  • In order to broaden the range of application of light weight aluminum alloys, it is necessary to enhance the mechanical properties of the alloys and combine them with other materials, such as cast iron. In this study, the effects of adding small amounts of Cu and Zr to the Al-Si-Mg based alloy on tensile properties and corrosion characteristics were investigated, and the effect of the addition on the interfacial compounds layer with the cast iron was also analyzed. Although the tensile strength of the Al-Si-Mg alloy was not significantly affected by the additions of Cu and Zr, the corrosion resistance in 3.5 %NaCl solution was found to be somewhat lowered in this research. The influence of Cu and Zr addition on the type and thickness of the interfacial compounds layer formed during compound casting with cast iron was not significant, and the main interfacial compounds were identified to be Al5FeSi and Al8Fe2Si phases, as in the case of the Al-Si-Mg alloys.

  • The effects of annealing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Si alloys fabricated by high-energy ball milling (HEBM) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) were investigated. The HEBM-free sintered alloy primarily contained Mg2Si, Q-AlCuMgSi, and Si phases. Meanwhile, the HEBM-sintered alloy contains Mg-free Si and θ-Al2Cu phases due to the formation of MgO, which causes Mg depletion in the Al matrix. Annealing without and with HEBM at 500℃ causes partial dissolution and coarsening of the Q-AlCuMgSi and Mg2Si phases in the alloy and dissolution of the θ-Al2Cu phase in the alloy, respectively. In both alloys, a thermally stable α-AlFeSi phase was formed after long-term heat treatment. The grain size of the sintered alloys with and without HEBM increased from 0.5 to 1.0 ㎛ and from 2.9 to 6.3 ㎛, respectively. The hardness of the sintered alloy increases after annealing for 1 h but decreases significantly after 24 h of annealing. Extending the annealing time to 168 h improved the hardness of the alloy without HEBM but had little effect on the alloy with HEBM. The relationship between the microstructural factors and the hardness of the sintered and annealed alloys is discussed.

  • Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of Al-6Si-2Cu alloy for engine mount bracket prepared by gravity casting (as-cast) and die-casting (as-diecast) process have been investigated. For the microstructural characterization, the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) analyses are conducted. For the intermetallic phases, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) are also conducted with quantitative and qualitative analysis. Micro Vickers hardness and static tensile test are achieved in order to measure mechanical properties of alloys. Secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of as-cast and as-diecast show 37um and 18um, respectively. A large amount of coarsen eutectic Si, $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase and Fe-rich phases are identified in the Al-6Si-2Cu alloy. Mechanical properties of gravity casting alloy are much higher than those of die-casting alloy. Especially, yield strength and elongation of gravity casting alloy show 2 times higher than die-casting alloy. After shot peening, shot peening refined the surface grains and Si particles of the alloys by plastic deformation. The surface hardness value shows that shot peening alloy has higher value than unpeening alloy.

  • Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of Al-6Si-2Cu alloy for lightweight automotive parts were investigated. The test specimens were prepared by gravity casting process. Solution heat treatments were applied to as-cast alloys to improve mechanical properties. The microstructure of the gravity casting specimen presents a typical dendrite structure, having a secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of $37{\mu}m$. In addition to the Al matrix, a large amount of coarsened eutectic Si, $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase, and Fe-rich phases were identified. After solution heat treatment, single-step solution heat treatments were found to considerably improve the spheroidization of the eutectic Si phase. Two-step solution treatments gave rise to a much improved spheroidization. The mechanical properties of the two-step solution heat treated alloy have been shown to lead to higher values of properties such as tensile strength and microhardness. Consequentially, the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of Al alloy have been successfully characterized and are available for use with other basic data for the development of lightweight automotive parts.

  • The densification behavior of Al-20Si-5.5Fe-1.2Mg-0.5Mn powders was investigated through micro-structure analysis of sintered specimens. The specimens sintered in vacuum or in high purity (99.999%) nitrogen showed porous near-surface microstructures. The densification of near-surface part was enhanced by means of ultra-high purity (99.9999%) nitrogen atmosphere. The relationship between slow densification and oxide surfaces of Al alloy powders was discussed. And the effects of Mg addition, nitrogen gas, and humidity on densification were discussed. In addition, the rapid growth of primary Si crystals above the critical temperature was reported.

  • In this study we investigated magnetism and magnetostriction of B2-structured FeX (X = Al, Si, Ni, Ga, Ge, and Sn) using a first-principles method, in order to survey the possibility of developing a transition metal based magnetostriction material. The Full-potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave method was employed for solving the Kohn-Sham equation within the generalized gradient approximation for exchange-correlation interaction between electrons. FeX alloys are stabilized in ferromagnetic states except for the FeSi and FeGe alloys. Magnetostrcition coefficients of FeX (X = Al, Ni, Ga, and Sn) were calculated to be -5, +6, -84, -522ppm, respectively. It is noteworthy that the magnetostriction coefficient (-522ppm) of FeSn is larger than that (+400ppm) of Gafenol.

  • The reduction of the Nb content in the $(Fe_{0.75}B_{0.20}Si_{0.05})_{96}Nb_4$ bulk metallic glass (BMG) has been studied. The glass-forming ability (GFA) is reduced by decreasing the Nb content, but it can be enhanced by replacing partially Fe by Co. Furthermore, the saturation magnetization of the $(Fe_{0.8}Co_{0.2})_{76}B_{18}Si_3Nb_3$ BMG is 1.35 T, being with 13% larger than that of the base alloy $(Fe_{0.75}B_{0.20}Si_{0.05})_{96}Nb_4$. $(Fe_{0.8}Co_{0.2})_{76}B_{18}Si_3Nb_3$ BMG exhibits slightly larger $B_{800}$ (the magnetic flux density at 800 A/m) and smaller core losses (20%-30%) compared with the commercial Fe-6.5 mass% Si steel.

  • Three different white cast irons alloyed with Cr and Si were prepared in order to study their distribution be-havior in matrices and carbides. The specimens were produced using a 15kg-capacity high frequency induction fur-nace. Melts were super-heated to $1600^{\circ}C$, and poured at $1550^{\circ}C$ into a pepset mold. Three combinations of the alloys were selected so as to observe the distribution behavior of Cr and Si : 0.5%C-25.0%Cr-1.0%Si(alloy No. 1), 0.5%C-5.0%Cr-1.0%Si(alloy No. 2) and 2.0%C-5.0%Cr-1.0%Si(alloy No. 3). Cellular $M_7C_3$ carbides-$\delta$ferrite eutectic were developed at $\delta$ferrite liquid interfaces in the alloy No. 1 while only traces of $M_7C_3$ carbides-$\delta$ferrite eutectic were precipitated in the alloy No. 2. With the addition of 2.0% C and 5.0% Cr, ledeburitic $M_3C$ carbides instead of cellular $M_7C_3$ carbides were precipitated in the alloy No. 3. Cr was distributed preferentially to the $M_7C_3$ carbides rather than to the matrix structure while more Si was partitioned in the matrix structure rather than the $M_7C_3$ carbides. $K^m$ for Cr was ranged from 0.56 to 0.68 while that for Si was from 1.12 to 1.28. $K^m$ for Cr had a lower value with increased carbon contents. The mass percent of Cr was higher in the $M_7C_3$ carbides with increased Cr contents.
