The fatigue crack propagation characteristics were investigated on dissimilar friction weld of two kind of heat-resisting steels (STR3 and STR35) commonly used in valve materials for vehicles. A small circular artificial defect was machined to induce fatigue crack at bonded line, heat affected zone and base metal of the weld on the surface of the specimens. From the results of the experiment, the fatigue limits of the materials STR3 and STR35 were obtained to be 429.0MPa and 409.4MPa respectably. The STR35 base metal and 1.0mm HAZ specimens showed 190% and 82% higher fatigue life than STR3 base metal. And the fatigue life of 1.0mm HAZ specimen was shown 99% on STR3 and 29% on STR35 higher than that of their base metal. But the fatigue life of weld interface specimen was shown 18% on STR3 and 72% on STR35 lower than that of their base metal because of the weld interface separation.

In the analysis of fatigue crack propagation behavior, the crack length is one of the most important factors. In the test of crack propagation, compliance method is widely used to detect crack length. The measurement of surface crack length is not so easy with compliance method. In this study, the image processing technique was applied to measure the surface crack length. CCD(Charge-coupled device) camera was used to observe the crack image and the computer program to detect crack length from stored crack image was developed. CCT(Center Cracked Tension) specimen was used to compare the compliance method with the image processing technique. The crack length which detected by the image processing techniques was found to be well consistent with that from the optical measurement.

A method of prediction for the fatigue life of surface crack, that is, initial cracks grow and penetrate through the thickness, was presented in the previous study of the author. Effects of parameters such as the initial crack length, material factors, etc., for the life were discussed. In this paper, the probabilistic distribution of the life is calculated. Effects of the distribution of parameters for the distribution of life were also discussed.

The fatigue crack opening behavior is analyzed using finite element method. Because extremely fine mesh subdivision is required when using constant stress constant strain triangular element, this study uses conventional two dimensional eight node isoparametric elements. Since plasitc zone size is similar to crack propagating length per each load cycle because of relatively large element size, a new analysis model that a crack propagates every two load cycle is suggested. the opening load and crack opening displacement can be obtained accurately by this method.

In this study, an effect that compressive residual stress formed by shot-peening the surface of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) at each shot velocity(1800, 2200, 2600, 3000rpm) on the fatigue crack growth property and threshold stress intensity factor, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, was examined. Followings are the result (1) Compressive residual stress on surface of specimen was determined at each -601 MPa(1800rpm), -638 MPa(2200rpm), -587 MPa (2600rpm), -550 MPa(3000rpm) by shot velocity of shot peening and threshold stress intensity factor, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, fatigue crack growth rate, da/dN, on fatigue crack growth is obstructed by the compressive residual stress was determined at each $5.619\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(Un-peening), $8.319\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(1800rpm), $8.797\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(2200rpm), $7.835\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(2600rpm), $7.352\;MPa\sqrt{m}$(3000rpm) (2) Existing compressive residual stress by effect of shot velocity of shot-peening on relation of crack length. a, and number of cycle, N, was 2 times progressed in case of 2200rpm than specimen of Un-peening on fatigue life. And fatigue life was 1.6 times progressed incase of 3000rpm by Over peening. (3) Fatigue life of Material on Paris' law, $da/dN=C({\Delta}K)^m$, that effect of material constant, C, and fatigue crack growth exponent, m, was influenced by effect of. C and m.
To investigate the effect of fatigue crack growth due to the surface residual stress, it is measured the residual stress distribution by x-ray diffraction at the crack tip each constant crack growth in the notch specimens, and quantitively assessed the effect of crack closure caused to the distribution of compressive stress at the crack tip from evaluating crack openning stress using the finite element analysis. It is concluded that the degree of the residual stress distribution at the crack tip is decreased with increasing the crack length. From the fact that it is similar to the crack openning stress ratio, it is found that the compressive residual stress distribution and size is related to the crack closure effect and surface residual stress field with propagating crack in the notch specimens depends on the stress intensity factor range at the crack tip.
The fatigue cracks initiate and propagate in the Armored Vehicle Launch Bridge (AVLB) components, especially like the splice doubler angle, splice plate, and bottom chord, due to the cyclic loading by repeated AVLB-launchings and tank-crossings. In this study, laboratory fatigue tests were conducted on six aluminum 2014-T6, four aluminum 7050-T76511, and four ASTM A36 steel compact-tension specimens to evaluate the crack growth behavior of the materials used for the components. The experimental results provide the relationship (Paris Law) between crack growth rate, da/dn, and stress intensity range, ${\Delta}K$, whose material dependent constants C and m can later be used in the life estimation of the components. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor, K, of the components with cracks. Because of the complexity of loading conditions and component geometry, several assumptions and simplifications are made in the FEM modeling. The FEM results, along with the results obtained from laboratory fatigue tests, are then utilized to estimate critical crack length and remaining life of the components.
In this paper we are particularly focusing on the dynamic crack fatigue life of a 25 m length wind turbine blade. The blade consists of composite materiel (glass/epoxy). This work consisted initially to make a theoretical study, the turbine blade is modeled as a Timoshenko rotating beam and the analytical formulation is obtained. After applying boundary condition and loads, we have studied the stress, strain and displacement in order to determine the critical zone, also show the six first modes shapes to the wind turbine blade. Secondly was addressed to study the crack initiation in critical zone which based to finite element to give the results, then follow the evolution of the displacement, strain, stress and first six naturals frequencies a function as crack growth. In the experimental part the laminate plate specimen with two layers is tested under cyclic load in fully reversible tensile at ratio test (R = 0), the fast fracture occur phenomenon and the fatigue life are presented, the fatigue testing exerted in INSTRON 8801 machine. Finally which allows the knowledge their effect on the fatigue life, this residual change of dynamic behavior parameters can be used to predicted a crack size and diagnostic of blade.

Contact fatigue damages on the rail surface, such as head checks and squats are a growing problem. The fatigue cracks forming on the contact surface grow according to load and lubricating conditions and may end up breaking the rail. Rail fracture can be avoided by preventing the cracks from reaching the critical length. Therefore, the crack growth rate needs to be estimated precisely according to the conditions of the track and load to develop a maintenance plan against rail damages. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanism of cracks initiation and growth on a rail due to repetitive rolling contact. In this study, we have investigated the crack growth behavior on the rail surface by using the twin-disc tests and the finite element analysis.
A study has been made on the behavior of microscopic fatigue crack growth at the stress level of the fatigue limit with ferrite-martensitic structures. For the above purpose, two types of the microstructures were prepared ; one is the microstructure having the ferrite encapsulating the islands of second phase martensite(FEM), the other is the microstructure with the martensite encapsulating the islands of ferrite(MEF). It has been pointed out that the fatigue limits of these microstructures are related to the critical stress at which the microcrack in the ferrite proceeds to the martensite. The high fatigue limit might be excepted for the MEF microstructure in which the critical crack length would be restricted within the second phase spacing in contrast with the FEM microstruture. However, the fatigue tests shows that no appreciable difference of the fatigue limits among them were recognized. Also, it turned out from the metallographic observations that the micro crack path is very much affected by the microstructures, so that the microcracks grow according to the 3-dimentional situation of its microstructures.
