A spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of Fe(III) in aqueous solution with 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonic acid(Tiron) as a fluorimetric reporter was developed. Tiron, which is very soluble in water,is a good fluorimetric reagent. However, when Tiron was complexed with Fe(III), the fluorescent intensity was decreased proportionally with the concentration of Fe(III) by a quenching effect. The excitation and fluorescene wavelength of Tiron showing the quenching effect by Fe(III) at pH 4.5 were 312 nm and 341 nm, respectively. The highest sensitivities were shown at Tiron concentration of $1.0{\times}10^{-2}M$. To enhance the quenching effect, the Fe(III)-Tiron complex solution was heated to 80$^{\circ}C$ for 90 minutes. As for Fe(III), the most interfering ion was Cu(II). The interference effects could be mostly eliminated by pH adjustment or by adding EDTA. The concentration ranges showing the linear response to Fe(III) was from $5.0{\times}10^{-7}M\;to\;6.0{\times}10^{-5}M$ With this proposed method, the detection limits of Fe(III) was $2.8{\times}10^{-6}M$. Recovery of Fe(lII) in a synthetic sample was almost quantitative. Based on experimental results, it is proposed that the above technique can be applied to the practical determination of Fe(III).
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of chemical cleaning of corrosion product on cooling system made of copper as a basic material and using cooling water as pure water. We studied chemical cleaning condition that minimizes the influence on basic material by means of EDTA solution so as to eliminate the slurry in cooling system. In addition, the proper amount of NALCO-39L (Nitrite-Borate-BZT mixture) as a inhibitor was determined in order to protect the copper in cooling system against corrosion after chemical cleaning and the effect of corrosion resistance on the copper surface treated was excelent in comparison with surface untreated. As a result, we found that the main components of sludge in cooling system produced by corrosion of copper were $Cu_2O$, CuO, Cu, and Fe. The optimum condition of chemical cleaning was 400ppm EDTA solution at $60^{\circ}C$. Inhibitor concentration needed to treat the surface of pure copper was 15~20ppm per unit area and corrosion rate of copper treated with 500ppm inhibitor solution for 72 hrs at $60^{\circ}C$ was remarkably decreased as compared with that of pure copper.
Kinetic characteristics dependent on several factors such as iron mineral and organic solvents were investigated. When F $e^{0}$ , FeS and Fe $S_2$ were used as mediators, minerals affecting reaction rate were in the following order : $Fe_{0}$ 0/ > FeS > $FeS_2$ when in contact $C_2$C $l_{6}$ . The more chloride substituted, the higher reaction rate were observed. The reaction rates were dependent on pH, shaking rate, temperature and specific surface area. 1, 10-phenanthroline and EDTA degradation rates were fast, indicating that they adsorbed on the surface of the iron which makes the electron transfer reaction easy. Nitrate which has $\pi$* orbital of molecular can increase electron transfer rate because it is delocalized in its entity. The reaction rates were not affected by hydroquinone. Degradation rates were much enhanced with naturally occurring kaolinite because of the surface corrosion of Fe mineral. However, The reaction rate was not affected by F $e^{2+}$ or S $O_4$$^{2-}$ presented in solution.n.
A new miniaturized all solid-state contact Fe (III)-selective PVC membrane electrode based on Fe (II) phthalocyanine as a neutral carrier was described. The effects of the membrane composition and foreign ions on the electrode performance was investigated. The best performance was obtained with a membrane containing 32% poly (vinyl chloride), 64% dioctylsebacate, 3% Fe (II) phthalocyanine, and 1% potassium tetrakis (p-chlorophenyl) borate. The electrode showed near Nernstian response of $26.04{\pm}0.95mV/decade$ over the wide linear concentration range $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-1}M$, and a very low limit of detection $1.8{\pm}0.5{\times}10^{-7}M$. The potentiometric response of the developed electrode was independent at pH 3.5-5.7. The lifetime of the electrode was approximately 3 months and the response time was very short (< 7 s). It exhibited excellent selectivity towards Fe (III) over various cations. The miniaturized all solid-state contact Fe (III)-selective membrane electrode was successfully applied as an indicator electrode for the potentiometric titration of $1.0{\times}10^{-3}M$ Fe (III) ions with a $1.0{\times}10^{-2}M$ EDTA and the direct determination of Fe (III) ions in real water samples.
The chemical warfare agents (CWAs) have been developed for offensive or defensive purposes and used as chemical weapons in war and terrorism. The CWAs are exposed to the natural environment, transported through the water system and then eventually contaminate soil and groundwater. Therefore, effective decontamination technology to remediate CWAs are needed. The CWAs are extremely dangerous and prodution is strictly prohibited, therefore, it is difficult to use CWAs even in experimental purpose. In this study, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was chosen as a model representative CWA because it is a simulant of anti-plant CWAs and one of the major component of agent orange. The optimum degradation conditions such as oxidant:activator ratio were determined. The effects of hydroxylamine and chelating agents such as citric acid (CA), oxalic acid (OA), malic acid (MA), and EDTA addition to increase Fe2+ activation were also investigated. Scavenger experiments using tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and ethanol confirmed that although both sulfate (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) existed in Fe2+-persulfate system, sulfate radical was the predominant radical. To promote the Fe2+ activator effect, the effect of hydroxylamine as a reducing agent was investigated. In chelating agents assisted Fe2+-persulfate oxidation, the addition of 2 mM of CA and MA enhanced 2,4-D degradation. In contrast, EDTA and OA inhibited the 2,4-D removal due to steric hindrance effect.
Extracellular neutral pretense of Streptomyces rimosus producing oxytetracycline was purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation, DEAE Sephadex A-50 chromatography and Sephadex G-100 gel filteration, and was showed single band on the cathodic gel electrophoresis. The optimum pH and temperature of the enzyme were pH 8.0 and 6$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enzyme was activated about 80% in the presence of Co$^{2+}$ ion, and strongly inhibited by Hg$^{2+}$, Fe$^{2+}$ and chelatig agent, EDTA. Molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be 12, 000. The Km value of the enzyme of casein as a substrate was 2.7$\times$10$^{-4}$M.
Serratia marcescens ATCC 25419 protease was purified to homogeneity by ammonium sulfate treatment, and DEAE-cellulose anion exchange chromatography. The specific activity of the enzyme was increased 448-fold during purification with an overall yield of 43.0%. Metal reactivation on the purified protease from S. marcescens was studied. S. marcescens protease was a metalloenzyme to be completely inhibited its activity by EDTA and the enzyme outstandingly inhibited by Hg, Fe, Cu, but the activity was increased approximately 20% by Co. The reactivation of the apoenzyme was effective with Mn, Co, Zn in pH range from 6 to 8. Among metalloenzymes prepared to the addition of Mn, Co, Zn to restore the degree of activity of native enzyme, Zn-enzyme was similar to the native enzyme in respects with enzyme activity, alkali-inactivation, thermo-stability.
The test possibility of L-ascorbic acid(AsA) assay by ascorbate oxidase(A.O) solution obtained from cucumber was estimated. The results obtained were summarized as follow. The difference of absorbance before and after oxidation of AsA by A.O solution was proportional to the AsA concentration. Iso- AsA compared to same concentration of AsA was 97% response. Therefore, the 0 specificity on Iso- AsA a was deficient. On the sucrose, glucose, fructose were coexisted from 5 times, 500 times of AsA concentration, none of them were affected by any level of AsA concentration. In the case of EDTA, it was not nearly affected that EDTA was coexisted 50 times of AsA concentration, but EDTA Inhibited considerably from 500 times of AsA concentration. The effect of citric acid on the AsA concentration was not in the same level of AsA, however, it was slightly inhibited from 5 times, 50 times of AsA concentration and 500 times of AsA inhibited remarkably As known L-AsA was catalycally autooxidated by Cu2+ and Fe2+. They were not nearly affected In the above 0.01M level on the Ash assay. However, Fe3+ ion was neither nearly affected in the 0.001M level nor In the above 0.01M level on the AsA assay.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Pine needle extract on lipid oxidation and free radical reaction in iron sources reacted with active oxygen species. The results were summarized as follow; The pine needle extracts didn`t show a distinct effect on reduction of lipid oxidation if the iron ion didn`t exist in oil emulsion. The pine needle extracts played role as a strong chelating agents to bind iron ion if Ferrous iron(Fe\ulcorner) exist in oil emulsion. Ferric iron(Fe) was lower effect than Ferrous iron(Fe) on free radical reaction in oil emulsion. And also, the Fe\ulcorner reacted with pine needle extract did not show distinct effect on free radical reaction, compared to Fe\ulcorner reacted with pine needle extract. And also, Pine needle extracts reacted with H\ulcornerO\ulcorner were tended to show a low oxygen scavenging ability in case of H\ulcornerO\ulcorner only was existed, compared to those of H\ulcornerO\ulcorner + Fe\ulcorner complex. Pine needle extracts were the most powerful Fe\ulcorner binding agents, compared to other strong synthetic antioxidants such as EDTA and DTPA.

This study is conducted to evaluate the effects of chelating agents for improving plant growth and reusing accumulated nutrients in soils of plastic film house. Two experiments were carried out at follows: i) The incubation test was conducted using soils treated with 0, 300 mM of EDTA and DTPA to examine the availability of nutrients. ii) For the pot test, chinese cabbages were cultivated in soils with 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 5 mM of EDTA and DTPA to examine the impacts of plant growth response. The application of chelating agents increased ther availability of soil nutrients in the following order: DTPA > EDTA > control. Inorganic concentration of chinese cabbages in DTPA treatments consderably increased in nitrogen, phosphate, iron and aluminium contents than that of the other treatments. The optimal concentration of DTPA for vigorous plant growth as 0.5 mM. Thus, DTPA was more effective than other chelating agents for healty growth of cabbages and the availability of nutrients accumulated in plastic film house.
