Solid-State Ball-Mill Synthesis of Prussian Blue from Fe(II) and Cyanide Ions and the Influence of Reactants Ratio on the Products at Room Temperature

  • This paper presents the solid-state synthesis of insoluble Prussian blue (Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3·xH2O, PB) in a ball mill, utilizing the fundamental components of PB. Solid-state synthesis offers several advantages, such as being solvent-free, quantitative, and easily scalable for industrial production. Traditionally, the solid-state synthesis of PB has been limited to the reaction between iron(II/III) ions and hexacyanoferrate(II/III) complex ions, essentially an extension of the solution-based coprecipitation method to solid-state reaction. Taking a bottom-up approach, a reaction is designed where the reactants consist of the basic building blocks of PB: Fe2+ ions and CN- ions. The reaction, with a molar ratio of Fe2+ and CN- corresponding to 1:2.8, yields PB, while a ratio of 1:6.6 results in a mixture of potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) (K4Fe(CN)6), potassium chloride (KCl), and potassium cyanide (KCN). This synthetic approach holds promise for environmentally friendly methods to synthesize multimetallic PB with maximum entropy in nearly quantitative yield.

The Importance of Reaction Mechanisms in Interpreting the Arsenic Reactive Transport of FeS-coated Sand Column

  • FeS, as a natural reduced iron mineral, has been recognized to be a viable reactive material for As(III) sequestration in natural and engineered systems. In this study, FeS-coated sand packed columns were tested to evaluate the As(III) removal capacities under anaerobic conditions at pH 5, 7 and 9. The column obtained As(III) removal capacity was then compared with the capacity result obtained from batch reactors. In the comparison, two different approaches were used. The first approach was used the total As(III) removal capacity which method was proved to be useful for interpreting pH 5 system. The second approach was used to consider sorption non-linearity and proved to be useful for interpreting the pH 9. The results demonstrated that a mechanistic understanding of the different removal processes at different pH conditions is important to interpret the column experimental results. At pH 5, where the precipitation of arsenic sulfide plays the major role in the removal of arsenic, the column shows a greater removal efficiency than the batch system due to the continuous dissolution of sulfide and precipitation of arsenic sulfide. At pH 9, where adsorption mainly governs the arsenic removal, the sorption nonlinearity should be considered in the estimation of the column capacity. This study highlighted the importance of understanding reaction mechanism to predict column performance using batch-obtained experimental results.

KURT 지하심부 지하수 내 토착 금속환원미생물의 종 다양성 및 철/망간의 환원과 생광물화작용 (Characterization of Microbial Diversity of Metal-Reducing Bacteria Enriched from Groundwater and Reduction/Biomineralization of Iron and Manganese)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 KURT(KAERI underground research tunnel) 지하수 내에 금속이온을 환원시키는 미생물의 존재 여부를 확인하고 배양하여, 이들의 활동에 따른 철과 망간 환원의 관찰과 환원물의 광물학적 특성을 연구함으로써, 금속환원미생물에 의한 산화상태로 존재하는 철과 망간의 환원과 광물 상전이 가능성을 확인하는 것이다. KURT 지하수 내 금속을 환원하는 미생물은 전자공여체로 포도당, 초산, 젖산, 개미산, 피루브산을, 전자수용체로 Fe(III)-citrate를 사용하여 농화배양 하였으며, 16S rRNA 분석을 통해 종 다양성을 확인하였다. 농화배양된 금속환원미생물에 의한 철과 망간의 환원과 생광물화작용을 알아보기 위해 전자공여체로 포도당, 초산, 젖산, 개미산, 피루브산을, 전자수용체로 철수산화물인 아카가나이트(akaganeite, ${\beta}$-FeOOH)와 망간산화물(manganese oxide, ${\lambda}-MnO_2$)을 이용하여 금속환원 실험을 실시하였다. 미생물 활동에 의해 형성된 환원물의 광물학적 특성은 SEM, EDX, XRD 분석을 통해 확인되었다. 연구 결과 KURT 지하수에서 금속을 환원하는 혐기성 미생물로는 Fusibacter, Desulfuromonas, Actinobacteria, Pseudomonas sp. 등이 확인되었고, 이 미생물들은 체외에서 철과 망간을 환원하여 이들 광물의 상전이를 확인하였다. 철(Fe)은 $Fe^{3+}$을 포함한 아카가나이트(${\beta}$-FeOOH)에서 $Fe^{2+}/Fe^{3+}$를 포함한 자철석($Fe_3O_4$)으로 환원되었고, 망간(Mn)은 $Mn^{4+}$를 포함한 망간산화물(${\lambda}-MnO_2$)에서 $Mn^{2+}$을 포함한 능망간석($MnCO_3$)으로 환원되었다. 이러한 지하 140 m의 KURT 지하수에서 서식하는 미생물들에 의해 철과 망간이 환원됨은 다른 중금속과 핵종원소의 환원 가능한 환경이 조성되었을 뿐 만 아니라, 미생물에 의하여 환원된 철의 재산화에 의해서도 주변 핵종원소가 환원될 수 있음을 의미한다. 따라서 이러한 직 간접적인 산화-환원 반응에 의해 KURT 지하수 내에서는 금속환원미생물들이 유해금속물질을 침전시켜 이동성을 줄일 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 고준위 폐기물에서 유해물질의 유출시 핵물질의 확산을 막는데 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

유기용매중에서 Fe(Ⅲ), Mn(Ⅱ)과 p-aminoazobenzene 및 그 유도체와의 착물형성에 관한 연구 (The Complex Formation of p-Aminoazobenzene and its Derivatives with Fe(Ⅲ) and Mn(Ⅱ) in Organic Solvents)

  • Fe(Ⅲ) 및 Mn(Ⅱ)과 p-aminoazobenzene 및 그 유도체가 반응하여 형성된 착물들에 대하여 가시-자외선 및 적외선 분광광도법과 전기전도도방법을 이용하여 용매의 효과, donor의 염기도와 착물형성에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 그 결과 착물의 조성비, 안정도 상수 및 몰흡광계수를 구하여 van't Hoff식으로부터 ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$${\Delta}S^{\circ}$를 계산하였으며 반응성과 등속도관계를 고려하여 반응속도와 평형조절인자를 알게 되었다.

생활하수내 인 제거를 위한 화학적 침전의 최적화 (Optimization of chemical precipitation for phosphate removal from domestic wastewater)

  • Coagulation/precipitation process has been widely used for the removal of phosphate within domestic wastewater. Although Fe and Al are typical coagulants used for phosphate removal, these have some shortages such as color problem and low sedimentation velocity. In this study, both Fe and Al were used to overcome the shortages caused by using single one, and anionic polymer coagulant was additionally used to enhance sedimentation velocity of the precipitate formed. Batch experiments using a jar test were conducted with real wastewater, which was an effluent of the second sedimentation tank in domestic wastewater treatment plant. Response Surface Methodology was used to examine the responsibility of each parameter on phosphate removal as well as to optimize the dosage of the three coagulants. Economic analysis was also done on the basis of selling prices of the coagulants in the field. Phosphate removal efficiency of Fe(III) was 30% higher than those of Fe(II). Considering chemical price, optimum dosage for achieving residual phosphate concentration below 0.2 mg/L were determined to be 18.14 mg/L of Fe(III), 2.60 mg/L of Al, and 1.64 mg/L of polymer coagulant.

Study on Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) Thin Film Vapour Phase-Polymerized with Iron(III)Tosylate on AcOH-Catalyzed 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane Self-Assembled Monolayer

  • In this study, PEDOT thin films polymerized with Iron(III)tosylate ($Fe(PTS)_3$) and grown on acetic acid-catalyzed 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane self-assembled monolayer (APS-SAM) surfaces by VPP method have been investigated. PEDOT thin films were synthesized on APS self-assembled $SiO_2$ wafer surface at two different concentrations (20 wt% and 40 wt%) and growth time (3 and 30 minutes), and then they were compared. PEDOT vapour phase-polymerized with 40 wt% $Fe(PTS)_3$ oxidant completely formed a thin film on acetic acid-catalyzed APS-SAM surface while with 20 wt% $Fe(PTS)_3$ did not at all. It means that the oxidant can be uniformly coated on acetic acid-catalyzed APS-SAM surface at the 40 wt% concentration, which gives rise to the uniform growth of PEDOT thin film on it.

  • 여러가지 다양한 상수처리 실험조건에서 응집제로 Ferric Nitrate를 사용하여 수증의 카오린 점토입자를 응결하는 과정중의 응집동력학을 조사하기 위하여 본 영구는 수행되었다. 응집동력학을 측정하기 위한 방법으로서 AIA 시스템으로 부터 없어진 입자크기분포와 Rlowing suspension에서의 PDA에 의한 탁도증가 정도의 측정이 사용되었다. 결론으로서, 저온에서의 응집은 그 효율이 상당히 저하 되는것으로 발견 되었으며 저온에서의 응집을 향상시키기 위아여 수중의 pH보다는 pOH를 일정하게 유지하는 것이 부분적으로 응집효율향상에 도움이 되는 것으로 나타났다.

OenNen-Styrene DVB 합성수지에 의한 U(VI), Fe(II), Sm(III) 이온들의 흡착 (Adsorption of U(VI), Fe(II), Sm(III) Ions on OenNen-Styrene DVB Synthetic Resin)

  • The ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chlormethyl styrene - 1,4 - divinylbenzene(DVB) with 1%, 3%, and 5%-crosslinking and macro cyclic ligand of OenNen-$H_4$ by copolymerization method and the adsorption characteristics of uranium(VI), iron(II) and samarium(III) metallic ions have been investigated in various experimental conditions. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, and IR-spectrum. The effects of pH, time, dielectric constant of solvent and crosslink on adsorption of metallic ions were investigated. The uranium ion was showed fast adsorption on the resins above pH 3. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in ethanol was in increasing order uranium ${UO_2}^{2+}>Fe^{2+}>Sm^{3+}$ ion. The adsorption was in order of 1%, 3%, and 5% crosslink resin and adsorption of resin decreased in proportion to order of dielectric constant of solvent.

Synthesis, Characterization and in vitro Antibacterial Studies on Mixed Ligand Complexes of Iron(III) Based on 1,10-phenanthroline

  • As part of our attempt to discover novel active compounds against multi-drug resistant pathogens, we hereby report two new complexes of iron(III) with formulae: [Fe(L1)2(H2O)2]Cl3 and [Fe(L1)2(L2)(H2O)]Cl2 where L1 = 1,10-phenanthroline (C12H8N2) and L2 = guanide (C5H4N5O-). The synthesized complexes were characterized using spectroscopic analysis (ESI-MS, ICP-OES, FT-IR, and UV-Vis), cyclic voltammetry, CHN analysis, gravimetric chloride determination, melting point determination, and conductance measurement. Octahedral geometries are assigned to both complexes. In vitro antibacterial activity was tested on two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus epidermidis) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacteria using the disc diffusion method. The complexes demonstrated appreciable activity against these pathogens. Interestingly, the [Fe(L1)2(L2)(H2O)]Cl2 complex manifested a higher degree of inhibition against the drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria than the commercially available drug, namely erythromycin.

Measurement of Iron-dependence of pupA Promoter Activity by a pup-lux Bioreporter

  • The promoter region of the pupA gene of Pseudomonas putida WCS358 was fused with the structural genes for bioluminescence (luxCDABE) from Vibrio fischeri, and the resulting fusion plasmid harbored by the WCS358 host. The pup-lux fusion gene was then used for quantitative analysis of the iron-dependence of pupA promoter activity. Factors affecting bioluminescence produced by the pup-lux bioreporter were found to be cell activity, iron-chelator concentrations, Fe(III) concentrations, and nutrient components. Light production rates of the pup-lux bioreporter were inversely dependent upon iron molecules when $FeCl_3$ concentrations were between $10^{-2}$ and 1 ${\mu}M$ in nutrient-poor minimal media, and between 0.1 and 10 mM in nutrient-rich complex media.
