A Study for Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior of KS50N Rail Steel under Welding Line (KS50N Rail 용접부의 피로균열 성장거동)

  • This thesis studied to evaluate the fatigue behavior and propagation of rail steel under welding line. Test of crack growth was performed by all member of rail under constant amplitude loading at the structures laboratory in Hongik University. The effect of the following parameters with initiated crack length on the bottom edge of rail were studied. Here, fracture mechanics mode is opening mode. and Testing Material is KS50N Rail. From analysis and experimented result on the three Point bending in the lab, This paper presented a effect of crack growth , shape and remaining service life. Further more, according to the variable crack length, variable section and the ratio of section the fatigue behavior and propagation were studied.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) signals, emanated during local failure of aluminum alloys, have been the subject of numerous investigations. It is well known that the characteristics of AE are strongly influenced by the previous thermal and mechanical treatment of the sample. Possible sources of AE during deformation have been suggested as the avalanche motion of dislocations, fracture of brittle particles, and debonding of these particles from the alloy matrix. The goal of the present study is to determine if AE occurring as the result of fatigue crack propagation could be evaluated by the joint time-frequency analysis method, short time Fourier transform (STFT), and Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD). The time-frequency analysis methods can be used to analyze non-stationary AE more effectively than conventional techniques. STFT is more effective than WVD in analyzing AE signals. Noise and frequency characteristics of crack openings and closures could be separated using STFT. The influence of various fatigue parameters on the frequency characteristics of AE signals was investigated.

  • This paper analyzed the extension effects of fatigue life and the application of pre-indentation in aircraft structural material such as aluminum alloys. The test specimen used the thin sheet of aluminum alloy with a single-edged notch. The experiments were conducted after making the pre-crack under a constant amplitude loading. As the fatigue life extension technique, the pre-indentation making an indent on the predicted path of crack propagation was applied. The work presented here discussed about a proper mathematical relation between crack growth rate and the range of stress intensity factor and about the generalization of crack growth mechanism with large retardation effect. A technique to enhance the applicability of pre-indentation if also mentioned.

Fatigue Life Assessment of Steel Bridge Butt Joint Weld with Defects (강교량 맞대기용접 결함부의 피로수명 평가)

  • There are many weld defects such as surface crack, lack of fusion, and incomplete penetration(IP) in the butt joint weld of the existing steel bridges. The crack-like defects may significantly reduce the life of the structure. This paper presents the procedure and the results of the fatigue life assessment of the butt joints with weld defects in the existing steel girder bridge. The butt joint welds with incomplete penetration were instrumented with strain gages to determine the stress histogram under normal traffic. Based on the measured stress histogram the crack propagation analysis were performed for the fatigue life assessment. By using the suggested procedure and methodology, one can decide the time of periodic inspection and the necessity of repair of the butt joint welds with serious weld defects in the existing steel bridge.   • Many experimental data of fatigue crack propagation show that the fatigue crack propagation process is stochastic. Therefore, the study on the crack propagation must be based on the probabilistic approach. In the present paper, fatigue crack propagation process is assumed to be a discrete Markov process and the method is developed, which can evaluate the reliability of the structural component by using Markov chain model(Unit step B-model) suggested by Bogdanoff. In this method, leak failure, plastic collapse and brittle fracture of the critical component are taken as failure modes, and the effects of initial crack distribution, periodic and non-periodic inspection on the probability of failure are considered. In this method, an equivalent load value for random loading such as wave load is used to facilitate the analysis. Finally some calculations are carried out in order to show the usefulness and the applicability of this method. And then some remarks on this method are mentioned.

  • From the viewpoint of linear fracture mechanics, the crack propagation behavior of two different structures having the same K-a relationship could be considered identical. In this study the stress distribution in an infinitely wide cracked plate with the same K-a relationship as in a real structure is defined as the equivalent stress distribution. Fatigue life of a real structural element can be predicted by applying the equivalent stress distribution to a simple structural element, and performing a fatigue crack propagation analysis. The K-a relationship for a structural member can be estimated by a finite element method or a simplified prediction method. The validity to obtain effective crack driving stresses by using the equivalent stress-distribution is examined.

  • The low-cycle fatigue crack growth behavior of SUS 304 Stainless steel was investigated at 650.deg. C by the nonlinear fracture mechanics. Crack Propagation can be separated in to cycle-dependent and time-dependent, the former is correlated with .DELTA. $J_{f}$ , J-intergral range and the latter is correlated with J', modified J integral. Transition from cycle-dependent to time-dependent crack growth was successfully predicted using the .betha. hypothesis, which was proposed by the authors on the basis of an analysis on the interaction of elastic and creep strain. To investigate the reliability of .betha.-hypothesis, experimenting by the change of stress-level, stress rate and frequency, following conclusions were obtained. (1) High temperature fatigue crack propagation was separated into cycle-dependent and time-dependent. (2) Transition of crack propagation was predicted by .DELTA. $J_{c}$/.DELTA.$_{f}$ or .betha. (3) Lower limit in cycle-dependent crack propagation was obtained..

A Study on the Fatigue Strength of Propeller Blades (프로펠러 날개의 피로강도에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, to reduce the noise and vibration levels of ships, high skewed marine propellers with thinner thickness are adopted widely, however, such propeller design trend causes to reduce the strength of blades. Propeller blades are rotating continuously in irregular wake field of ships. So, it is necessary to examine the strength of them precisely including from a viewpoint of fatigue strength. In present paper, the fatigue strength of propeller blades was investigated. Firstly, fatigue tests for Al Bronze, the representative propeller material, were carried out. The S-N curve was obtained for the assessment of the fatigue crack initiation life. And the material properties C, m for the fatigue crack propagation analysis based on the Paris' equation were derived. For the 2nd stage, the structural responses of propeller blades in irregular ship wake field was carried out using the finite element analysis code. And the fatigue strength of propeller blades were considered based on the calculated stress levels and material characteristics for fatigue strength.

  • The application of fracture mechanics have traditionally concentrated on cracks leaded by tensile stresses, and growing under an opening or mode I mechanism. However, many cases of failures occur from growth of cracks subjected to mixed mode loading. Several criteria have been proposed regarding the crack growth direction under mixed mode loadings. This paper is aimed at prediction of fatigue crack growth behaviour under mixed mode(I+II) in two dimensional branched type precrack. In this paper, the maximum tangential stress(MTS) criterion was used to predict crack growth direction. Not only experiment but also finite element analysis(FEA) was carried out. The theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results in this paper
