In order to map the acoustic basement and to locate fracture zones in the Galgok fault, seismic refraction data were acquired near the Chonbuk ranch in Gyeongju. Along three profiles of 72m(Line 1), 72m(Line 2), and 36m(Line 3) long, seismic signals were generated by a 5kg hammer. The refraction data were collected by employing twelve 8 Hz geophones at an interval of 3m and recording time of 192ms at a sampling rate of 0.2ms. The data are interpreted using GRM method. The top layer (Layer 1) is characterized as the velocity of approximately250 m/s and thickness of approximately 2.1m. This layer is regarded as a soil layer. Underneath Layer 1 lies unconsolidated layer (Layer 2) whose refraction velocity is determined to be $1,030{\sim}1,400m/s$. Layer 2 is approximately 4.6m thick and is regarded as a Quaternary gravel layer. The third layer (Layer 3) has the mean refraction velocity of $2,100{\sim}2,200m/s$ and is interpreted to be the acoustic basement. In some parts of Lines 1 and 3, the difference in depth to the top of Layer 2 is greater than 20 cm indicating the possibility of existence of Quaternary faults. Along Line 3 and the eastern part of Line 1, refracted energy from the acoustic basement was not recorded. This may highly indicate that a relatively large scale fault exists under the western part of Line 1.

The errors between track segments or at the cross-over points of shipborne gravity were successfully reduced by applying a cross-over error adjustment technique using satellite gravity. The integration of shipborne and satellite altimeter-implied free-air gravity anomalies after the cross-over error adjustment resulted in a high resolution gravity map which contains both short and long wavelength components. The successful adjustment of the cross-over errors in the shipborne gravity using the satellite gravity suggests that the shipborne gravity can be combined with the satellite anomalies characterized by a stable and long wavelength component. The resulting free-air anomaly map is evenly harmonized with both short and long wavelength anomalies. Thus the corrected anomaly map can be better used for the geological interpretation. Free-air anomalies with more than 140 mGal in total variations generally correspond to the seafloor topographic changes in their regional patterns. A series of gravity highs are aligned from the Korea Plateau to the Oki Island, which are interpreted to be caused by seamounts or volcanic topographies. The gravity minima along the western and southern shelf edge are associated not only with the local basement morphology and thick sediment fill at the continental margin, but also possibly with the crustal edge effect known for passive continental margins. Series of NE-trending linear anomalies are possibly caused by a swarm of volcanic intrusions followed the initial opening of the Ulleung Basin. The linear high anomalies in the Ulleung Plateau are terminated by the straightly NNW-trending anomalies with a sharp gradient in its western boundary which indicates a fault-line scarp. The opposite side adjoined with the fault-line scarp shows no correlation with the fault-line scarp in geometry indicating that the block might be horizontally slided from the north. A gravity high in contrast to the deepening in seafloor toward the northeastern central Ulleung Basin is probably responsible for the thin crust and shallow seated mantle. Here we firstly present that a timing of reactivated event of Yangsan fault, the major fault in the southeastern Korean Peninsula, by using combined approaches of the optimized illite-polytype quantification, the K-Ar age-dating, and the recently developed illite-age-analysis (IAA) approach for the fault clays from Sangcheon-ri area of Yangsan main fault line. Two chronological record of brittle fault-activation event at about 41.5~43.5 and 50.7 Ma were determined from 3 fault gouges suggesting a crucial reactivation time-scheme. Furthermore, the regional processes that drive tectonics to form and reactivate the Yangsan fault may be explained from the chronological analysis for additional sites along the Yangsan fault.
The BEF on the radial distribution line refers to a class of ground faults in which the load-side power line only is grounded, with the distribution line broken into two parts, the source-side and the load-side. Because its mechanism is remarkably different from that of other earth faults, the fault current is very low, and then difficult to detect the BEF. Thus, it is necessary to analyze its properties and to find an appropriate method that can economically protect the BEF of nonautomation area in the substation. As a result of analyzing the BEF data obtained by the RTDS, EMTP simulation, and the field test data of ETSA, we believe that it is the dominant factor in distinguishing the BEF from normal conditions by a criterion value that is appropriately handled from the zero-sequence current. Thus, with this criterion value, a BEF detecting algorithm is constructed which measures the variations of the zero-sequence current and processes then properly so as to make the fault decision. To prove the accuracy of this algorithm, it is compared with the field test data of ETSA under various conditions. The results show that the proposed algorithm is accurate.
The addition of switches to a distribution feeder does, in general, increase reliability by decreasing the duration of the outage of many to the customers on the feeder. To cover its service area so that feeder-level delivery reaches sufficiently close to all customers, feeders typically split their routes many times, in what is often called a lateral feeder. It is interesting to note, however, that the effectiveness of a switch is very much dependent on the types of lateral feeder. The types of lateral are classified into two types. The first is loop lateral feeder that can connect its load to an adjacent feeder through a tie line in case that a fault occurs in its feeder and it is laid out so that every feeder has complete fault backup through re-switching of its loads to other sources like a main feeder. The second is the radial lateral feeder cannot connect its load to an adjacent line, no provision is made for contingency backup of feeders. There are no other circuits in the radial lateral feeder form which to restore power. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of a switch installation between on the radial and loop lateral feeders to increase reliability by decreasing the duration of the outage. These results can help power utility to design the switch layouts on the radial and loop lateral feeder system.

The present assignment in installing the number of switches for distribution line was made on the basis of a normal feeder capacity 7,000kVA in KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation), Korea. But the normal capacity is revised to 10000kVA in 1998. Even increasing limit of the operating capacity of the distribution lines enables us to give some benefit for the operation flexibility and investment cost of the distribution system. It is disadvantageous in the viewpoint of supply reliability. In distribution systems, switches are equipped to improve the reliability of distribution systems by minimizing the outage section due to fault and maintenance. Utility generally improves the reliability by minimizing the length of outage section, which is caused by fault and maintenance, through switch equipment on distribution system. In order to cope with the changes such as operation capacity, it is necessary to study whether the present criteria is reasonable or not, also to confirm whether the present criteria of installing switches in line is improved or not. In this study, we proposes the number of switch per feeder on the basis of present operation capacity in distribution system.
In many countries, including Korea, in order to transmit the more electric power, the higher transmission line voltage is inevitable. So, a rapid reclosing scheme is important for UHV transmission lines to ensure requirements for high reliability of main lines. But, because of the high voltage and long span of UHV lines, the secondary arc current flows across the fault point even after the interruption of the fault current. i.e. A critical aspect of reclosing operation is the extinction of the secondary arc since it must extinguish before successful reclosure can occur. In Korea transmission lines, it is scheduled to energize 765kV single transmission line(79km) between Sin-Ansung S/S and Sin-Gapyeong S/S at June 2006. Therefore this paper analyzes characteristics of the secondary arc extinction on 765kV single transmission line using EMTP. Simulation results shows that the average value of the secondary arc is $30A_{rms}$ and the auto-extinction time of it is longer at closer point to Sin-Gapyeong S/S.

Aero-engine, as one kind of rotating machinery with complex structure and high rotating speed, has complicated vibration faults. Therefore, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis system is very important for airplane security. In this paper, a vibration data acquisition and intelligent fault diagnosis system is introduced. First, the vibration data acquisition part is described in detail. This part consists of hardware acquisition modules and software analysis modules which can realize real-time data acquisition and analysis, off-line data analysis, trend analysis, fault simulation and graphical result display. The acquisition vibration data are prepared for the following intelligent fault diagnosis. Secondly, two advanced artificial intelligent(AI) methods, mapping-based and rule-based, are discussed. One is artificial neural network(ANN) which is an ideal tool for aero-engine fault diagnosis and has strong ability to learn complex nonlinear functions. The other is data mining, another AI method, has advantages of discovering knowledge from massive data and automatically extracting diagnostic rules. Thirdly, lots of historical data are used for training the ANN and extracting rules by data mining. Then, real-time data are input into the trained ANN for mapping-based fault diagnosis. At the same time, extracted rules are revised by expert experience and used for rule-based fault diagnosis. From the results of the experiments, the conclusion is obvious that both the two AI methods are effective on aero-engine vibration fault diagnosis, while each of them has its individual quality. The whole system can be developed in local vibration monitoring and real-time fault diagnosis for aero-engine.
This paper describes the performance of a full-authority neural network-based fault tolerant system within a flight control system. This fault tolerant flight control system integrates sensor and actuator failure detection, identification, and accommodation (SFDIA and AFDIA), The first task is achieved by incorporating a main neural network (MNN) and a set of n decentralized neural networks (DNNs) to create a system for achieving fault tolerant capabilities for a system with n sensors assumed to be without physical redundancy The second scheme implements the same main neural network integrated with three neural network controllers (NNCs). The function of NNCs is to regain equilibrium and to compensate for the pitching, rolling. and yawing moments induced by the failure. Particular emphasis is placed in this study toward achieving an efficient integration between SFDIA and AFDIA without degradation of performance in terms of false alarm rates and incorrect failure identification. The results of the simulation with different actuator and sensor failures are presented and discussed.
