In the compound casting between the aluminum alloy and the cast iron, the iron component may be dissolved from the cast iron during the process and mixed into the aluminum melt, thereby forming various iron-containing intermetallic compounds and significantly deteriorating the tensile properties of the aluminum alloy. On the other hand, unlike Fe, which is added as an impurity, Cu is added to improve the mechanical properties of the aluminum alloy. In this study, the change in microstructure and tensile properties of aluminum alloys due to the addition of Fe and Cu was investigated. A large amount of iron-containing compounds such as coarse Al5FeSi phases were formed when the iron content was 1% or more, and the tensile properties were significantly reduced. In the case of the aluminum alloy to which Cu was added, an Al2Cu phase was additionally formed and the tensile strength was clearly improved.
Some alloying elements such as Cr, B, Ti and Si were added individually or as a mixture to Fe-30 at.%Al alloys. The alloys were melted using an arc furnace and then heat-treated for homogenization at 1000$^{\circ}C$ for 7 days and followed by rolling at 1000$^{\circ}C$. The alloying elements on rolling characteristics were investigated by the microstructures and fracture mode before and after rolling. The microstructures before rolling showed that all of the alloys had equiaxed grains. On the other hand, the microstructures of rolling plane as well as its perpendicular plane became elongated after rolling. The alloys such as Fe-30Al, Fe-30Al-3Ti, Fe-30Al-0.5B, Fe-30Al-5Cr and Fe-30Al-3Ti-0.5B revealed better rolling behaviour from the point that intergranular and cleavage fractures were not fundamentally occurred. But the addition of 5Ti or 3Si to Fe-Al alloys had detrimental effects. The Ti-added alloy system such as Fe-30Al-5Ti, Fe-30Al-5Ti-5Cr, Fe-30Al-3Ti-5Cr and Fe-30Al-5Ti-0.5B were cracked through grain and showed cleavage fracture. The Si-added alloy system such as Fe-30Al-5Si, Fe-27Al-3Si and Fe-27Al-5Cr-3Si were cracked along the grain boundary and showed intergranular fracture. $DO_3{\leftrightarrow}B_2$ transition temperature of Fe-30at.%Al alloy was 520$^{\circ}C$, whereas the addition of 3Ti and 3Ti+0.5B comparably increased the temperature to 797 and 773$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

The magnetic inductance of nanocrystalline $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$ and an amorphous FeSiB powder sheet has been investigated to identify RFID performance. The powder was mixed with binder and solvent and tape-casted to form films. Results show annealing significantly influenced on the inductance of the material. The surface oxidation of the particles was the main reason for the reduced inductance. The maximum inductance of $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$ alloy was about $88{\mu}H$ at 17.4 MHz, about 65% greater compared to the FeSiB alloy. The higher inductance in the nanocrystalline alloy indicates it may be used as a potential replacement of current RFID materials.

In order to develop alloy resistance in aggressive sulphat ion, the corrosion behavior of metallic glasses $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$, $Ni_{82,3}Cr_7Fe_3Si_{4.5}B_{3.2}$ and $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$ (at %) at different concentrations of $H_2SO_4$ solutions was examined by electrochemical methods and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Microscopy (XPS) analyses. The corrosion kinetics and passivation behavior was studied. A direct proportion was observed between the corrosion rate and acid concentration in the case of $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$ and $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$ alloys. Critical concentration was observed in the case of $Ni_{82,3}Cr_7Fe_3Si_{4.5}B_{3.2}$ alloy. The influence of the alloying element is reflected in the increasing resistance of the protective film. XPS analysis confirms that the protection film on the $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$ alloy was NiS which is less protective than that formed on Cr containing alloys. The corrosion rate of $Ni_{82,3}Cr_7Fe_3Si_{4.5}B_{3.2}$ and $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$. alloys containing 7% and 13% Cr are $7.90-26.1{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/y which is lower about 43-54 times of the alloy $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$ (free of Cr). The high resistance of $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$ alloy at the very aggressive media may due to thicker passive film of $Cr_2O_3$ which hydrated to hydrated chromium oxyhydroxide.
For the amorphous F $e_{78}$$B_{13}$S $i_{9-x}$G $e_{x}$ alloy, thermal analysis and measurements of the magnetic properties were carried out. As the content of Ge increased, the crystallization temperature was decreased and the Curie temperature was increased, and the tendencies were almost linear. The core loss of the amorphous alloy for x=1.7, field annealed at optimized condition, was 0.057 W/kg(l.0T, 60Hz), which was about 30% lower than that of no Ge added amorphous alloy (basic composition). Such a low core loss characteristics was thought to be caused by the lower coercive force and good squareness of B-H loop of the alloy.y.y.
Effect of iron and manganese contents on die soldering reaction has been studied in Al-9wt.%Si-0.3wt.%Mg alloy. Ternary ${\alpha}_{hcp}-Al_8Fe_2Si$ and ${\alpha}_{bcc}-Al_8Fe_2Si$ intermetallic compounds formed by interaction diffusion between Al-Si-Mg system alloy melt and SKD61 die steel surface. Thickness of soldering reaction layer in die steel surface decreased as Fe and Mn contents of the melts increased : When Fe content of Al-9wt.%Si-0.3wt.%Mg melts at constant 0.5wt%Mn content was 0.15wt.%, 0.45wt.% and 0.6wt.%, thickness of soldered layer of each alloy was $64.5{\mu}m,\;57.3{\mu}m$ and $46.9{\mu}m$ respectively. For Mn content of the alloy melts at constant 0.45wt.%Fe content was 0.30wt.%, 0.50wt.% and 0.70wt.%, thickness of soldered layer of each alloy was $66.1{\mu}m,\;57.3{\mu}m$ and $48.3{\mu}m$ respectively.
A lean alloy is defined as a low alloy steel that minimizes the content of the alloying elements, while maintaining the characteristics of the sintered alloy. The purpose of this study is to determine the change in microstructure and mechanical properties due to the addition of silicon or tin in Fe-Mo-P, Fe-Mn-P, and Fe-Mo-Mn-P alloys. Silicon- or tin-added F-Mo-P, Fe-Mn-P, and Fe-Mo-Mn-P master alloys were compacted at 700 MPa and subsequently sintered under a $H_2-N_2$ atmosphere at $1120^{\circ}C$. The sintered density of three alloy systems decreases under the same compacting pressure due to dimensional expansion with increasing Si content. As the diffusion rate in the Fe-P-Mo system is higher than that in the Fe-P-Mn system, the decrease in the sintered density is the largest in the Fe-P-Mn system. The sintered density of Sn added alloys does not change with the increasing Sn content due to the effect of non-dimensional changes. However, the effect of Si addition on the transverse rupture strengthening enhancement is stronger than that of Sn addition in these lean alloys.
The effects of Mg and Si contents on the microstructure and mechanical properties in Al-Mg alloy (ALDC6) were investigated. The results showed that phase fraction and size of $Mg_2Si$ and $Al_{15}(Fe,Mn)_3Si_2$ phase in the microstructure of Al-Mg alloy were increased as the Mg and Si contents were raised from 2.5 to 3.5 wt%. With Si content of 1.5 wt%, freezing range of the alloy was significantly reduced and solidification became more complex during the final stage of solidification. While there was no significant influence of Mg contents on mechanical properties, Si contents up to 1.5 wt%, strongly affected the mechanical properties. Especially elongation was reduced by about a half with more than 1.0 wt%Si in the alloy. The bending and impact strength were decreased with increased amount of Si in the alloy, as well. The lowered mechanical properties are because of the growth of particle shaped coarse $Mg_2Si$ phase and precipitation of the needle like $\beta$-AlFeSi in the microstructure at the last region to solidify due to presence of excess amount of Si in the alloy.
The microstructure and bond strength were investigated on the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints brazed by Ag-5at%Ti alloy. Ag-5at%Ti-2at%Fe and -5at%Fe brazing alloys were also used to see the effects of Fe addition on the bond strength of SiC/SiC brazed joints. Brazing temperature and brazing gap were selected and examined as brazing variables. The microstructure of SiC/SiC brazed joints was affected by Fe addition to the Ag-5at%Ti alloy, but the bond strength was not. Increasing brazing temperature also changed the microstructure of $Ti_5Si_3$ reaction layer and brazing alloy matrix of the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints, but not the bond strength. Brazing gap had a great effects on the bond strength. Decreasing brazing gap from 0.2 mm to 0.1 mm in SiC/SiC brazing increased the bond strength from 187 MPa to 263 MPa and, in SiC/mild steel brazing, from 189 MPa to 212 MPa. It was concluded that the most important parameter on the bond strength in SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazing was the relative ratio between brazing gap and specimen size.

The influences of vanadium addition on the cavitation erosion resistance pf Fe-Cr-Ni-Si-C hardfacing alloy were investigated using a vibratory apparatus up to 30 hrs. It was shown that 1wt.%V additioned alloy improved the resistance to cavitation damage. However, further increase in V content up to 2wt.% reduced the cavitation erosion resistance. It was considered that the addition of V developed the cavitation erosion resistance by reducing the stacking fault energy of Fe-Cr-Ni-Si-C alloy. However, the further increase in V content seemed to reduce the cavitation erosion resistance by increasing the matrix/carbide interfacial area, which was the preferential sites of the cavitation damage.
