In the compound casting between the aluminum alloy and the cast iron, the iron component may be dissolved from the cast iron during the process and mixed into the aluminum melt, thereby forming various iron-containing intermetallic compounds and significantly deteriorating the tensile properties of the aluminum alloy. On the other hand, unlike Fe, which is added as an impurity, Cu is added to improve the mechanical properties of the aluminum alloy. In this study, the change in microstructure and tensile properties of aluminum alloys due to the addition of Fe and Cu was investigated. A large amount of iron-containing compounds such as coarse Al5FeSi phases were formed when the iron content was 1% or more, and the tensile properties were significantly reduced. In the case of the aluminum alloy to which Cu was added, an Al2Cu phase was additionally formed and the tensile strength was clearly improved.

Heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb) were determined in ninety-one surface sediments collected from Kwangyang Bay, south coast of Korea. The data show that the Fe, Cr, Ni, and Zn distribution in the bay can be described by metal vs. grain size relationship. However, the distribution pattern of Mn, Co, Cu and Pb were found to be changed because they are anthropogenically enriched to sediment. Correlation matrix and R-mode factor analyses revealed that two important factors controlling the distribution of metals in the bay are grain size and anthropogenic input.
These studies were carried out for the elucidation of liming effect on the growth of rice seedlings and the chemical characteristics of an acid sulphate paddy that shows not only extremely high acidity of soil but also poor growth of rice plants, consequently low yield. Thus the liming effect on the changes of acidity, oxidation-reduction potential, and the contents of iron, aluminium, sulphate, and phosphorus fractions in the soil was investigated under the waterlogging and drying condition. The reclaimable or inhibitory effect of phosphorus, iron and aluminium on the growth of rice seedlings was also investigated under liming. The results are summarized as follows: 1. After liming, the pH of the acid sulphate subsoil decreased again on drying. 2. The oxidation-reduction potential reached a minimum after 5 days of flooding and greatly decreased on liming but increased after drying. 3. The contents of ferrous iron soluble in water-and Morgan's solution reached a maximum after 15 days of flooding and only the content of water soluble ferrous iron was greatly decreased. 4. The content of aluminium soluble in water-and Morgan's solution decreased by flooding and liming, and showed a tendency to increase on drying. 5. In the limed acid sulphate soil, the content of water soluble calcium showed a highly significant negative correlation with the content of sulphate and liming decreased sulphate content in the soil. 6. The contents of total phosphorus was 496.3 ppm in the acid sulphate topsoil and 387.5 ppm in the subsoil. The content of each phosphorus fraction was in the order of Fe-P>Occ. Fe-P>Ca-P>Occ. Al-P>Al-P and Fe-P content in the soil was the highest fraction among them. 7. Lime application increased greatly Ca-P and Al-P, and Occ. Fe-P and Occ. Al-P only slightly, but decreased Fe-P differently in each soil. 8. Effect of phosphorus on the dry matter yield of rice seedlings was great. The optimum amount of phosphorus to produce maximum dry matter yield of rice seedlings appeared to be 6.8% of maximum absorption (absorption coefficient) without liming and 10.0% with liming. 9. In rice seedlings liming increased the content and uptake of calcium and silica but decreased those of iron and aluminium. Phosphorus application increased the content and uptake of phosphorus and decreased iron while the application of iron and aluminium increased their contents and uptake but decreased those of phosphorus. 10. Liming greatly alleviated such toxicity of iron and aluminium. 11. When phosphorus was applied, the dry matter yield of rice seedlings showed highly significant positive correlations with uptake of phosphorus, calcium and silica each. When iron and aluminium were applied, dry matter yields indicated significant positive correlations with the contents or uptake of calcium and silica each, but significant negative correlations with the content or uptake of iron and aluminium. 12. Under the application of phosphorus and lime, dry matter yields showed significant positive correlations with pH and Morgan's extractable calcium each of the soil samples after harvest. Under the application of lime, iron and aluminium, dry matter yields showed significant positive correlations with pH, calcium and silica each, but negative correlations with iron and aluminium contents each of the soil samples after harvest.
Although iron is an essential mineral, excess iron intake during pregnancy may increase oxidative stress in tissues. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of iron overload during pregnancy on iron status and oxidative stress in maternal rats. Ten week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were mated with male rats. Non-pregnant (control) and pregnant rats were fed diets containing normal Fe (35 mg/kg diet), high Fe (350 mg/kg diet), or excess Fe (1,050 mg/kg diet) during pregnancy. Rats were sacrificed on pregnancy day 19. No significant difference in weight gain, diet intake, or litter size was observed according to iron intake levels. Furthermore, serum iron, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were not different among the rats administered the three levels of Fe both in the control and pregnant groups. However, the iron levels were lower in pregnant rats than those in the control. The liver and spleen iron contents increased significantly in the excess Fe group. An increase in liver ferritin levels with increasing iron intake was observed. Protein carbonyl content, as a marker of oxidative stress, increased significantly in liver with increasing iron intake but not malondialdehyde. Glutathione peroxidase activity in the liver of pregnant rats fed excess iron decreased significantly. Bcl-2 protein expression in the liver declined remarkably with increasing maternal iron intake in pregnant rats. Taken together, iron overload during pregnancy had little effect on hematology. However, the deposits of iron in the liver and the decline in antioxidant enzyme activity implied increased oxidative stress in tissues of the excess Fe group. These results suggest that excess iron intake during pregnancy increases oxidative stress in maternal tissues and may also affect fetal tissues.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary protein level on Pb, Fe, and Cu accumulation of the tissue of the Pb-administered rats. The dietary protein levels were 6% 15%, and 40% and the lead-exposed rats were given 2,000 ppm-Pb drinking water solution. After 3 weeks, half of the each group rats were sacrificed and the rest were sacrificed 4 weeks later. Hematocrit, hemoglobin, R8C content in blood were lower in Pb-administered groups than in Pb-free group. Protein levels of serum and liver in 6% casein Pb-administered group were lower than in control group. Pb contents of serum, liver, and kidney were significantly increased in 6% casein-Pb administered group. Fe contents of serum and kidney were increased in 40% casein Pb-administered group, whereas in liver, 6% casein Pb-administered group was higher than others.
Recently it has been frequently reported arsenic contamination of geologic origin in groundwater. The iron-impregnated ranular activated carbon (Fe-GAC) was developed for effective removal of arsenic from groundwater n the study. Fe-GACs were prepared by impregnating iron compounds into a supporting medium (GAC) with 0.05 M iron nitrate solution. The materials were used in arsenic adsorption isotherm tests to know the effect of iron impregnation time, batch kinetic tests to understand the influence of pH, and column tests to evaluate for the preliminary operation of water treatment system. The results showed that the minimum twelve hours of impregnation time were required for making the Fe-GAC with sufficient iron content for arsenic removal, confirmed by a high arsenic adsorption capacity evaluated in the isotherm tests. Most of the impregnated iron compounds were iron hydroxynitrate $Fe_4(OH)_{11}NO_3{\cdot}2H_2O$ but a mall quantity of hematite was also identified in X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis. The batch isotherms of Fe-GAC for arsenic adsorption were well explained by Langmuir than Freundlich model and the iron contents of Fe-GAC have positive linear correlations on logarithmic plots with Freundlich distribution coefficients ($K_F$ and Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities ($Q_m$. The results of kinetic experiments suggested hat Fe-GAC had he excellent arsenic adsorption capacities regardless of all pH conditions except for pH 11 and could be used a promising adsorbents for groundwater arsenic removal considering the general groundwater pH range of 6-8. The pseudo-second order model, based on the assumption that the ate-limiting step might be chemisorption, provided the best correlation of the kinetic experimental data and explained the arsenic adsorption system f Fe-GAC. The column test was conducted to valuate the feasibility of Fe-GAC use and the operation parameters in arsenic groundwater treatment system. The parameters obtained from the column test were the retardation actor of 482.4 and the distribution coefficient of 581.1 L/mg which were similar values of 511.5-592.5 L/mg acquired from Freundlich batch isotherm model. The results of this study suggested that Fe-GAC could be used as promising adsorbent of arsenic removal in a small groundwater supply system with water treatment facility.
Study area (Jikjeon-ri) is located in south end of the Hadong anorthositic rocks. And along the south-western boundary, diorite intruded the Hadong anorthosite. Ilmenite ore bodies are extended in both anorthosite and diorite. And their occurrence in the diorite are not studied yet. While no particular textures are found in the ilmenite within the anorthosite, the ilmenite within the diorite shows characteristic exsolution texture, that is, ilmenite phases are separated into rutile and Fe-oxide and the ilmenite and Fe-oxide. MnO composition in ilmenite ratios are 2.14~3.74wt%, it has higher composition in diorite than that in anorthosite. The plagioclase composition display andesine ($An_{28.7-42.9}$) in the diorite and labradorite ($An_{57.1-72.8}$) in the anorthosite in composition. The exsolution of ilmenite has been developed during the cooling of partly melted ilmenite into rutile and Fe-oxides which is related to the intrusion of the diorite.
In general, the concentration of constituents can be more accurately measured in x-ray fluorescence analysis of Fe-Ni-Cr alloy by reducing and correcting the matrix effect with standard ingot samples. Because of the difficult the treatment at a high temperature in preparing the ingot samples of various concentrations, several standard specimens were prepared by mixing the powders of the metallic oxides in certain proportions and pressing them with a costant pressure. With the metallic oxide specimens thus obtained, different matrix coefficients were calculate from the intensities of the strength of the x-ray fluorescence and the concentration of the substances. It is found that effects of Fe and Cr on Ni are absorption rich and effects of Fe and Ni on Cr are enhancement rich, whereas Ni enhances Fe Fluorescence but Cr absorves Fe K${\alpha}$ line. And the x-ray fluorescence intensities were compared and analyzed between the metallic oxides and the ingot samples.
We observed the physical and chemical properties of a soil on pine mushroom picking areas where were located in the most upper and lower parts showing a comparative climatic characteristics in Korea. The slope gradients within the investigation areas which were divided into 100 quadrates of $1m^2$ ranged from $5.7{\sim}8.6{\beta}$ to $24{\sim}22.7{\beta}$ (left to right) and $4.5{\sim}6.8{\beta}$ to $13.5{\sim}17.8{\beta}$ (top to bottom) for Ponghwa and Gansung, respectively. The amount of clay and thickness of organic matter were significantly decreased with increasing slope gradient, resulting in decrease of the soil moisture content around a fairly ring-colony of Tricholoma matsutake which was observed under the relatively thicker organic matter layer beyond 3 cm depth. Soil pHswere weak acid and average EC was $0.44dS\;m^{-1}$ in both areas. The cations were in the order of Fe K > Na > Mg > Ca and Fe > K > Na > Ca > Mg for the upper(Gansung) and the lower (Ponghwa) part. And the amount of Fe was approximately $80dS\;m^{-1}$ or greater in the pine mushroom picking soil. From this, we could assume that the growth of the pine mushroom was closely related not only with iron but also soil moisture content.
Alkali rhyolites in the Cheonmunbong of the Mt. Baekdu stratovolcano show porphyritic texture in the glassy or aphanic groundmass. Major phenocryst is alkali-feldspar, pyroxene, and amphibole, and small amount of microphenocryst is olivine, quartz, opaque mineral (ilmenite). The content of $Fe^{2+}/(Fe^{2+}+Mg^{2+})$ and alkali elements in the mafic minerals is high. Alkali feldspar is classified as sanidine or anorthclase, olivine as fayalite, and pyroxene as ferro-hedenbergite of ferro-augite area. Amphibole belongs to alkali amphibole group, but FeO and $Fe_2O_3$ were not separated, so it is required future studies. Nb(-) anomaly suggesting that slab-derived materials might have played a primary role in the genesis of the rhyolite magma, is not observed. It is noted that they originated in the within plate environment which is not related to subduction zone of the convergent plate boundary. The Mt. Baekdu alkaline rocks are classified into the comendite series. The alkali rhyolites of the summit at Mt. Baekdu shows the disequilibrium mineral assemblages, suggesting that it evolved from thrachytic magma with experience of magma mixing as well as fractional crystallization.
