  • The purpose of this study is to examine the expressional characteristics and effects of Diabolism image that appeared in fashion illustration. The concept of evil from ancient times is arranged with more basic pain, unhappiness, breakdown, fear, ignorance, sadness, imperfection, death, disease, and ugliness than it can be understandable in modern society. However, as the concept of evil is included in sacred ground of art and is begun to understand by the ugliness of broad sense, the evil and ugliness were recognized as subordinate concepts which fertilizing beauty. Also, image characteristics of Diabolism in pop culture are taking charge roles that remove visual discordance to decadent and mysterious beauty and trying to find new beauty by presentation of bad-tasted style. The aesthetic and expressional characteristics of Diabolism in modem visual media have something in common which is classified into five shapes: Negative image, Symbolic line and color, Transformation, Devilish shape, and Fantastic image. The Diabolism expressions in fashion illustration since 1980 show the possibility of image expression as a new technical field because they differ from existing expression methods and viewpoints of beauty. Therefore, the practical use of devilish image to express excessive aesthetic sense can expand the extent of image expression.

The participants were ten spouses of gastric cancer patients who had some kind of treatment at the hospital. They were asked open-ended and descriptive questions in order for them to talk about their experiences in their own terms. As the interveiw progressed the questions became more specific to discuss themes and working hypotheses that emerged from the analysis of previous interviews. All interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed for the analysis. Constant the core category that was emerged from the comparative analysis is “magmaggam” which can be described as a psychological distress due to a high level of uncertainty regarding the health of the patient and the future of the caregivers. Psychological distress includes several emotional feelings such as frustration. anxiety, fear, guilty, and self depreciation. Subcategories or strategies related to the core category are 1) managing illness, 2) using folk medicine, 3) giving the patient a reason to live, 4) being patient, 5) losing reality, 6) anticipatory experience on the patient's death and parting, and 7) changing interpersonal relationships. The results of this study would help clinical nurses to develop nursing intervention to help spouses of gastric cancer patients establish efficient coping strategies in dealing with the problems they face.

  • Purpose: To understand the meaning of the lived experience with Person under train (PUT) for train or subway operators. Methods: The study was built on hermeneutic phenomenological themes from individual interviews of present-day train or subway operators in South Korea. Eight participants were selected to participate in the study. All qualitative data were analyzed using the heuristic guides of Van Manen. Results: Four fundamental lifeworld themes and eight sub themes emerged in the findings. The first theme of spatiality had'the place pressed by the darkness' and 'the train drags me there'. The second theme, corporeality had 'a foreboding fear', and 'debris of death that gets stuck in the whole body'. The temporality theme had'distorted time in chaos', and 'memory trapped in time'. Finally the last existential theme of relationality had 'intrapersonal encounter' and 'resentment and guilt'. Conclusion: The four existential lifeworld themes provided a framework for in-depth investigation of the operator's "lived experience." This leads to clear understanding of effects of PUT experience on related individuals. The findings imply that specific active nursing intervention strategies are necessary in order to treat affected train operators, and to prevent further issues in their work and private life.

  • One of the most significant additions to the Warsaw Convention liability system, brought about by the coming into force of the Montreal Convention 1999(MC 99), was the creation of the new so-called fifth jurisdiction, whereby an Article 17 action for damages for passanger bodily injury or death only, may be brought at the option of the claimant/plaintiff. The fifth jurisdiction-the pernanent residence of the passenger at the time of the accident, provided that the carrier has a specified business presence in that jurisdiction-was one of the provisions of MC99 that provoked the most debate at the Montreal Conference leading to the adoption of MC99. Some scholars in China fear that the fifth jurisdiction will be abused after the MC99 came into force to China in 2005. The present article argues that the fifth jurisdiction would not be abused as long as such international private doctrines as forum non-conveniens are applied by the trial court appropriately. The article also points out that the challenge before the legislative body of China is to amend the civil aviation law and other related laws so that to solve the conflicts among the laws and meet the obligations provided by the MC99.

  • Subcultural style is the center of subcultural identity and the clothes and adornments are the most visible symbol of membership. The Goth subculture has associated tastes in music, aesthetics, and fashion. The style symbolized the strong subjective subcultural identity held by most Goths and acted as the practical basis to demonstrate their commitment to the subculture. This study investigates the aesthetic and the style of Goth subculture in its heyday of 1980s which has continued to affect mainstream fashion and culture since its birth. In order to inquire the concept of subculture and its style, this study executes literature survey as well as investigates the images of street style magazines to analyze the visual elements. The stylistic and the aesthetic characteristics of Goth subcultural style analyzed in this study are grouped into four categories as follows: first, Victoriana, which embodies the fear of death and the nostalgia for the past using Victorian morning dresses and corsets, second, vampirism, in that some Goths who are fascinated by vampires are costumed in vampire figures to advocate diabolism and decadence, third, sexual ambiguity of male Goths which emphasizes feminine appearance in the pursuit of androgyny, and fourth, sexual fetish of female Goths which represents aggressive eroticism utilizing fetish paraphernalia.

  • This study attempted to identify the experiences of nursing students' participation in cadaver practice and provide a basis for understanding students' experiences in cadaver practice, which can be reflected in the development of programs for them. By applying the content analysis method according to the guidelines by Krippendorff to analyze the meaning of the experience of participating in cadaver practice among 80 nursing students who participated in cadaver practice at K University in W-si, Gangwon-do, a total of 4 areas, 13 categories, and 25 meaningful statements were derived. The categories included "worried," "surprised," and "fear" in the anxiety domain; "interesting," "knowing," and "focused" in the immersion domain; "value of life," "gratitude and remembrance," "thinking about donation," "facing death," and "precious body" in the reflection domain; and "motivation" and "sense of accomplishment" in the growth domain. The results of this study will help to understand the physical and psychological reactions that nursing students may experience during cadaver practice, and will provide a basis for developing various strategies such as counseling, education, and reflection programs in conjunction with cadaver practice to help nursing students cope with stress, develop a sense of ethical responsibility, and develop a positive self-image as nursing students in order to be successful in cadaver practice. This study is also significant because it provides a basis for preventive program interventions for experiences related to the negative effects of cadaver practice.

  • Purpose: This article is aimed at broadening the perspectives of nursing by applying Heidegger's philosophical reasoning and views to nursing beliefs. Methods: Heidegger's main concepts on a human's way of being were the source for examining the encounter between care-receiver and care-giver in nursing. In addition, the paper illustrates the attitudes that nurses must present to their care-receiver in existential nursing. Results: As nurses and care-receivers experience existential crises due to anxiety about death and fear over uncontrollable situations, they both raise questions about the significance of their existences. By putting their deep reflections on these questions into nursing practice, nurses can exist as "Mitdasein" and be open to a number of possibilities in nursing. Conclusion: Nurses must be open to a number of possibilities in nursing by embracing various experiences of life and individuality without criticism, and pursuing the existing lives of their counterparts as well as their owns. They are able to take this attitude by raising fundamental questions about life and the existence of human beings through ceaseless reflections on their experiences, then implementing the result of these reflections in their lives and nursing practices.

  • At present, in Korea, due to developments in medicine and technology and an increasing mean lifespan, the expected lifetime for elderly people is increasing (at 70 years, the expected additional lifespan is 14.8 years for males and 18.3 years for females). However, among all causes of death, malignant neoplasm is ranked first for all ages. Further, the incidence rate of oral cancer tends to increase with age. Thus, oral and maxillofacial surgeons have increased opportunity to experience the 'oldest old' patients with oral cancer. Elderly patients commonly have several comorbidities, poor general condition, limited socioeconomic support, fear of various postoperative complications, and perception of short for the rest of their life. In this situation, the patient, caregiver, and surgeon often choose undergraded treatment rather than standard treatment for oral squamous cell carcinoma owing to patient age. In elderly patients with oral cancer, ablation of tumor or reconstructive surgery is challenging for surgeons. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons must evaluate carefully the patient's medical condition and make a decision regarding treatment plans after sufficient discussion with patient and caregivers. We review the literature to consider the factors involved for deciding on a treatment plan regarding surgery in elderly patients with oral cancer.
