  • We improved quench properties of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) based on YBCO thin films by their serial and parallel combinations. The SFCL consisted of 6 switching elements fabricated of 4 inch-diameter YBCO thin films. The quench currents of the switching elements were distributed between 33.9 A and 35.6 A. Simple serial connection resulted in imbalanced power dissipation between switching elements even at the quench current difference of 0.6 A. On the other hand, $2{\times}2$ and $3{\times}2$ stack combinations produced simultaneous quenches. The $3{\times}2$ stack combination showed better simultaneous quench behavior than the $2{\times}2$ stacks. This is suggested to be because the currents between switching elements in parallel connection of the $3{\times}2$ stacks were more effectively redistributed than the $2{\times}2$ stacks.

  • We fabricated a resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) of 3-phase $6.6 kV_{rms}$ / rating, based on YBCO thin films grown on sapphire substrates with a diameter off inch. Each element of the SFCL was designed to have the rated voltage of $600 V_{rms}$ $/35A_{rms}$. The elements produced a single phase with 8${\times}$6 components connected in series and parallel. In addition, a NiCr shunt resistor of 23 $\Omega$ was connected in parallel to each of them for simultaneous quenches between the elements. Prior to investigating the performance of the 3 phase SFCL, we examined the quench characteristics for 8 elements connected in series. For all elements, simultaneous quenches and equal voltage distribution within 10% deviation from the average were obtained. Based on these results, performance of the SFCL for single line-to-ground faults was investigated. The SFCL successfully limited the fault current of $10 kA_{ rms}$ below 816 $A_{peak}$ within 0.12 msec right after the fault occurred. During the quench process, average temperature of all components did not exceed 250 K, and the SFCL was totally safe during the whole operation.

  • We investigated the quench characteristics of meander line type resistive superconducting fault current limiters based on YBCO thin films grown on 2" diameter LaAlO$_3$ substrates. A gold layer was deposited onto the 0.4 ${\mu}$ m thick YBCO film to disperse the heat generated at hot spots, prior to patterning into 1 mm wide meander lines by photolithography. The limiters were tested with simulated fault currents of various amplitudes. The quench started at 10 A and was completed within 1 msec at the fault current of 65 A$_{peak}$. The dynamic quench characteristics were explained based on the heat conduction within the film and the heat transfer between the film and the surrounding liquid nitrogen. The heat transfer coefficient per unit area was estimated to be 3.0 W/cm$^2$K.

  • System reliability has been a major concern since the beginning age of the electronic digital computers. One of the modest ways of increasing reliability is to design fault-tolerant system. This paper propose a construction mechanism of fault-tolerant system for the general graph topology. This system has several spare nodes. Up to date, fault-tolerant system design is applied only to loop and tree networks. But they are very limited cases. New algorithm of this paper tried to have a capability which can be applied to any kinds of topologies without such a many restriction. the algorithm consist of several steps : minimal diameter spaning tree extraction step, optimal node decision step, original connectivity restoration step and finally redundancy graph construction step.

  • The almost pole transformers are constructed with tank, cover, clamp etc., that contains the insulation oil, core, coil, terminals, bus and the other accessories. If some fault current will be flown by some trouble or accident, interior pressure of the transformer shall be very quickly rise, and mechanical components or insulation oil from the transformer enclosure shall be propelled or dropped from the tank. For the prevention of the above accident, recently the pole transformers should be done 'the Design Tests for Fault Current Capability' according to ANSI C57.12.20(1997) There are two tests method in this standard, Test Number I with a high current arcing fault, without internal fusible elements, shall be conducted on rack enclosure with its minimum designed air space. Test Number II with an internal fusible element, shall be conducted on each enclosure diameter utilizing the internal fusible elements. KEPCO recently request to be done the 'Design Tests for Fault Current Capability' for pole transformers according to KEPCO's standard ES141-$533{\sim}545$, PS141-$482{\sim}518$ and RS141-$611{\sim}628$ that is same with Test Number I of ANSI C57.12.20.

  • A honeycomb network is considered as a multiprocessor interconnection network. The network cost defined as the product of degree and diameter is better for honeycomb networks than for other types of meshes. Parallel paths offer us bypasses when the networks have faulty nodes or edges. In this paper, we present a method to construct a parallel path in honeycomb network, and show that the fault diameter for the honeycomb network is d+8, where d is diameter of the honeycomb network.

  • We have performed the current and voltage loading tests of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) based on $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$(YBCO) films with the diameter of 2 inch. The SFCL consists of meander-type YBCO stripes covered with 200 nm Au layer grown in situ for current shunt and heat dispersion at hot spots. The minimum quench current of an SFCL unit was about 25 Apeak. Seven SFCL units were connected in parallel fur the current load ing tests at power source of 100 $V_{rms}$ $/2,000A_{rms}$. This SFCL units had maximum limiting current of 170 Apeak during the fault instant and then successfully controlled the fault current below 100 Apeak within 1~2 msec after short circuit. Increased short current also reduced the quench completion time with little change of current limiting characterization. We connected six SFCL units in series fur the voltage loading tests at power source of $1,200 V_{rms}$/170 $A_{rms}$ at this time. The shunt resistors were inserted into each SFCL unit to eliminate power imbalance originated from serial connection of SFCL units. Each SFCL unit was quenched simultaneously during the fault condition. The current increased up to 40 $A_{peak}$ and decreased to 14 $A_{peak}$ after 3 cycles. Quench was completed within 1 msec after the fault. We confirmed operating characteristics of 140 kVA($120 A_{rms}$ $\times$ 1,200 $V_{rms}$) SFCL and presented the manufacturing possibility of 3.3 kV SFCL using 4 inch YBCO films.BCO films.lms.

  • Embedding is a mapping an interconnection network G to another interconnection network H. If a network G can be embedded to another network H, algorithms developed on G can be simulated on H. In this paper, we first propose a method to embed between Hierarchical Cubic Network HCN(n, n) and Hierarchical Folded-hypercube Network HFN(n, n). HCN(n, n) and HFN(n, n) are graph topologies having desirable properties of hypercube while improving the network cost, defined as degree${\times}$diameter, of Hypercube. We prove that HCN(n, n) can be embedded into HFN(n, n) with dilation 3 and congestion 2, and the average dilation is less than 2. HFN(n, n) can be embedded into HCN(n, n) with dilation 0 (n), but the average dilation is less than 2. Finally, we analyze the fault tolerance of HCN(n, n) and prove that HCN(n, n) is maximally fault tolerant.

  • For the development of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs), fault current limiting elements were fabricated out of Bi-2212 bulk tubes and tested. The SFCL elements consisted of tube shaped Bi-2212 bulks and metal shunts for the stabilizers. Firstly, the Bi-2212 bulk tubes were processed based on a design of monofilar coils in order to acquire large resistance and high voltage rating. 300 mm-long Bi-2212 tubes were designed to have the current path of 410 cm in length with 24 turns and 41 mm in diameter. The processed monofilar coil, as designed, had 300 A $I_c$ at 77 K. The fabricated superconducting monofilar coils were affixed to Cu-Ni alloy as that of stabilizers. The Cu-Ni alloys were processed to have the same shape of the superconducting monofilar coils. The Cu-Ni coil had resistivity of 32 ${\mu}{\Omega}$-cm at 77 K and 37 ${\mu}{\Omega}$-cm at 300 K. The metal shunts were attached to the outside of the Bi-2212 monofilar coil by a soldering technique. After the terminals made of copper were attached to both ends of the superconductor-metal shunt composite, the gap between the turns and the surface of the elements was filled with an epoxy and a dense mesh made of FRP in order to enhance the mechanical strength. The completed SFCL elements went through fault tests, and we confirmed that the voltage rating of 143 $V_{rms}$ (E =0.35 $V_{rms}$/cm) could be accomplished.

  • We investigated resistive superconducting fault current limites (SFCLs) fabricated using YBCO thin films on 2-inch diameter sapphire substrates. Nearly identical SFCL units were prepared and tested. The units were connected in series and parallel to increase the current and voltage ratings. A serial connection of the units showed significantly unbalanced power dissipation between the units. This imbalance was removed by introducing a shunt resistor to the firstly quenched unit. Parallel connection of the units increased the current rating. An SFCL module of 4 units in parallel, each of which has minimum quench current rating. An SFCL module of 4 units in parallel, each of which has minimum quench current 25 A$\_$peak/, was produced and successfully tested at a 220 V$\_$rms/circuit. From the resistance increase, we estimated that the film temperature increased to 200 K in 5 msec, and 300 K in 120 msec. Successive quenches revealed that this system is stable without degradation in the current limiting capability under such thermal shocks as quenches at 220 V$\_$rms/.
