Reliable experimental data as a key factor for design of mechanical structures

  • The experimentally determined mechanical behavior of the material under the prescribed service conditions is the basis of advanced engineering optimum design. To allow experimental data on the behavior of the material considered, uniaxial stress tests were made. The aforementioned tests have enabled the determination of mechanical properties of material at different temperatures, then, the material's resistance to creep at various temperatures and stress levels, and finally, insight into the uniaxial high cyclic fatigue of the material under different applied stresses for prescribed stress ratio. Based on fatigue tests, using modified staircase method, fatigue limit was determined. All these data contributes the reliability of the use of material in mechanical structures. Data representing mechanical properties are shown in the form of engineering stress-strain diagrams; creep behavior is displayed in the form of creep curves while fatigue of the material is presented in the form of S-N (maximum applied stress versus number of the cycles to failure) curve. Material under consideration was 18CrNi8 (1.5920) steel. Ultimate tensile strength and yield strength at room temperature and at temperature of $600^{\circ}C$: [${\sigma}_{m,20/600}=(613/156)MPa$; ${\sigma}_{0.2,20/600}=(458/141)MPa$], as well as endurance (fatigue) limit at room temperature and stress ratio of R = -1 : (${\sigma}_{f,20,R=-1}=285.1MPa$).

  • Fatigue crack growth and life have been estimated based on established empirical equations. In this paper, an alternative method using artificial neural network (ANN) -based model developed to predict fatigue damages simultaneously. To learn and generalize the ANN, fatigue crack growth rate and life data were built up using in-plane bending fatigue test results. Single fracture mechanical parameter or nondestructive parameter can't predict fatigue damage accurately but multiple fracture mechanical parameters or nondestructive parameters can. Existing fatigue damage modeling used this merit but limited real-time damage monitoring. Therefore, this study shows fatigue damage model using backpropagation neural networks on the basis of X -ray half breadth ratio B / $B_o$, fractal dimension $D_f$ and fracture mechanical parameters can estimate fatigue crack growth rate da/ dN and cycle ratio N / $N_f$ at the same time within engineering limit error ($5\%$).

  • This study investigates the fatigue characteristics of SM 490 A material specimens for the railway vehicle due to the welding type. The more stress ratio decreases, the more strength of fillet welded specimen decreases. At speciallly, when the stress ratio of TN(Plate with transverse fillet welded rib) specimens decreases 0.5, 0.1, and -0.1, the fatigue limit decreases unifomly. The strength of TN is higher than it of NCN in the compare of fillet welding type, but the strength of NCN(Non load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joint) is higher than it of CN(Load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joint), which these specimens have the rib in the both side. We analysis the strains on the weld positions of the TN specimens during the fatigue test for the investigation of crack initiation and crack growth. In the theses results, we could find the fatigue crack initiation point and time.

Reliability Improvement of Offshore Structural Steel F690 Using Surface Crack Nondamaging Technology

  • Microcracks can rapidly grow and develop in high-strength steels used in offshore structures. It is important to render these microcracks harmless to ensure the safety and reliability of offshore structures. Here, the dependence of the aspect ratio (As) of the maximum depth of harmless crack (ahlm) was evaluated under three different conditions considering the threshold stress intensity factor (Δkth) and residual stress of offshore structural steel F690. The threshold stress intensity factor and fatigue limit of fatigue crack propagation, dependent on crack dimensions, were evaluated using Ando's equation, which considers the plastic behavior of fatigue and the stress ratio. ahlm by peening was analyzed using the relationship between Δkth obtained by Ando's equation and Δkth obtained by the sum of applied stress and residual stress. The plate specimen had a width 2W = 12 mm and thickness t = 20 mm, and four value of As were considered: 1.0, 0.6, 0.3, and 0.1. The ahlm was larger as the compressive residual stress distribution increased. Additionally, an increase in the values of As and Δkth(l) led to a larger ahlm. With a safety factor (N) of 2.0, the long-term safety and reliability of structures constructed using F690 can be secured with needle peening. It is necessary to apply a more sensitive non-destructive inspection technique as a non-destructive inspection method for crack detection could not be used to observe fatigue cracks that reduced the fatigue limit of smooth specimens by 50% in the three types of residual stresses considered. The usefulness of non-destructive inspection and non-damaging techniques was reviewed based on the relationship between ahlm, aNDI (minimum crack depth detectable in non-destructive inspection), acr N (crack depth that reduces the fatigue limit to 1/N), and As.

  • Fatigue crack growth and life is estimated by various fracture mechanical parameters but affected by load, material and environment. Fatigue character of component without surface notch cannot be e valuated by above-mentioned parameters due to microstructure of in-service material. Single fracture mechanical parameter or nondestructive parameter cannot predict fatigue damage in arbitrary boundary condition but multiple fracture mechanical parameters or nondestructive parameters can Fatigue crack growth modelling with three point representation scheme uses this merit but has limit on real-time monitoring.   • Detection and non-propagating cracks of small fatigue crack for smooth and pre-cracked specimens were examined in a carbon steel. The fretting oxide induced crack closure triggered by the roughness induced crack closure has an important role in determing the length. The fatigue limit for the with no cracks or with a short pre-crack is lower at R=-1 than that at R=0. A non-propagating crack are quite different between points near the specimen's surface and those of deepest penetration.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the fatigue test data of pavement concrete. The static strength tests were carried out to check the compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tension strength at 56 days in order to minimize strength variation effect during test. The specimens were fabricated at twelves sections at a construction site of highway. The stress level and stress ratio of fatigue test were determined from static test results. The results are as follow: The flexural strength at 28 days mostly satisfied the criterion for design, but the compressive strength at 28 days were slightly below the criterion even though it satisfied at 56 days. The fatigue limit was 2 million cycles if the specimen was not failed to that cycles. The S-N curves were developed from the fatigue test results at each stress levels and each stress ratio. Then, the fatigue life of pavement concrete at a given stress level and fatigue strength of pavement concrete could be derived from these curves. Analysis using method No.2 was more acceptable because resulting of comparison and analysis using method No.2 was presented 2 sections were presented $R^2$ < 0.7, and other 2 sections were presented 0.7 < $R^2$ < 0.8, and the others 8 sections were $R^2{\geq}0.8$.

  • Not only difference of fatigue crack growth and propagation behavior resulted from the grain size, the hardness ratio and volume fraction in M.E.F. dual phase steel composed of martensite in hard phase and ferrite in soft phase, but also the effects of the plastic constraint were investigated by fracture mechanics and microstructural method. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) The fatigue endurance of M.E.F. steel increases with decreasing the grain size, increasing the ratio of hardness and volume fraction. 2) The initiation of slip and crack occures faster as the stress level goes higher. These phenomena result from the plastic constraint effect of the second phase. 3) The crack propagation rate in the constant stress level is faster as the grain size gets larger, the ratio of hardness lower and volume fraction smaller.

Evaluation of Multiaxial Fatigue Strength of a Urban Railway Wheel Steel (도시철도 차량 차륜재의 다축 피로강도 평가)

  • Uniaxial and biaxial torsional fatigue tests were conducted on the samples extracted from urban railway wheel steel. Ultimate and yield strengths of the steel were 1027.7 MPa and 626 MPa, respectively. The uniaxial fatigue limit was 422.5 MPa, corresponding 67% of the ultimate tensile strength. The ratio of ${\tau}_e/{\sigma}_e$ was 0.63. Fatigue strength coefficient and exponent were 1319.5 MPa and 0.339, respectively. Maximum principal and equivalent strain were found to be adequate parameter to predict fatigue lifetime of the steel under multiaixal fatigue condition.

Fatigue Properties of Friction Weld According to the Location of Small Artificial Defect (미소인공결함의 위치에 따른 마찰용접부의 피로특성)

  • In this study, the rotary bending fatigue test was carried out with two kinds of base metal, martensite stainless steel STR3 and austenite stainless steel STR35 and the dissimilar friction welded material with them. To compare the fatigue fifes according to the notch positions, the small circular defect was worked on the bonded line, 1.0mm and 0.5mm distance form the bonded line. The fatigue limits of the STR3 and STR35 base metal were 429.0MPa and 409.4MPa respectably. In comparison with fatigue life at the same notch positions, the STR35 specimens showed about 190% for base metal, 82% for 1.0mm distance notched specimens higher than that of the STR3. But the fatigue life of the 0.5mm distance notched STR35 specimen showed about 35% lower than that of the STR3 specimen. And the bonded line notched specimen was much lower fatigue life than the other specimens because of separation of the bonded line.
