  • The third-rail system is an important device supplying power directly to the Maglev train through physical contact with the collecting shoe. It is directly related to safety and reliability for the running of Maglev. However, most the third-rail system used in Korea depend on foreign product or technologies, Korea Urban Maglev in the development of appropriate power feeding is urgent. In particular, the turnout section is the weakness point in the system because bending force by turnout section movement and fatigue caused by repetitive motion as well as the expansion by temperature, the forces by Maglev collecting shoe is added th the third-rail. Therefore, this paper proposes the third-rail system appropriate for Korean Urban Maglev of turnout section. To verify the structural stability of POSCO ICT third-rail system, the finite element analysis and physical testing was performed. The third-rail is fixed on each side of the turn-out section steel structure by epoxy insulation supporter and the integral behaviors are occurred. Therefore, the maximum horizontal displacements of each support are investigated and then, it is applied to finite element model of the third-rail to investigate the moments and stress. Also, the bending test about one million times and Expansion Joint for the third-rail was performed. The third-rail system safety and reliability was identified by test line on Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials in Deajeon for under the actual usage environment such as the Maglev and turn-out operation.

  • The application of seismic separation joints that can improve the deformation capacity of piping is an effective way to improve seismic performance. Seismic separation joints capable of axial expansion and bending deformation are installed where deformation is expected and used for the purpose of safely protecting the piping. Bellows are flexible and have low stiffness, so they can be used as seismic separation joints because they have excellent ability to respond to relatively large deformation. In this study, the seismic performance and limit state for bending deformation of 2-ply and 3-ply bellows specimens were evaluated. Seismic performance was evaluated by applying an increasing cyclic load to consider low-cycle fatigue due to seismic load. In order to confirm the margin for the limit state of the evaluated seismic performance, an experiment was conducted in which a cyclic loading of constant amplitude was applied. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the bellows specimen was made of stainless steel and had a high elongation, so that the 2-ply bellows specimen had the limit performance of resisting within 3 cycles even at the maximum forced displacement of the 3-ply bellows specimen.

  • The endurance reliability assessment of a highly complex mechanism is generally predicted by the fatigue life based on simple stress analysis. This study discusses various fatigue life assessment techniques for an automobile clutch snap ring. Finite element analyses were conducted to determine the structural stress on the snap ring. Structural stress that is insensitive in regards to the mesh size and type definition is presented in this study. The structural stress definition is consistent with elementary structural mechanics theory and provides an effective measure of a stress state that pertains to fatigue behavior of welded joints in the form of both membrane and bending components. Numerical procedures for both solid models and shell or plate element models are presented to demonstrate the mesh-size insensitivity when extracting the structural stress parameters. Conventional finite element models can be used with the structural stress calculations as a post-processing procedure. The two major implications from this research were: (a) structural stresses pertaining to fatigue behavior can be consistently calculated in a mesh-insensitive manner regardless of the types of finite element models; and (b) by comparing with the clutch snap-ring fatigue test data, we should predict the fatigue fractures of an automobile clutch snap ring using this method.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the material properties of stainless steel 316L specimens of untreated and UNSM treated material, hydrogen attacked material(100 bar, $300^{\circ}C$ at 120 h) and UNSM treated hydrogen attacked material at room temperature. Results demonstrated that the hydrogen attacked materials showed a tendency toward a slightly decreased fatigue strength, while the hydrogen embrittlement effect was smaller than the S-N curve of conventional untreated material. As compared to untreated material, the fatigue limit of the UNSM treated material increased by 43.8%, while it was 57.1% higher in the UNSM treated hydrogen attacked material than in untreated hydrogen attacked material. The plastic deformation layer was ${\sim}152{\mu}m$ thick, as confirmed by maps showing the level of local plastic deformation affected by the UNSM treatment in three ways: an image quality map, inverse pole figure map, and kernel average misorientation map captured via electron back scatter diffraction. Owing to hydrogen embrittlement, about 90% of surface cracks were smaller than the average grain size of $35{\mu}m$.

  • Gear reducers are widely used for various agricultural machinery applications such as greenhouses, tractors, and agricultural vehicles. However, thermal deformation and surface pitting at gear tooth flank frequently occur in gear reducers due to high torque. Thus, surface heat treatment of gears is required to improve wear and fatigue resistance. The objective of this study was to simulate the load capacity of the agricultural gear reducer. The simulation was performed for the following three surface heat treatment methods: untreated gears, nitriding heat treatment, and induction hardening method, those mostly used for agricultural gear reducers. The load capacity of the gear reducer was simulated using the safety factor, limit bending stress, and limit contact stress of the gear. The simulation of the load capacity was conducted using KISSsoft commercial software for gear analysis. The main results of simulation test were as follows: first, the nitriding heat treatment resulted in the highest safety factor for bending stress, which was increased about 77% from those of the untreated gears. Second, the induction hardening was the highest safety factor for contact stress, which was increased about 150% from those of the untreated gears. The safety factor for contact stress of the induction hardening was increased about 64% from those of the nitriding heat treatment. The study result suggested that the surface heat treatments could enhance load capacity and that the method of surface heat treatment should be determined based on simulation results for appropriate use scenarios.

  • The fatigue behavior of LIPCA was so sensitive to the manufacturing condition, the environmental factors and the change of the test apparatus. Therefore, we could be considering not only the relationship between the stroke range $({\Delta}h)$ and actuating frequency but also the relationship between the stroke range $({\Delta}h)$ and the total effective moment $(M^E)$. Thus, this study proposed the calculation method of the applying $M^E$ when the $({\Delta}h)$ of LIPCA was increased from 1.mm to 20mm. To estimate the relationship between the total effective moment $(M^E)$ and the Bernoulli-Euler bending moment (M) was reviewed. And the residual stress distribution of LIPCA and THUNDER using the CLT was evaluated. In conclusions, converting the $({\Delta}h)$ of LIPCA to the radius of curvature (p) and calculating the $(M^E)$, it was found that the p by the $M^E$ changed similarly as the $({\Delta}h)$. It was found that the $M^E$ was 2.2 times as the M. While CFRP and PZT of LIPCA, which had the superior compressive characteristic, had the compressive residual stress, GFRP was subject to the tensile residual stress. Since this reversed configuration between the compressive residuals stress and the tensile one was made, the requirement of the stroke range $({\Delta}h)$ increase was satisfied.

  • CNT-polypropylene (PP) composites were compounded by solvent dispersion method with uniform dispersion by using twin screw extruder. Damage sensing effects based on conductive carbon nanotubes (CNT) were evaluated to monitor the internal damage of CNT-PP composites using electrical resistance measurement. Mechanical and interfacial properties of CNT-PP composites were investigated and compared with neat PP. The mechanical properties of PP matrix were improved after adding CNT, because of the reinforcing effect of CNT fillers. In order to monitor the internal damage of CNT-PP composite, the change in electrical resistance of the composites was measured under fatigue loading and bending tests. CNT fillers exhibited good sensing under electrical resistance measurements. It is shown that CNT-PP composites with low CNT contents allow identifying critical cyclic loading, which are found to be accompanied with the internal failure.

  • Recently, a demand of ferritic STS is increasing rapidly in automobile exhaust system. Exhaust manifolds are the part nearest to the engine so that the material is exposed to high temperature exhaust gas. Excellent heat resistant properties, especially high temperature strength, thermal fatigue resistance and high corrosion resistance are necessary for these parts. STS429L contains 15 weight percent of Cr and low Mo, so has good price competitive. And it has excellent high temperature strength and corrosion resistance, so receives attentions as material that applying to exhaust manifold. In tensile test of lap joint welded STS 429L, most of specimens are failed in base metal, but occurs brittle fracture in weld metals at some specimens in the face of good welding conditions. In the process of tensile test, lap joint welded STS429L specimens are transformed locally. The brittle fracture occurs that local transforming area exists in weld metals. But, butt welding specimens made by same materials showed ductile fracture in tensile test and bending test. In this study, suppose the reason of brittle fracture is in the combined local transform and tensile stress, through analysis of bead geometry, evaluate geometrical factor of brittle fracture in lap joint welded STS429L.

  • The microstructure and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of deposit weld metal were investigated for a 30 mm- thick plate welded with flux cored arc welding (FCAW) and submerged arc welding (SAW) processes. The CTOD test was carried out both as welded condition and as stress-relieved specimen by local compression. The crack growth rates in FCAW were faster than those in a SAW, and the acicular ferrite content by the SAW process was increased relatively more than that by the FCAW process. The fatigue crack growth rate in a welded specimen was faster than that in locally compressed specimen. The CTOD value of locally compressed specimens was lower than that of as welded specimen. Furthermore, the CTOD value tested with the SAW process was higher than that tested with the FCAW process.

  • Gear train in the automobile to be used for controlling gas flow in automobiles consists of spur gears with involute tooth type in multiple stages. This spur gear is designed considering to the high power transfer efficiency, bending stress and contact stress in the static and dynamic analysis. The torque has been increased simultaneously the angular velocity has been decreased through the stages after being supplied by AC synchronous motor. This apparatus is controlled by electrical devices such as the PIC microprocessor, hall sensor and other electric components. By comparing the preset data of PIC microcomputer which is supplied by external DC electric power with the value set of hall sensor which detects the rotation angle position, PIC microcomputer thus controls AC motor and gear train according to the program algorithm which includes the on-off control and PWM motor driving method. As the result of the experiment such as performance, fatigue, torque test, we can conclude that this system is superior to the same and familiar foreign systems.
