  • This paper proposes an acquisition and the representation method of the 3-dimensional information. The proposed range finder system can reduce the computation time by only calculating the ${\triangle}R$ of each pixel compared to the existing methods. We also propose a shape feature extraction method by considering the sign change of the acquired range data. Finally, the effectiveness of this system is demonstrated by several experiments.

  • An automatic grading algorithm was developed to replace the manual trading of white ginseng. The algorithm consists of three consecutive stages, (a) image acquisition and preprocessing, (b) mathematical feature extraction, and (c) grade decision using artificial neural network. Mathematical features such as area ratio, mean and standard deviation of graylevel, skewness of graylevel histogram, and the number of run segment are extracted from five equally divided parts of ginseng. An artificial neural network model was used to classify white ginsengs into three categories. The performance of the algorithm was evaluated using 120 ginseng samples and the rate of successful classification was 74%.

  • Conventional stereo matching techniques are based on the assumption that the features representing an object in left and right images have fixed attribute values. But, in fact, such features may take different values due to the practical stereo image formation and the image acquisition error, and thus the conventional techniques tend to result in the in the incorrect matching of features. In this paper, we propose a stereo matching mathod with a possibilistic view which copes with the possible variability of feature values. As a result, this method decreases the number of incorrect matching features when the values of corresponding features are somewhat large. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown via computer simulation.

  • The new algorithm technique is necessary to incorporate for analyzing and evaluating extreme condition like a nuclear accident. In this study, the combined methodology for measuring the three-dimensional space was compared with SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) and SURF (Speeded-Up Robust Feature) algorithm. The suggested method can be used for the acquisition of spatial information using the robot vision in the districted area of the nuclear facilities. As a result, these data would be helpful for identify the damaged part, degree of damage and determination of recovery sequences.

  • This paper includes an analysis of face recognition algorithm to design hardware and presents fixed point model in accordance with it. Face recognition algorithm detects the positions of face and eyes to make use of their feature data to detect and verify human faces. It distinguishes a particular user by means of comparing them with registered face features. To implement the face recognition algorithm into hardware, we developed its fixed point model by analyzing face feature parameters, face acquisition data, and feature detection parameters and operation structure.

  • The global value chain, as a major feature of the contemporary global economic system, has been mainly led by developed countries. Whereas developing countries have taken the relatively low value-added activities and this made geographical imbalances in value distribution. This imbalance in value distribution, however, began to gradually alleviated. Related to this phenomenon, the purpose of this research is to analyze the factors affecting factors. Focused on the method of upgrading the industry in the global value chain, the impact on the acquisition of value-added in developing countries was analyzed among the various factors to achieve the research purpose. Panel analysis was conducted on all industries, food and tobacco industries, textile and clothing industries, computer and electornics industries, and automobile industries of the OECD Value-Added Trade Data (TiVA). As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that in all industries, value-added acquisition in developing countries was improved by increased total production, high value-added product production and participation in early stage. The analysis results by detailed industry showed slightly different patterns depending on the characteristics of each industry.

  • Biometrics is getting more and more attention in recent years for security and other concerns. So far, only fingerprint recognition has seen limited success for on-line security check, since other biometrics verification and identification systems require more complicated and expensive acquisition interfaces and recognition processes. Hand-Geometry has been used for biometric verification and identification because of its acquisition convenience and good performance for verification and identification performance. Hence, it can be a good candidate for online checks. Therefore, this paper proposes a Hand-Geometry recognition system based on geometrical features of hand. From anatomical point of view, human hand can be characterized by its length, width, thickness, geometrical composition, shapes of the palm, and shape and geometry of the fingers. This paper proposes thirty relevant features for a Hand-Geometry recognition system. However, during experimentation, it was discovered that length measured from the tip of the finger was not a reliable feature. Hence, we propose a new technique based on Genetic Algorithm for extraction of the center of nail bottom, in order to use it for the length feature.

  • Accurate river discharge is the most important factor in managing river basins and for successfully maintaining total maximum daily loads in Korea. It is not easy to measure the discharge directly in large rivers owing to physical and environmental constraints, even after investing much time and money. Recently, to overcome these historical drawbacks in river discharge measurement, we have developed the Automatic Discharge Acquisition & Management System (ADAMS) that scans the river cross-section and measures each cell $(1m{\times}1m)$ velocity using HADCP. The hardware system is composed of an HADCP sensor and winch, as well as a PC and software system for the discharge calculation module and hardware control module. It is controlled remotely via the internet and uses the velocity-depth integration method and the velocity-contour method for calculating river discharges. The characteristics of ADAMS are a ubiquitously accessible system, featuring real time automatic discharge measurement, remote control via the internet. The results using ADAMS at the Jindong stage site show less than 5% uncertainty and are 4 times more efficient than the ADCP & Q-boat system. This system can be used to measure any large river, river mouth or tributary river affected by backwater, all of which have a very difficult measuring real time discharge. The next generation of ADAMS will feature an upgrade to increase portability and GPS integration.

  • This study presents early crack detection of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) under varying temperature and humidity conditions using an instantaneous electrical impedance acquisition system. SFRC has the self-sensing capability of electrical impedance without sensor installation thanks to the conductivity of embedded steel fibers, making it possible to effectively monitor cracks initiated in SFRC. However, the electrical impedance is often sensitively changed by environmental effects such as temperature and humidity variations. Thus, the extraction of only crack-induced feature from the measured impedance responses is a crucial issue for the purpose of structural health monitoring. In this study, the instantaneous electrical impedance acquisition system incorporated with SFRC is developed. Then, temperature, humidity and crack initiation effects on the impedance responses are experimentally investigated. Based on the impedance signal pattern observation, it is turned out that the temperature effect is more predominant than the crack initiation and humidity effects. Various crack steps are generated through bending tests, and the corresponding impedance damage indices are extracted by compensating the dominant temperature effect. The test results reveal that propagated cracks as well as early cracks are successfully detected under temperature and humidity variations.
