  • To investigate the concentrations and transport patterns of particulate metals in river suspended matters, eighteen samples were collected from a fixed station located in the upper part of the Keum River through one year, and analysed for major elements (AI, Fe, P, Mn) and trace elements (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, U). The contents of metals in suspended particulate matters (SPM) varied greatly with season and SPM load; maximum value in winter with low SPM level and minimum value in flood period and in spring Yangtze SPMs. The different trace metal level between rivers of Korea and China may be caused by the different geology of drainage basin(U) and by the different extent of anthropogenic input (Mn, Pb). Most of all particulate metals (>70%) except Mn, P and Cd were transported in the flood period with high water discharge and high suspended load. The magnitude of each transport phase (dissolved, non-detrital and detrital metals) was compared. The portions of labile metals (dissolved plus non-detrital metals) in the aquatic environment were in the range of 50%(Co) to 92%(Mn) of total metal transport and in the rank of Mn>Cd, U>Cu>Zn>Ni>Pb>Co.

  • This study was carried out to find out potential use of ochre as an agent to reduce phosphorus content in water. Ochre is a by-product from treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) which is composed mostly of $Fe_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3{\cdot}H_2O$, $FeO{\cdot}OH$ and $Fe(OH)_3$. Three ochre samples (ochre-H, ochre-D and ochre-S) were collected from three treatment facilities in Gangwon province. Physico-chemical characteristics of three ochre samples including pH, electrical conductivity, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, particle size distribution were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis were also carried out. In addition, experiments for phosphorus removal from water was performed. Calcium content of ochre-H was higher than that of ochre-D and ochre-S, whereas iron content of ochre-H was lower than that of ochre-D and ochre-S. All the phosphorus in water up to maximum 191,411 mg $kg^{-1}$ per unit mass of ochre was removed with ochre-H. Ochre has immense potential as an agent to reduce phosphorus content in water.

  • The increasing use of recycling products results in the need for assessing the risk to human health. In this study heavy metals's contents of playground flooring were compared with rubber powder which is row material. And it is reviewed characteristics of heavy metals's exposure from absorption of skin, checking amount of dermal uptake for each heavy metal. Despite its high content, Zn had a very low migration rate with 0.1 $mg/cm^2$. This indicates that Zn is not easily released by surface contact. However, the contents of Fe and Al in flooring were 12 times higher than that of Zn and Fe, and Al showed migration rate 5 times higher than that of Zn. This implies that Fe and Al were derived from pigment in flooring. The measurement of dermal exposure to heavy metals at 6 playgrounds found higher level of exposure in Ba than in other heavy metals. It is assumed that despite high content of Zn, Ba had a higher exposure rate because five times as much Ba as Zn was darmal absorptionactor ($AF_{darmal}$).

  • Gagok Mine, which is skarn deposits, includes sulfide minerals such as sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite. To explore these minerals, spectral induced polarization (SIP) is relatively effective compared to other geophysical exploration methods because there is a strong IP effect caused by electrode polarization. In the SIP, the chargeability related to sulfide mineral contents and the time constant related to the grain size of the minerals are obtained. For this reason, we aim to compare difference in the mineralized characteristics between two orebodies in the Gagok Mine by using the chargeability and the time constant. For this study, we sampled ores from the south of Wolgok orebody and the north of Sungok orebody. In order to recognize the mineralization characteristics, the metal content of the samples was measured by a potable XRF and the SIP data of the samples were acquired by using a laboratory SIP measurement system. As a result, the metals in the samples such as Pb, Zn, Cu, and Fe were detected by the portable XRF measurement. In particular, the Fe and Zn contents were far higher than the other metals. The Fe and the Zn were caused by the sphalerite and the pyrrhotite through microscopy. The Wolgok orebody had higher sulfide mineral contents than the Sungok orebody and the result corresponded with the chargeability result. However, we considered that the Sungok orebody had a larger sulfide mineral grain size than the Wolgok orebody because the time constant of the Sungok orebody was larger.

  • In order to evaluate the geochemical behaviors of elements with waste rocks in the abandoned Jangpoong Cu mine area, total concentration analysis and leaching experiments were performed. The content of elements within waste rocks compared with background values decreased in order of As>>Cu>Pb>Cd>Co. Leaching experiments were carried out at various extraction environments, considering the acid rain ($0.00001{\sim}0.001N\;HNO_3$) and the acid mine drainage ($0.001{\sim}0.1N$ HNO3). After 24 hours of reaction with different acidic solution, the leaching characteristics of waste rocks were classified into three types according to final pH of leaching solution. Type I refers to the case that the final pH of leaching solution was lower than that of the reaction solution due to the dissolution of acidic minerals from rocks, while type 2 and 3 refer to the case that the final pH maintained higher than that of the reaction solution. Theses types include in acid buffering minerals such as clay minerals and carbonate minerals. The leaching characteristics of the elements after the reaction could be categorized into As-Co-Fe, Cu-Mn-Cd-Zn, and Pb. As-Co-Fe started to get leached under 2.5 of pH regardless of changes in the final pH, and Cu-Mn-Cd-Zn showed different initial leaching pH according to the types of final pH changes. Based on the pH value where leaching started regardless of leaching concentration, the relative mobility of each element was in the order of Mn Zn>Cd>Cu>>Fe Co>As>Pb. Thus, more higher mobility elements(Zn, Mn and Cu) were leached by reacting with acid rain water. Acid mine drainage may result in distributions of elements having relatively less mobility(As, Fe, Co and Pb).

  • In order to investigate the vertical variations and speciations of trace elements, and their correlations in Hoidong reservoir, sediment cores (21-41 cm below surface) and interstitial water samples were collected from five sampling locations. The total average concentrations of trace metals in sediment core samples were $232{\pm}30.8mg/kg$ for Zn, $119{\pm}272mg/kg$ for Cu, $58.4{\pm}4.1mg/kg$ for Pb, $15.7{\pm}3.3mg/kg$ for Ni and $1.6{\pm}0.3mg/kg$ for Cd. The total concentrations of trace metals in core sediments generally decreased toward the center of the Hoidong reservoir. The total concentrations of Mn, Pb and Zn decreased with depth for all the sample locations, while Cu and Fe concentrations increased. The trace metal concentrations of interstitial water sample were in the order of Fe>Mn>Cu>Zn, but Cd, Ni and Pb were not detected. The concentrations of Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn in the interstitial water samples showed a tendency of increasing toward the bottom of the core, suggesting a possible upward diffusion. This migration of trace metals may lead to their transfer to the sediment-water interface. These trace elements would be subsequently fixed onto amorphous Fe and Mn-oxides and carbonates in the topmost layer of sediment. Based on the $K_D$ values, the relative mobilities of the studied metals were in the order of Mn>Cu>Zn>Fe. Geochemical partitioning confirmed that surface enrichment by trace metals mainly resulted from a progressive increase of the concentrations in the fractions II and III. Copper, Fe, Mn and Zn concentrations of interstitial water were closely correlated with their exchangeable fractions of sediments.

  • The main purposes of this study are to utilize mineralogical studies such as optical microscope, XRD and SEM/EDS analyses to characterize the oxidation of sulfide minerals and the mechanisms controlling the movement of dissolved metals from waste rocks at the abandoned Seobo mine. Mineralogical research of the waste rocks confirms the presence of anglesite, covellite, goethite, native sulfur and nsutite as secondary minerals, suggesting that these phases control the dissolved concentrations of As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn. The dissolved metals are precipitated, adsorbed and/or coprecipitated with(or within) Fe(Mn)-hydroxides and Mn(Fe)-hydroxides. The main phases of secondary mineral, Fe-hydroxide, can be classified as amorphous or poorly crystalline and more crystallized phases(e.g. goethite) by crystallinity. Amorphous or poorly crystalline Fe-hydroxide has relatively high As contents(9-24 wt.%). This poorly crystalline Fe-hydroxide changes toward more crystallized phase(e.g. goethite) which contains relatively low As(0.6-7.7 wt.%). These results are mainly due to the progressive release of As with the crystallization evolution of the As-trapping poorly crystalline Fe-hydroxides. It is also attributed to the differences of specific surface areas between the poorly crystalline Fe-hydroxides and well crystallized phases. The dissolved metals from waste rocks at Seobo mine area are naturally attenuated by a series of precipitation(as Fe, Mn, Cu, Pb), coprecipitation(Fe, Mn) and adsorption(As, Cu, Pb, An) reactions. The results of mineralogical researches permit to assess the environmental impacts of mine waste rocks in the areas, and can be used as a useful data to lay available mine restoration plan.

  • A study on the heating behavior and adhesion property of structural epoxy adhesive through induction heating have been conducted. An adhesive for induction heating was manufactured through mixing with nano and micro sized Fe3O4. From the results, it was observed that induction heating is less affected by adherend (GFRP) thickness than oven heating. The heating rate of Fe3O4 embedded epoxy adhesive using induction heating much higher than that of oven curing process and it is more appreciable when the contents of Fe3O4 increased. Furthermore, adhesion strength increased with increase of Fe3O4 particle contents.

  • Aluminum cast iron has excellent oxidation resistance and good resistance to sulfide and corrosion. Compared to Ti and Ni alloys, it is expected to be a substitute material for structural materials and stainless steels because it is relatively inexpensive to use Fe, which is a non-strategic element. This results in a weight reduction effect of about 30% as compared to the use of stainless steel. With regard to aluminum as an alloying material, it is an element that has been widely used for the alloying of cast iron in recent years. Practical use has been delayed owing to the resulting lack of ductility at room temperature and the sharp decrease in the strength above 600℃ of this alloy, however. The cause of the weak room temperature ductility is known to be environmental embrittlement by hydrogen, and the addition of various alloying elements has been attempted in order to mitigate these shortcomings. Although alloying elements such as vanadium, chromium, and manganese are mainly used to increase the hardness and wear resistance of gray cast iron, the price of finished products containing these elements and the problems associated with alloys with this material impose many limitations.

  • The pick up impurity was studied for preparing the NiCuZn ferrite powder by a ball milling method that usually uses in the industrial ceramic process. The raw materials of NiO, CuO, ZnO, and $Fe_2O_3$ powder were weighted according to various spinel composition and mixed for 18 hrs by a wet ball milling method after that the slurry was followed by spray dried and calcined at $700^{\circ}C$ 3 hrs. The calcined NCZF powder was finally ball milled during 65 hrs as same method. The stainless steel ball and jar are used as mixing and milling equipment and the solid concentration of the slurry was 25 vol%. The impurities, stainless steel pickup, were effected by the composition of raw materials especially iron oxide, nickel oxide in the mixing process and by the rate of calcine of NiCuZn ferrite in final milling process. The empirical equation of stainless steel pickup was driven in the wet ball milling system. Finally, the composition of NiCuZn ferrite could be controlled by the empirical equation.
