  • When a wheel profile of a train-tram is designed, both train and tram tracks should be considered. This study designed a wheel profile that enables high-speed driving(200km/h) on the train track and low speed driving on the tram track with multiple sharp curves. The study used the approximation optimization method to reduce cost and time, used the sequential quadratic programming method as the optimized algorithm, and the central composite design and response surface method as an approximate model. The optimized wheel shape based on this approximation optimization method reduced wear of the initial wheel showed a better performance in terms of derailment and lateral force.

  • Aircraft structures and engineering structures are always subject to variable amplitude loads. Variable amplitude loads include some kind of loading history; for example, constant amplitude load, single peak overload and block overload etc. Crack growth under variable amplitude loading exhibits retardation effect. In this study, the 4 point bending fatigue test was performed by hydrolic servo fatigue testing machine on 7075-T6 Al-alloy. The retardation effect of overload ratio and numbers of overload cycle was quantitatively studied. 1) Change of retardation effect against increment of overload ratio is more evident when the multiple overload is applied than single overload is done. 2) The number of overload cycle is very important factor about the crack growth retardation effect when the overload ratio is more than 1.75; that is not when the overload ratio is less than 1.75. 3) Overload affected zone size increased gradually by increment of crack growth retardation effect. 4) Crack driving force is more greatly reduced when the crack tip branched off two direction than it sloped to one direction.

  • This paper studied the causes of job stress of driving crews working in Metropolitan Transit Authorities in Daejeon, Daegu, Seoul Metro Line 9, and Incheon, analyzing psychological, physical, and environmental factors, along withdriving crews' assignments. Regarding driving crews' assignments, it was found that driving crews had strong senses of obligation for their job, and hence their aptitude for their job was in accordance, and also it was found that most driving crews worked devotedly with a desirable occupational view and pride. However, psychological and physical factors that contributed to stress were identified: lack of sleep, high task burden, physical fatigue, and boring daily life. Furthermore, the driving crews' irregular working conditions and irregular meal time and burden related to on-time transit service with prolonged immobilization raised their stress levels. In terms of external environmental factors, it was found that driving crews' anxiety due to possible accidents caused a roughly four-fold increase in stress levels compared to other factors. Furthermore, personnel system and salary issue were also found to be closely related to the driving crews' job stress.

  • Gears are reliable and efficient power transmission elements. They have been widely used in all kinds of machinery. Nowadays, resource conservation energy conservation environmental improvements from the request of the compact, light weight, high efficiency, low cost Higher efficiency is required. Tooth root and bottom profiles of cylindrical gears affect bending fatigue life, but they are hard to measure with conventional gear measuring machine(GMM), because GMM is normally customized to measure only gear working flanks. The authors try to develop a new type of GMM by installing an extra 3D scanning probe and control software to measure tooth root and bottom profiles. First, in order to measure in various directions, a 3D scanning probe has been attached to the GMM developed. Next, calibration algorithm has been developed. Deviations of the calibration results are measured and it is found that systematic error must be caused by heat from driving motors. A new alternative GMM with driving motors generating less heat was designed and two GMMs are compared. Finally, 3 Dimension measurement of tooth root and bottom profiles of cylindrical gears is described.

  • The main causes of traffic accidents while driving a car is of the driver's visual distraction. In this study, the color sensitivity of the information projected on the windshield were evaluated for HUD (Head Up Display) system which helps the driver's eyes on the road while driving. The driving Information were projected $9^{\circ}$ downward from front sight $0^{\circ}$ under lab's fluorescent lights, LED floorlights and the TV had having 25 [lux] illumination when driving at night environment and 100,000 [lux] of daylight environment. Munsell color hue of the basic five colors (R, Y, G, B, P) and the color of traffic lights YR, W were the color of the seven characters, each character were outlined by White, Gray except for W. Total of 19 experimental stimuli was shown in the environment of day and night driving for asking visibility information of color, fatigue, preferences, and evaluate the degree of interference. The results came out that the bright Y and G color is visibility significantly for daylight. Second, with the outline of the text, the color of the outline works as a background for luminance contrast effects and affects visibility. Third, without the outline, the glass in front of the vehicle acts as the background and the luminance contrast of characters achieve greater brightness and visibility. The luminance contrast between the stimuli and background should be considered for increasing color visibility for driving information which is an important factor for HUD commercialization.

  • This study presents the thermal cracking on a commercial vehicle ventilated brake disk. Distributions of temperature and thermal stress of the disk were analysed, using FEM analysis, under the several driving conditions with actual vehicle specifications. The results from the fatigue tests on the disk material were compared with those from FEM analysis. In case of deceleration of 0.6 g with initial vehicle speed of 97, 140, and 160 km/h, the maximum compressive stress at the disk surface of disk due to braking was 224, 318, and 362 MPa, respectively. It was estimated that each damage fraction of 0.00005, 0.00050, 0.00136 per full stop was imposed on the brake disk in case of deceleration of 0.6 g with initial vehicle speed of 97, 140, and 160 km/h, respectively.

  • The development of a crack propagation simulation model in consideration of crack closure behavior was discussed in the accompanying paper by the authors, Kim et al(2001). To verify crack propagation behavior under variable amplitude loading based on the model, calculations of effective crack driving stresses and corresponding propagation lives are carried out for load spectrums with various stress ratios, overload and underload. Good agreement is confirmed between test results in the literatures and simulations using the developed model.

  • In order to confirm the safety against vibration of high-pressure fittings for mobile hydrogen charging devices, the natural frequency was confirmed through ANSYS, and vibration data occurring during driving was applied to utilize the vehicle's operating power spectral density data specified in MIL-STD-810H regulations. Fatigue analysis and resonance were confirmed, and as a result, it was confirmed that the sum of the pure phase ratios was less than 1 for the driving history presented in the standard, and there was no risk of resonance.

  • This study derives load characteristics and analyzes the safety of plowshares operating in dry fields. We mounted a three-blade, reversible plow on a 23.7 kW tractor and measured the plow's tractive force as well as the torque from the engine output shaft on the rear axle under various working speeds (L4, M1, M2, M3). We chose a Korean test site of Seomyeon, Chuncheon with sandy soil texture, as determined using the USDA method. We constructed the load spectrum for torque and tractive force using measured data and derived the fatigue life of the plowshare from a stress-cycle (S-N) curve of the plow material. Our results show that the M3 gear maximizes the driving shaft torque loads and, applying the tractive force load spectrum, creates a cumulative damage sum of $4.14{\times}10^{-5}$. Considering sampling time, we estimate a fatigue life of 805 hours while using the M3 gear. When using the other working speeds, however, all of the stress levels fell within the endurance limits and, therefore, our model predicts infinite plowshare lifetimes. For this analysis, we used a yield strength of 1,079 MPa for the plowshare and static safety factors, analyzed using the maximum stress, between 6.83 and 8.63 under each working speed.
