A Study on Effect of Shot Peening on Fracture Toughness of Spring Steel (스프링강의 파괴인성에 미치는 쇼트피닝 효과에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the steel parts used at the aerospace and automobile industries are required to be used light weight parts. Therefore, used material, steel have to be a high stress, which is an indispensable condition in this field. At the consideration of parts design, high hardness of the lightweight parts have an benefit of saving fuel and material. A high stress of metal has a point of difference according to the shape of design, external cyclic load and condition of vibration. A crack generates on the surface of metal or under yield stress by defect of inner metal defect or surface defect and slowly, this crack grow stable growth. Finally, rapidity failure phenomena is happen. Fatigue failure_phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property therefor, anti-fatigue failure technology take an important part of current industries Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defect from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore, this paper investigated the effect on frcature toughness using shot peening which is improve the resistance of crack growth and crack expansion rate by fatigue that make a compressive residual stress on surface.

  • The lightness of components required on marine and shipbuilding industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, fatigue failure phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property. Therefore, antifatigue failure technology takes an important part of current industries. In this study, it was investigated about endurance and fatigue crack propagation rate of according to stress ratio of SMAW commonly using for welding structures in present. Fatigue crack propagation rate(da/dN) of low load(R=0.1) was lower than of high load(R=0.6) for piping weld. And in stage I, ${\Delta}$Kth, the threshold stress intensity factor of the weld under heavy load is higher than under small load. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the weld of stress ratio R=0.l than in the weld of stress ratio R=0.6.

  • To guarantee 20-25 years to the lifetime of the PV modules without failure, reliability test of the module is very important. Field-aged test of the outdoor environment is required. However, due to time constraints, accelerated testing is required to predict the lifetime of PV modules and find causes of failure. Failure is caused by many complex phenomena. In this study, we experimented two accelerated tests about corrosion and fatigue, respectively. First, temperature cycling test for fatigue were tested and Coffin-Manson equation was analyzed. Second, damp heat test for corrosion were tested and Eyring equation were analyzed. Finally, using two-mode failure model, we suggest a new lifetime model that analyze the phenomenon by combining two kinds of data.

In particular, fatigue failure phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property. Therefore, antifatigue failure technology takes an important part of current industries. Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defects from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore, in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9)by shot peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in stress ratio(R=0 1, R=0 3, R=0 6)was investigated considering fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, I arrived at the following conclusions: (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot peening material was lower than the unpeening material And in stage I, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, the threshold stress intensity factor, of the shot peening material is high in critical parts unlike the unpeening material. (2) Fatigue life shows more Improvement in the shot peening material than in the unpeening material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot peening processed operate the resistance of fatigue crack propagation.

  • The internal leaks of RCS pressure boundary valves may cause thermal fatigue crack because of the TASCS in RCS branch line. After experienced unisolable piping failures in several PWR plants, many studies have peformed to understand these phenomena and various methods were applied to ensure the structural integrity of piping. In this paper, the cause of unisolable piping failures and the alternatives to prevent recurrence of failure were reviewed. Also, the severity of piping failure including susceptibility of valve leaks was evaluated for the Westinghouse 2-loop plant. The length of turbulent penetration on RHR inlet piping was measured and, thermal fluid analysis and fatigue analysis was performed for this piping. As a means of ensuring the structural integrity, temperature monitoring and specialized UT and other alternatives were compared for the further application.

  • Fatigue is a process of progressive permanent internal structural change in a material subjected to repeitive stresses. These change may be damaging and result in progressive growth of cracks and complete fracture if the stress repetitins are sufficiently large. For structural members subjected to cyclic loads, the continuous and irrecoverable damage processes are taking place. These processes are referred as the cumulative damage processes due to fatigue loading. Moreover, increased use of high strength concrete makes the fatigue problem more important because the cross-section and dead weight are reduced by using high strength concrete. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete beams according to shear reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength under repeated loadings. For this purpose, comprehensive static and fatigue tests of reinforced concrete beams were conducted. The major test variables for the fatigue teats are the concrete strength and the amount of shear reinforcements. The increase of deflections and steel strains according to load repetition has been plotted and analyzed to explore the damage accumulation phenomena of reinforced concrete beams. An analytical model for shear fatigue behavior has been introduced to analyze the damage accumulation under fatigue loads. The failure mode and fatigue lives have been also studied in the present study. The comparisons between analytical results and experimental data show good correlation.

In particular, the fatigue failure phenomena, which occurs when using metal, increases the danger to human life and property. Therefore, antifatigue failure technology is an integral part of current industries. Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defect from the surface of steel, while improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in a stress ratio(R=0.1, R=0.3, R=0.6) was investigated, giving consideration to fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, following conclusions are drawn: (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot-peening material was lower than that of the un-peening material and in stage I, ΔKth, the threshold stress intensity factor of the shot-peen processed material is high in critical parts, unlike the un-peening material. Also m, fatigue crack growth exponent and number of cycle of the shot-peening material, was higher than that of the un-peening material, as concluded from effect of da/dN. (2) Fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot-peening material than in the un-peening material, and the compressive residual stress of surface on the shot-peen processed operate resistance of fatigue crack propagation.

Stochastic Fatigue Life Assesment based on Bayesian-inference (베이지언 추론에 기반한 확률론적 피로수명 평가)

  • In general, fatigue analysis is performed by using deterministic model to estimate the optimal parameters. However, the deterministic model is difficult to clearly describe the physical phenomena of fatigue failure that contains many uncertainty factors. With regard to this, efforts have been made in this research to compare with the deterministic model and the stochastic models. Firstly, One deterministic S-N curve was derived from ordinary least squares technique and two P-S-N curves were estimated through Bayesian-linear regression model and Markov-Chain Monte Carlo simulation. Secondly, the distribution of Long-term fatigue damage and fatigue life were predicted by using the parameters obtained from the three methodologies and the long-term stress distribution.
