implemented a shared integration platform, the TransCAD. The TransCAD separates translators from the XML macro files. The translators for various CAD systems need to communicate with only the TransCAD. To support the communication with the TransCAD, we exposed the functions of the TransCAD by using the Automation APIs, which is developed by Microsoft. The Automation APIs of the TransCAD consist of the part modeling functions, the data extraction functions, and the utility functions. Each translator uses these functions to translate a parametric CAD model from the sending CAD system into the XML format, or from the in format into the model of the receiving CAD system This paper introduces what the TransCAD is and how it works for the exchange of the feature and parametric models.

  • Face membership authentication is to decide whether an incoming person is an enrolled member or not using face recognition, and basically belongs to two-class classification where support vector machine (SVM) has been successfully applied. The previous SVMs used for face membership authentication have been trained and tested using image feature vectors extracted from member face images of each class (enrolled class and unenrolled class). The SVM so trained using image feature vectors extracted from members in the training set may not achieve robust performance in the testing environments where configuration and size of each class can change dynamically due to member's joining or withdrawal as well as where testing face images have different illumination, pose, or facial expression from those in the training set. In this paper, we propose an effective class discriminating feature vector-based SVM for robust face membership authentication. The adopted features for training and testing the proposed SVM are chosen so as to reflect the capability of discriminating well between the enrolled class and the unenrolled class. Thus, the proposed SVM trained by the adopted class discriminating feature vectors is less affected by the change in membership and variations in illumination, pose, and facial expression of face images. Through experiments, it is shown that the face membership authentication method based on the proposed SVM performs better than the conventional SVM-based authentication methods and is relatively robust to the change in the enrolled class configuration.

  • Scoping analyses for the Safety Injection System (SIS) configuration for Korean Next Generation Reactor (KNGR) are peformed in this study. The KNGR SIS consists of four mechanically separated hydraulic trains. Each hydraulic train consisting of a High Pressure Safety Injection (HPSI) pump and a Safety Injection Tank (SIT) is connected to the Direct Vessel Injection (DVI) nozzle located above the elevation of cold leg and thus injects water into the upper portion of reactor vessel annulus. Also, the KNGR is going to adopt the advanced design feature of passive fluidic device which will be installed in the discharge line of SIT to allow more effective use of borated water during the transient of large break LOCA. To determine the feasible configuration and capacity of SIT and HPSI pump with the elimination of the Low Pressure Safety Injection (LPSI) pump for KNGR, licensing design basis evaluations are performed for the limiting large break LOCA. The study shows that the DVI injection with the fluidic device SIT enhances the SIS performance by allowing more effective use of borated water for an extended period of time during the large break LOCA.

  • This study investigates the effects of the spatial elements of the mulit-purpose commercial complex on visitors' circulation pattern and wayfinding by employing method of space syntax, observation, and interview survey. Two commercial complexes were investigated; Techno-mart represented a vertical type and COEX mall rendered a horizontal one. Analysis of the spatial elements using space-syntax method provided a base line for comparing analyses by the two other methods. Analysis of the interview additionally survey identified the factors affecting wayfinding behavior and contributing satisfaction. The findings suggest that level of the effects of the spatial configuration on visitors' circulation pattern is greater in Techno-mart(vertically oriented) than COEX(horizontally). In COEX, for instance, specific route that connects sub-way station and cinema complex carries far more traffic than main route, even though the main route indicates higher degree of integration of spatial configuration. Similar with observation, the degree of integration is corresponding with the satisfaction and easiness of wayfinding behavior In COEX, specific place and feature seem to have more effects on visitors' wayfinding behavior and circulation pattern than the level of integration of spatial configuration.

  • A new electric coil design methodology using the notion of topology optimization is developed. The specific design problem in consideration is to find optimal coil configuration that maximizes the Lorentz force under given magnetic field. Topology optimization is usually formulated using the finite element method, but the novel feature of this method is that no such partial differential equation solver is employed during the whole optimization process. The proposed methodology allows the determination of not only coil shape but also the number of coil turns which is not possible to determine by any existing topology optimization concept and to perform single coil strand identification algorithm. The specific applications are made in the design of two-dimensional fine-pattern focusing coils of an optical pickup actuator. In this method, the concept of equivalent magnetizing current is utilized to calculate the Lorentz force, and the optimal coil configuration is obtained without any initial layout. The method is capable of generating the location and shape of turns of coil. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in optical pickup applications, design problems involving multipolar permanent magnets are considered.

  • This paper introduces a way to realize high-pass, band-stop and all-pass transfer functions using Operational Transconductance Amplifiers (OTAs) and grounded capacitors. The basic circuit configuration is constructed with five OTAs and two grounded capacitors. In the circuit with the proportional block, it is shown that the circuit parameters can be independently set and electronically tuned by the transconductance gains. Although the circuit configuration has been Down, it seems that the feature for realizing the high-pass, the band-pass and the all-pass transfer functions makes the structure more attractive and useful. An example is given together with simulated results by PSPICE.
