  • The sintering behavior and electrical property of $Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ ceramics were investigated with the iron oxide concentration ranging from 0 to 5 mol%. Both the sintered density and grain size were found to increase up to 2 mol% $Fe_2O_3$, and then to decrease with further additions. At a higher $Fe_2O_3$ content above 3 mol%, grain size decreased by a pinning effect induced by different shape grains. The electrical conductivity was also increased with increasing $Fe_2O_3$ content up to 2 mol%. Total conductivity of 2 mol% $Fe_2O_3-added$ specimen showed the maximum conductivity of $2{\times}10^{-2}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ at $500^{\circ}C$. The addition of $Fe_2O_3$ was found to promote the sintering properties and electrical conductivities of $Gd_2O_3-dope\;CeO_2$.

  • In this study, the layered structures of immiscible Fe and Cu metals were employed to investigate the interface evolution through solid-state mixing. The pure Fe and Cu powders were cold-consolidated by high-pressure torsion (HPT) to fabricate a layered Cu-Fe-Cu structure. The microstructural evolutions and flow of immiscible Fe and Cu metals were investigated following different iterations of HPT processing. The results indicate that the HPT-processed sample following four iterations showed a sharp chemical boundary between the Fe and Cu layers. In addition, the Cu powders exhibited perfect consolidation through HPT processing. However, the Fe layer contained many microcracks. After 20 iterations of HPT, the shear strain generated by HPT produced interface instability, which caused the initial layered structure to disappear.

  • This research examines the effect of adding aluminum on the structural, phasic, and magnetic properties of CoCrFe NiMnAlx high-entropy alloys. To this aim, the arc-melt process was used under an argon atmosphere for preparing cast samples. The phasic, structural, and magnetic properties of the samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and vibrational magnetometry (VSM) analyses. Based on the results, the addition of aluminum to the compound caused changes in the crystalline structure, from FCC solid solution in the CoCrFeNiMn sample to CoCrFeNiMnAl BBC solid solution. It was associated with changes in the magnetic property of CoCrFeNiMnAlx high-entropy alloys, from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic. The maximum saturation magnetization for the CoCrFeNiMnAl casting sample was estimated to be around 79 emu/g. Despite the phase stability of the FCC solid solution with temperature, the solid solution phase formed in the CrCrFeNiMnAl high-entropy compound was not stable, and changed into FCC solid solution with temperature elevation, causing a reduction in saturation magnetization to about 7 emu/g.

  • Magnetite powder for kerosene-based ferrofluid was synthesized by air oxidation of waste acid containing $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ ions in the pH=11 at $60^{\circ}C$. Stable kerosen-based ferrofluid was prepared by addition of polyoxyethylene nonylphenyl ether(POENPE) to the magnetite containing water. Dispersion mechanism of an addition POENPE to the magnetite was examined by means of the fraction of solid dispersed FT-IR spectrum. And magnetic properties of kerosen-based ferrofluid were examined by method of Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. In order to remove oil on the water surface by an addition of kerosen-based ferrofluid, the optimum conditions were examined.

  • Temperature programmed reduction experiments for Fe- and Co-oxides were performed and weight losses were carefully measured to calculate the extent of reduction. Addition of nickel and palladium affected the reduction by lowering the DTG peak temperature. Reduction experiments for the oxides on alumina were also studied and the effect of nickel and palladium addition was confirmed. And that was explained by means of increased adsorption of hydrogen and increased diffusion ability of the surface hydrogen.

  • Recently, various attempts to produce a heat sink made of Al 6xxx alloys have been carried out using die-casting. In order to apply die-casting, the Al alloys should be verified for die-soldering ability with die steel. It is generally well known that both Fe and Mn contents have effects on decreasing die soldering, especially with aluminum alloys containing substantial amounts of Si. However, die soldering has not been widely studied for the low Si aluminum (1.0~2.0wt%) alloys. Therefore, in this study, an investigation was performed to consider how the soldering phenomena were affected by Fe and Mn contents in low Si aluminum alloys. Each aluminum alloy was melted and held at $680^{\circ}C$. Then, STD61 substrate was dipped for 2 hr in the melt. The specimens, which were air cooled, were observed using a scanning electron microscope and were line analyzed by an electron probe micro analyzer. The SEM results of the dipping soldering test showed an Al-Fe inter-metallic layer in the microstructure. With increasing Fe content up to 0.35%, the Al-Fe inter-metallic layer became thicker. In Al-1.0%Si alloy, the additional content of Mn also increased the thickness of the inter-metallic layer compared to that in the alloy without Mn. In addition, EPMA analysis showed that Al-Fe inter-metallic compounds such as $Al_2Fe$, $Al_3Fe$, and $Al_5Fe_2$ formed in the die soldering layers.

  • An iron-fortified whey protein concentrate (Fe-WPC) was prepared by addition of ferric chloride to concentrated whey. A large part of the iron in the Fe-WPC existed as complexes with proteins such as ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin. The bioavailability of iron from Fe-WPC was evaluated using iron-deficient rats, in comparison with heme iron. Rats were separated into a control group and an iron-deficiency group. Rats in the control group were given the standard diet containing ferrous sulfate as the source of iron throughout the experimental feeding period. Rats in the iron-deficiency group were made anemic by feeding on an Fe-deficient diet without any added iron for 3 wk. After the iron-deficiency period, the iron-deficiency group was separated into an Fe-WPC group and a heme iron group fed Fe-WPC and hemin as the sole source of iron, respectively. The hemoglobin content, iron content in liver, hemoglobin regeneration efficiency (HRE) and apparent iron absorption rate were examined when iron-deficient rats were fed either Fe-WPC or hemin as the sole source of iron for 20 d. Hemoglobin content was significantly higher in the rats fed the Fe-WPC diet than in rats fed the hemin diet. HRE in rats fed the Fe-WPC diet was significantly higher than in rats fed the hemin diet. The apparent iron absorption rate in rats fed the Fe-WPC diet tended to be higher than in rats fed the hemin diet (p = 0.054). The solubility of iron in the small intestine of rats at 2.5 h after ingestion of the Fe-WPC diet was approximately twice that of rats fed the hemin diet. These results indicated that the iron bioavailability of Fe-WPC was higher than that of hemin, which seemed due, in part, to the different iron solubility in the intestine.

  • High performance permanent magnets have become the subject of considerable attention because of the potential applications in the traction motors of hybrid and electric vehicles and wind generators. Nd-Fe-B magnets have attracted considerable interest due to a large maximum energy product. However, Nd-Fe-B magnet cannot be used in high temperature (${\sim}200^{\circ}C$) applications due to the thermal degradation of coercivity. Therefore, the development of high coercivity Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet is a challenging issue. In case of high coercivity Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet, an increment in the intrinsic coercivity can be easily achieved by substituting Nd atoms with Dy or Tb atoms. However, these heavy rare-earth elements are known to cause a decrease in remanence due to the antiferromagnetic coupling between Dy and Fe atoms. In addition, Dy is relatively expensive and being limited in quantity. Hence, a new technology that can increase the coercivity of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet using only a small amount, or even, no amount of heavy rare-earth elements is being investigated. This article describes the research trend in reducing the heavy rare-earth elements in Nd-Fe-B magnets.
