Based on translation models, both Gaussian and non-Gaussian wind fields are generated using spectral representation method for investigating the influence of non-Gaussian characteristics and directivity effect of wind load on fatigue damage of wind turbine. Using the blade aerodynamic model and multi-body dynamics, dynamic responses are calculated. Using linear damage accumulation theory and linear crack propagation theory, crack initiation life and crack propagation life are discussed with consideration of the joint probability density distribution of the wind direction and mean wind speed in detail. The result shows that non-Gaussian characteristics of wind load have less influence on fatigue life of wind turbine in the area with smaller annual mean wind speeds. Whereas, the influence becomes significant with the increase of the annual mean wind speed. When the annual mean wind speeds are 7 m/s and 9 m/s at hub height of 90 m, the crack initiation lives under softening non-Gaussian wind decrease by 10% compared with Gaussian wind fields or at higher hub height. The study indicates that the consideration of the influence of softening non-Gaussian characteristics of wind inflows can significantly decrease the fatigue life, and, if neglected, it can result in non-conservative fatigue life estimates for the areas with higher annual mean wind speeds.
The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the fatigue life to apply the vibration fatigue analysis considering the stiffness change of the spot welding due to fatigue damage accumulation. For this, the mechanical and fatigue properties of base and spot welded standard specimens were obtained through the tensile and constant amplitude fatigue test. The transfer function of the spot-welded structure was obtained from the frequency response analysis and fatigue analyisis was performed under the condition of PSD=0.11. A vibration fatigue analysis that considered changes in the frequency response due to the fatigue damage that is, failure of some wleding point was conducted on spot-welded structure. The fatigue life of the spot-welded structure was determined by combining the transfer function, the S-N curve of the tensile-shear spot-welded joint and the input PSD.
Traditionally used analytical approach to predict the fatigue failure of reinforced concrete (RC) structure is generally conservative and has certain limitations. The nonlinear finite element method (FEM) offers less expensive solution for fatigue analysis with sufficient accuracy. However, the conventional implicit dynamic analysis is very expensive for high level computation. Whereas, an explicit dynamic analysis approach offers a computationally operative modelling to predict true responses of a structural element under periodic loading and might be perfectly matched to accomplish long life fatigue computations. Hence, this study simulates the fatigue behaviour of RC beams with finite element (FE) assemblage presenting a simplified explicit dynamic numerical solution to show computer aided fatigue behaviour of RC beam. A commercial FEM package, ABAQUS has been chosen for this complex modelling. The concrete has been modelled as a 8-node solid element providing competent compression hardening and tension stiffening. The steel reinforcements are simulated as two-node truss elements comprising elasto-plastic stress-strain behaviour. All the possible nonlinearities are duly incorporated. Time domain analysis has been adopted through an automatic Newmark-β time incremental technique. The program consists of twelve RC beams to visualize the real behaviour during fatigue process and to obtain the reliability of the study. Both the numerical and experimental results indicate a redistribution of stresses along the time and damage accumulation of beam which severely affect the serviceability and ultimate capacity of RC beam. The output of the FEM analysis demonstrates good match with the experimental consequences which affirm the efficacy of the computer aided model. The controlled fatigue damage evolution at service fatigue load limits makes the FE model an efficient tool in predicting high cycle fatigue behaviour of RC structures.
A new type of connection for steel-concrete composite bridges was developed by the Steel Structures Laboratory of Ecole Poytechinque $F{\acute{e}}d{\acute{e}}rale$ de Lausanne. Resistance to longitudinal shear is based on the development of shear stresses in the confined interfaces which form the connection. Confinement is provided by the reinforced concrete slab which encloses the connection and restrains the uplift (lateral separation) of the interfaces by developing normal stresses. The experimental investigation of the interfaces, under static and cyclic loading, enabled the development of the laws describing the structural behaviour of each interface. Those laws were presented by the authors in previous papers. The current paper focuses on the continuity of the research. It presents the experimental investigation on the new connection by means of push-out tests on specimens submitted to static and cyclic shear loading. Investigation revealed that the damage in the connection, due to cyclic loading, is expressed by the accumulation of a residual slip. A safe fatigue failure criterion is proposed for the connection which enabled the verification of the connection for the fatigue limit state with respect to the limit of fatigue. A numerical model is developed which takes into account the laws describing the interface behaviour and the analytical expressions for the confinement effect, the latter obtained by performing finite element analysis. This numerical model predicts the shear resistance of the connection and enables to assess its fatigue limit which is necessary for the fatigue design proposed.

In this paper, the normalized variable V=(log N-B)(log ${\Delta}{\sigma}-C$-C), as derived from the probabilistic S-N field of Castillo and Canteli, is taken as a reference for calculation of damage accumulation and probability of failure using the Miner number in scenarios of variable amplitude loading. Alternative damage measures, such as the classical Miner and logarithmic Miner, are also considered for comparison between theoretical lifetime prediction and experimental data. The suitability of this approach is confirmed for it provides safe lifetime prediction when applied to fatigue data obtained for riveted joints made of a puddle iron original from the Fao bridge, as well as for data from experimental programs published elsewhere carried out for different materials (aluminium and concrete specimens) under distinct variable loading histories.
Camber with positive deflection is one of the very important design parameters in the manufacture of railway coach. Positive camber is defined as concave shape such as an arch and it increases the strength of structure remarkably. But during the operation of a structure, the positive camber turns into negative camber and it loses the strength of structure. Therefore we should consider the camber effect when we evaluate the fatigue strength of negative cambered structure. For this purpose, we made a model of negative cambered locomotive car body and performed structural analysis and also we measured the dynamic loads at critical points during commercial line operation. Fatigue strength of locomotive was calculated by applying Miner's damage accumulation rule. Fatigue strength of the two locomotives which have different camber were compared to find out the effect of camber on dynamic load amplitude. We found that the more negative camber a locomotive had, the shorter fatigue strength obtained.

The effect of residual stress on fatigue crack growth was investigated in terms of finite element analysis. Simulations were performed on a CT specimen in plane strain. An interface-cohesive element that accounts for damage accumulation due to fatigue along the notch direction has been used. Numerical results show that fatigue crack growth rate slows down when compressive residual stress field exists in front of the crack tip.

Since fretting fatigue damage accumulation occurs over relatively small volumes, the role of the microstructure is quite significant in fretting fatigue analysis. The heterogeneity of discrete grains and their crystallographic orientation can be accounted for using continuum crystallographic cyclic plasticity models. Such a constitutive law used in parametric studies of contact conditions may ultimately result in more thorough understanding of realistic fretting fatigue processes. The primary focus of this study is to explore the influence of microstructure as well as the magnitude of the normal force and tangential force amplitude during the fretting fatigue process. Fretting maps representing cyclic plastic strain behaviors are also developed to shed light on the cyclic deformation mechanisms.

This study proposes a fatigue reliability evaluation procedure for steel-composite high-speed railway bridge based on dynamic analysis and investigates the effectiveness of Tuned Mass Damper(TMD) in terms of the extension of fatigue life of the bridge. For the fatigue reliability evaluation, the limit state is determined using S-N curve and linear fatigue-damage accumulation. Dynamic analyses are peformed repeatedly to consider the uncertainties of train-velocity and damping ratio of the bridge. The distribution of random variables related to fatigue damage for the intended service life is then statistically estimated from analytical results. Finally, the fatigue reliability indices are obtained by means of the Advanced First-Order Second-Moment (AFOSM) method. Through numerical simulation of a steel-composite bridge of 40m span, the effectiveness of TMD on fatigue life of the bridge is examined and the results are presented.
