A Study on Software Based Fault-Tolerance Techniques for Flight Control Computer (비행조종컴퓨터 소프트웨어 기반 고장허용 설계 기법 연구)

  • Software based fault tolerance techniques are designed to allow a system to tolerate software faults in the system. Fault tolerance techniques are divided into two groups : software based fault tolerance techniques and hardware based fault tolerance techniques. We need a proper design method according to characteristics of the system. In this paper, the concepts of software based fault tolerance techniques for Dual Flight Control Computer are described. For software based fault tolerance design, we classified software failure, designed a way for failure detection and the way of recovery. Eventually the effectiveness of software based fault tolerance techniques was verified through the Software Test Environment(STE).

Fault Tolerant Control of Sensor Fault of EPB System (EPB 시스템의 센서 고장 허용 제어 기법)

  • In this paper, a fault tolerant control against sensor faults of electric parking brake (EPB) is proposed. Fault tolerant control method of EPB system is strongly demanded since sensor faults can endanger a driver's safety. In this paper, a clamp force estimation method is presented using motor's armature current and angular velocity. Clamp force estimation method is applied for fault detection method with parity equations. The goal of the detection method is to detect and identify faults in encoder, current sensor, force sensor, and parking cable. And a switching logic for fault tolerant control against the three sensor faults is suggested. Experimental results show that the proposed force estimation method satisfies the specifications of EPB system. The effectiveness of the fault detection method is validated with experimental results. Although a single sensor fault happens, EPB system with the proposed fault detection method does not develop into a failure on subsystem or system level.

Fault Detection of Aircraft Turbofan Engine System Using a Fault Detection Filter (고장 검출 필터를 사용한 항공기 터보팬 엔진 시스템의 고장 검출)

  • A typical way to reduce the number of hardware redundancy configurations is to implement them as analytical techniques for detecting, identifying and accepting failures with micro-controller. In this paper, one of the analytical techniques, the fault detection filter, is applied to aircraft turbofan engine system. The fault detection filter is a special type of observer that has the advantage of being able to determine the location of failures by maintaining a constant direction in the output space in the event of a particular failure. We present a single input/output dynamic system modeling of air turbine system in turbofan engine, a fault detection filter design, and simulation results applying it. Simulation results show that fault detection can be effectively applied as a sensitivity effect to the directionality of the detection filter.

  • A rapid growth of internet and sudden increase of multimedia data demands for high-speed transfer media and if optimizec usage from the interface system. To achieve this level of network bandwidth, multiple NICs for support of high-speed network bandwidth have been developed and studied. Furthermore, the use of multiple NICs can provide high-speed LAN environment without large network environment modification, supports backward compatibility of current system and reduce overhead. However. if system failure is caused by SPOF(Single Point of Failure) fault of large-capacity multiple NICs, incredible loss will be met because it services large capacity of multimedia data, Therefore, to prevent loss coming from faults, we describe 'Fault tolerance of multiple NICs', which use the fault prevention mechanism. Considering inefficiency of availability and serviceability that is occurred with existing TMR, Primary-Standby approach and Watchdog time mechanism, we propose and design the efficient fault tolerance mechanism, which minimize down time as changing of detection period dynamically. Consequently, the fault tolerance mechanism proposed for reducing overhead time when the fault is occurred, should minimize system downtime overall.

  • Fault diagnosis problem is currently a subject of extensive research in the control field. Although there are several works on the fault detection and isolation observers and the residual generators, those are con- cerned with only the detection of actuator failures or sensor failures. So, the perfect detection and isolation for the actuator and sensor failures is strongly required in the field of the practical applications. In this paper, a strategy of fault diagnosis using multiple proportional integral (PI) observers including the magnitude of actuator failures is provided. It is shown that actuator failures are detected and isolated perfectly by monitoring the integrated error between actual output and estimated output by a PI observer. Also in presence of complex actuator and sensor failures, these failures are detected and isolated by multiple PI observers.

  • In this paper, a robust fault-tolerant control scheme for robot manipulators overcoming actuator failures is presented. The joint(or actuator) fault considered in this paper is the free-swinging joint failure and causes the loss of torque on a joint. The presented fault-tolerant control framework includes a normal control with normal(non-failed) operation, a fault detection and a fault-tolerant control to achieve task completion. For both no uncertainty case and uncertainty case, a stable normal con-troller and an on-line fault detection scheme are presented. After the detection and identification of joint failures, the robot manipulator becomes the underactuated robot system with failed actuators. A robust adaptive control scheme of robot manipulators with the detected failed-actuators using the brakes equipped at the failed(passive) joints is proposed in the presence of parametric uncertainty and external disturbances. To illustrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed fault-tolerant control scheme, simulation results for a three-link planar robot arm with a failed joint are presented.

  • Software reliability in the software development process is an important issue. Infinite failure NHPP software reliability models presented in the literature exhibit either constant, monotonic increasing or monotonic decreasing failure occurrence rates per fault. In this paper, reliability software cost model considering logarithmic and exponential fault detection rate based on observations from the process of software product testing was studied. Adding new fault probability using the Goel-Okumoto model that is widely used in the field of reliability problems presented. When correcting or modifying the software, finite failure non-homogeneous Poisson process model. For analysis of software reliability model considering the time-dependent fault detection rate, the parameters estimation using maximum likelihood estimation of inter-failure time data was made. The logarithmic and exponential fault detection model is also efficient in terms of reliability because it (the coefficient of determination is 80% or more) in the field of the conventional model can be used as an alternative could be confirmed. From this paper, the software developers have to consider life distribution by prior knowledge of the software to identify failure modes which can be able to help.

  • The performance of the failure detection algorithm may be greatly influenced by the model uncertainty. It is very important to design a robust failure detection system to the model uncertainty. In this paper, a design procedure to generate failure detection algorithm is proposed. The design procedure suggested is based on the concept of the‘threshold selector[1]’. The H$\infty$ control algorithm is used to derive a threshold selector which is robust to the model uncertainty, The threshold selector derived can be used to develop a failure detection system together with the weighted cumulative sum algorithm[3]. Computer simulation study showed that the failure detection system designed for an ISA(Integrated Servo Actuator) system by using the proposed method is robust to the model uncertainty.

  • Ball bearings are one of main components that support the rotational shaft in high speed rotary machinery. So, it is very important to detect the incipient faults and fault growth of bearing since the damage and failure of bearing can cause a critical failures or accidents of machinery system. In the past, many researchers mainly performed to detect the bearing fault using traditional method such as wavelet, statistics, envelope etc in vibration signals. But study on the detection technique for bearing fault growth has a little been performed. In this paper, we verified the possibility for monitoring of fault growth and detection of fault size in bearing outer-race by using the envelope powerspectrum and probabilistic density function from measured vibration signals.

  • The fault detection technique of the grid-connected photovoltaic system using wavelet transform has been suggested in this paper. The additional hardware and sensors are required to detect the inverter failure in the conventional method, and it has the disadvantage of high cost and re-design problem if the inverter specification has been changed. The suggested method used the inverter voltage and current waveform to detect the failure and the location by the wavelet coefficients variations. The prompt and accurate diagnostic function is possible using the normalized standard deviation method. The merit of the proposed method is the simple calculation and precise diagnostic capabilities of the fault detection. The computer simulation is performed and the experimental result verifies the validity of the proposed method.
