This study is to apply the theory of fatigue fracture to solder joints under thermal cyclic loading and predict life of solder joint to failure. A 62Sn-36Pb-2Ag solder was used in this study. Tensile tests were preformed at temperatures of 15.dec. C, 50.dec. C and 85.dec. C in order to find terms of crack length "a". plastic strain range ""${\Delta}{\varepsilon}_p$" and temperature "T". Solder joint under thermal cyclic loading was analyzed by FEM. this FEM analysis together with the crack growth rate will provide the capability of the fatigue life prediction of solder joints and enhance the reliability od solder joint.

Material can be degraded by using it for a long service under the high temperature and pressure circumstances, Therefore, material degradation can affect the strength of mechanical structures. At present, the life prediction of the degraded structures is considered as an important technical problem. In this paper, the degraded 21/4Cr-lMo steel is the material used for about 10 years around 400.deg. C in an oil refinery plant. The recovered one was prepared out of the above degraded steel by heat treatment for one hour at 650.deg. C. The degradation effect was investigated through the tension test, Hardness test and Charpy impact test. On the smooth surface material, the fatigue crack initiation, growth and coalescence stages of the distributed small cracks were investigated with photographs, and the crack length and density were measured. The measuring results were analyzed by quantative and statistical methods.

This paper presents analytical methodologies for remaining life prediction of plain concrete structural components considering tension softening and size effects. Non-linear fracture mechanics principles (NLFM) have been used for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. Various tension softening models such as linear, bi-linear, tri-linear, exponential and power curve have been presented with appropriate expressions. Size effect has been accounted for by modifying the Paris law, leading to a size adjusted Paris law, which gives crack length increment per cycle as a power function of the amplitude of a size adjusted stress intensity factor (SIF). Details of tension softening effects and size effect in the computation of SIF and remaining life prediction have been presented. Numerical studies have been conducted on three point bending concrete beams under constant amplitude loading. The predicted remaining life values with the combination of tension softening & size effects are in close agreement with the corresponding experimental values available in the literature for all the tension softening models.
Although the previous researches evaluated the fatigue behavior of Al/GFRP laminates using the traditional fracture mechanism, their researches were not sufficient to do it : the damage zone of Al/GFRP laminates was occurred at the delamination zone instead of the crack-metallic damages. Thus, previous researches were not applicable to the fatigue behavior of Al/GFRP laminates. The major purpose of this study was to evaluate delamination behavior using the relationship between crack length (a) and delamination width (b) in Al/GFRP laminate. The details of investigation were as follows: 1) Relationship between the crack length (a) and the delamination width (b), 2) Relationship between the delamination aspect ratio (b/a) and the delamination area rate ((A$\_$D/)/subN// (A$\_$D/)$\_$All/), 3) The effect of delamination aspect ratio (b/a) on the delamination shape factor (f$\_$s/) and the delamination growth rate (dA$\_$D// da). As results, it was known that the delamination aspect ratio (b/a) was decreased and the delamination area rate ((A$\_$D/)$\_$N// (A$\_$D/)$\_$All/) was increased as the normalized crack size (a/W) was increased. And, the delamination shape factors (f$\_$s/) of the ellipse-II(f$\_$s3/) was greater than of the ellipse-I(f$\_$s2/) but that of the triangle (f$\_$s1/) was less than of the ellipse-I(f$\_$s2/).

By using the relation between stress intensity factor and AE parameter, new approach method for assessing the crack length and detectability of crack was proposed. Laboratory experiment was carried out to identify AE characteristics of fatigue cracks for compact tension specimen. The relationship between a stress intensity factor and AE signals activity as well as conventional AE parameter analysis was discussed. As a result, the features of specific parameter such as the length of crack growth the AE energy, the AE peak amplitude, and the cumulative AE hits, showed the almost same trend in their increase as the number of fatigue cycle increased. From the comparisons of peak amplitude and AE energy with stress intensity factor, it was verified that the higher stress intensity factors generated AE signals with higher peak amplitude and a larger number of AE counts. If we can get more reliable database for the relation between AE parameters and stress intensity factor, this approach will provide a good information for evaluating both the existence of crack and the minimum detectable size of crack.
Surface micro-crack grows along intergranular or transgranular region of crystal grains. But if it meets the barrier such as sessile dislocation and precipitates it loses straightness and deflects. Investigators had many difficulties in estimating fatigue life of smooth specimen because of the random distribution growth and coalescence of surface micro-cracks. The path of surface micro-crack has irregularity due to nonhomogeneous microstructure. Euclidian geometry can't quantify the shape of surface micro-crack but fractal geometry can. Therefore in this paper fractal dimension is measured at various stage of cycle ratio and estimated cycle ratio in 2024-T3 aluminium, alloy.
In order to simulate the crack connection between cords and the interply crack growth in the belt-layer of real tire, 2 ply rubber/cord laminate specimens with exposed edges were tested in 4~11mm displacement control. Measurement of the crack connection is evaluated when crack reaches the half of the length between 45$^{\circ}$ aligned cords, and the amount of the crack growth is measured by the steel probe method. 2 dimensional analytic modeling was performed to simulate the crack connection between cords at the exposed edges. Also, the theoretical life of the specimens was calculated from the crack connection life between cords(critical value) and from the critical value to the final failure by the use of Tearing energy(T); the strain energy release per unit area of one fracture surface of a crack. Then, theoretical life was compared with those of experiments. The life prediction up to the critical value has about 20% error compared to experimental life, and up to the final failure about 65% error. Therefore, total theoretical life has about 45% error compared to the experimental life, which is conceivable in the case of rubber.

Although the ultrasonic method has been developed and used widely in the fields, it has been used only for measuring the defect size and thickness loss. In this study, the relationship between surface wave attenuation through micro-crack growth and variation of velocity under repeated cyclic loading has been investigated. The specimens are adopted from 2.25Cr-1Mo steel, which is used for power plant and pipeline system, and have dimensions of $200{\times}40{\times}4mm$. The results of ultrasonic test with a 5MHz transducer show that surface wave velocity gradually decreases from the point of 60% of fatigue life and the crack length of 2mm with the increasing fatigue cycles. From the results of this study, it is found that the technique using the ultrasonic velocity change is one of very useful methods to evaluate the fatigue life nondestructively.

The investigation of delamination growth behavior in hybrid composite material such as FRMLs should be considered delamination growth rate, dA_D/da$ using the delamination shape factor, $f_S$ instead of traditional fracture mechanics parameters. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between delamination element (i. e. delamination width, b, delamination contour, c, delamination shape factor, $f_S$ and delamination growth rate, dA_D/da$) and delamination growth in FRMLs under cyclic bending moment. The delamination shape formed along the fatigue crack between aluminum layer and glass fiber/epoxy layer are measured by scanning method. The details of study are as follow : ⅰ) Relationship between crack length, a and delamination width, b. ⅱ) Variation of delamination growth rate, dA_D/da$ was attendant on delamination shape factors, $f_{S1}$, $f_{S2}$, $f_{S3}$. The test result indicated the delamination growth behavior depends in delamination element such as delamination width, b, delamination shape factors, $f_{S1}$, $f_{S2}$, $f_{S3}$.

In this study, the propagation behaviour and the closure phenomena of physically small surface cracks were investigated by the techinque of the Kikukawa-unloading elastic compliance method using a back face strain gage. The surface cracks initiated and propagated from notched specimens under constant amplitude bending load. The crack shape (aspect ratio) with approximately semi-circular at the early stage was changed to semi-elliptical as the cracks grew larger. The crack depth (a) could be expressed uniquenly by the crack length (c). The dependence of the crack propagation rate on the stress ratio R was strongly related in the lower ${\Delta}K$ range. The deceleration of the surface crack propagation rate was prominent in lower R during the crack length was small. When the propagation rate was rearranged with the effective stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}$K_{eff} the dependence of the crack propagation rate on the stress ratio R was found to be diminshed. These were caused by the crack closure phenomena that was most prominent at the lower propagation rate. The mechanism of crack closure phenomena was dominated by the plasticity-induced mechanism.
