  • This paper show serial communication method in order to design how to interface between fault tolerant systems with redundancy. Problem has been in the method that fault tolerant system had switched of serial data with common switching device. This problem degrade reliability in itself and total system which is interfaced with that serial communication system. So Arbitration module of serial communication which is suggested in this paper can improve the reliability using voter algorithm which fault is detected passively.

  • This paper describes a fault tolerant control in distributed PLC(Programmable Logic Controller) system to ensure reliability of controllers which have some faults simultaneously. First, the behavior of PLC is modeled as discrete expressions using Galois field. Then, we design the control laws for additional spare controllers to generate parity code with two dimensions. Finally, the algorithm for estimating normal output instead of abnormal output from the controllers with fault is suggested. Comparing to the traditional duplication method, the suggested method can reduce the number of spare controllers significantly to ensure control reliability. This method will be applied to an automatic system in order to increase reliability. Also, it can improve cost performance of the system.

  • Nowadays, there are various networked systems with many computers. In most networked systems, a crucial objective is to keep transmitting and/or receiving data continuously even though failures exist. How can one make a computer continue transmitting and/or receiving data even when there are some errors on a link? Fault-Tolerant Ethernet (FTE) can be a solution to this question. In this paper, we propose a Localized Software-based Fault-Tolerant Ethernet (LSFTE). Our new approach fulfills the general FTE requirements. It takes advantage of redundant cable lines to maintain communication in a faulty environment. A software layer, which uses a simple and effective algorithm, is added above the LAN card driver software to detect and overcome faults. For our approach, there is no need to change the existing hardware or the end-use interfaces. Furthermore, the fault-detection time is reduced significantly compared to the conventional software-based approach.

  • This paper proposes a fault-tolerant multicasting algorithm employing the region encoding scheme in multistage interconnection networks (MIN's) containing multiple faulty switching elements. After classifying all switching elements into two subsets with equal sizes in MIN, the proposed algorithm can tolerate the faulty pattern where every fault is contained in the same subset. In order to send a multicast message to its destinations detouring faults, the proposed algorithm uses the recursive scheme that recirculates it through MIN, We prove that this algorithm can route any multicast message in only two passes through the faulty MIN.

  • We consider the problem of placing resources in a distributed computing system so that certain performance requirements may be met while minimizing the number of required resource copies, irrespective of node or link failures. To meet the requirements for high performance and high availability, minimum number of resource copies should be placed in such a way that each node has at least two copies on the node or its neighbor nodes. This is called the fault-tolerant resource placement problem in this paper. The structure of a parallel or a distributed computing system is represented by a graph. The fault-tolerant placement problem is first transformed into the problem of finding the smallest fault-tolerant dominating set in a graph. The dominating set problem is known to be NP-complete. In this paper, searching for the smallest fault-tolerant dominating set is formulated as a state-space search problem, which is then solved optimally with the well-known A* algorithm. To speed up the search, we derive heuristic information by analyzing the properties of fault-tolerant dominating sets. Some experimental results on various regular and random graphs show that the search time can be reduced dramatically using the heuristic information.

  • In this paper, a novel foot force distribution algorithm for hexapod walking robots is presented. The considered hexapod robot has fault-tolerant tripod gaits with a failed leg in locked-joint failure. The principle of the proposed algorithm is to minimize the slippage of the leg that determines the stability margin of the fault-tolerant gaits. The fault-tolerant tripod gait has a drawback that it has less stability margin than normal gaits. Considering this drawback, we use the feature that there are always three supporting legs, and by incorporating the theory of Zero-Interaction Force, we calculate the foot forces analytically without resort to any optimization technique. In a case study, the proposed algorithm is compared with a conventional foot force distribution method and its applicability is demonstrated.

  • In this paper, a fault diagnosis algorithm for brushless DC (BLDC) motor drives is proposed to maintain control performance under switch open-damage. The proposed fault diagnosis algorithm consists of a simple algorithm using measured phase current information and it detects open-circuit faults based on the operating characteristic of BLDC motors. The proposed algorithm quickly recovers control performance due to its short detection time and its reconfiguration of the system topology. It can be embedded into existing BLDC drive software as a subroutine without additional sensors. The feasibility of the proposed fault diagnosis algorithm is proven by simulation and experimental results.

  • Motor drive has used in many industrial application. In this situation the motor performance reliability has been more and more important. Sensor fault is critical defect to motor performance especially current sensor. Therefore this paper is dealing with SPMSM current sensorless algorithm in Luenberger estimation method with only a phase current information for current sensor fault situation. And the algorithm is verified with experimental results.

  • This paper describes a fault detection and fault handling algorithm to be used in a longitudinal vehicle cruise control systems. The fault diagnosis system consists of two structures to generate proper residuals and to find that which component has a fault. A systematic design of the fault diagnosis system using model-based techniques is presented. A linear observer is used to create a set of signals sensitive to faults in a radar sensor. The fault handling system consists of two structures to compensate for faults and degraded system performance. Simulation results show that the algorithm is effective for a fault diagnosis and handling in a longitudinal vehicle cruise control system.
