In this paper we discuss spent fuel management options in the Republic of Korea (ROK) from two interrelated perspectives: Centralized dry cask storage and spent fuel pyroprocessing and burning in sodium fast reactors (SFRs). We argue that the ROK will run out of space for at-reactors spent fuel storage by about the year 2030 and will thus need to transition centralized dry cask storage. Pyroprocessing plant capacity, even if approved and successfully licensed and constructed by that time, will not suffice to handle all the spent fuel discharged annually. Hence centralized dry cask storage will be required even if the pyroprocessing option is successfully developed by 2030. Pyroprocessing is but an enabling technology on the path leading to fissile material recycling and burning in future SFRs. In this regard we discuss two SFR options under development in the U.S.: the Super Prism and the Travelling Wave Reactor (TWR). We note that the U.S. is further along in reactor development than the ROK. The ROK though has acquired more experience, recently in investigating fuel recycling options for SFRs. We thus call for two complementary joint R&D project to be conducted by U.S. and ROK scientists. One leading to the development of a demonstration centralized away-fromreactors spent fuel storage facility. The other involve further R&D on a combined SFR-fuel cycle complex based on the reactor and fuel cycle options discussed in the paper.
This study was conducted to evaluate the proteolysis trends and change in meat quality during 10 days of cold storage in duck M. pectoralis major (PM) and M. iliotibialis (IL). Duck IL had a higher pH and greater degree of lightness but lower cooking loss than PM (p<0.05). During the 10-day cold storage, the pH value of PM declined significantly (p<0.05), while the meat quality traits of IL were not affected by cold storage (p>0.05). In PM, the redness increased from day 1 to day 5, while cooking loss was lower on day 10 compared to day 5 (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in the activities of cathepsin B and proteasome 20S during cold storage (p>0.05). The activity of calpains declined gradually during 10 days of storage (p<0.05), and the activity of calpains in PM was higher than that in IL (p<0.05). A total of 5,155 peptides were detected and derived from 34 proteins of duck PM muscle, whereas 4,222 peptides derived from 32 proteins were detected from duck IL muscle. Duck PM muscle was composed only of fast type of muscle fiber, whereas IL muscle was composed of both slow and fast types. The proteins responsible for glycolysis or myofibrillar proteins were closely related to changes in meat color or water-holding capacity during cold storage. These results suggest that changes in meat quality characteristics during cold storage are closely related to protein degradation, which is also related to the distribution of muscle fiber types.

Energy storage is a key issue when integrating large amounts of intermittent and non-dispatchable renewable energy sources into electric power systems. To maintain the instantaneous power balance and to compensate for the influence of power fluctuations from renewable sources, flexible capability for power control is needed. Adjustable Speed Pumped Storage Power Generator is pumped storage unit that is adjustable for pump output adjustments as well as the highest efficiency operations because it has fast response time. In this paper we address the adjustable speed pumped storage power generator for frequency control against the intermittence of wind turbine output and calculate the appropriate capacity of adjustable speed pumped storage power generator.

In this paper, we design and implement a distributed web-storage and a group office system based on the distributed web-storage. It is easier to customize the proposed group office according to user's demands than existing web-based applications. Our proposed web-storage is distributed system which consists of multiple storage servers. The web-storage provides storage with considering the user's location so as to provide fast storage service.
Long turn-off time limits high frequency operation of Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs). Turn-off time decreases with increases in the recombination rate of minority carriers at switching transients. Fast neutron irradiation on a Si BJT incurs lattice damages owing to the displacement of silicon atoms. The lattice damages increase the recombination rate of injected holes with electrons, and decrease the hole lifetime in the base region of pnp Si BJT. Fast neutrons generated from a beryllium target with 30 MeV protons by an MC-50 cyclotron were irradiated onto pnp Si BJTs in experiment. The experimental results show that the turn-off time, including the storage time and fall time, decreases with increases in fast neutron fluence. Additionally, it is confirmed that the base current increases, and the collector current and base-to-collector current amplification ratio decrease due to fast neutron irradiation.
As the automic power plant is increased, load leveling energy storage system becomes more important. Pumped hydroelectric storage, used in the present, has too storage efficiency and difficulty in selecting site. But SMES(Superconducting Magnet Energy Storage) has high storage efficiency (90%), fast time response characteristics and ease of location. The general object of SMES with electric power system is the minimization overall production cost. This paper presents a method for the economic operation of SMES by Dynamic Programming.

Experimantal evaluation of an energy storage device with high rotational speed to store regenerative energy which might be generated during the braking period of the trains is presented. The proposed ESS is small scale model and has 5kW output power, high rotational speed. In general railway trains generate regenerative energy for 10-20 sec when the train brakes and also high traction energy is needed for very short moment (10 sec) when the train increases the traction force. Considering such characteristics of the railway system energy storage device for the railway should have very fast response property. Among the various energy storage devices flywheel energy storage system has the fastest response property, which means that flywheel ESS is the most suitable for the railway system.

The conventional method of improving the transient stability in a power system is the use of reactive power compensation devices, such as the STATCOM and SVC. However, this traditional method cannot prevent the rapid voltage collapse brought about by the stalling of the motor due to a system fault. On the other hand, the ESS (Energy Storage System) provides fast-acting, flexible reactive and active power control. The fast-acting power compensation provided by an energy storage system plays a significant role in enhancing the transient stability after a major fault in the power system. In this paper, a method of enhancing the transient stability using an energy storage system is proposed for power systems including a dynamic load, such as a large motor. The effectiveness of the energy storage system compared to conventional devices in enhancing the transient stability of the power system is presented. The results of the simulations show that the simultaneous injection of active and reactive power can enhance the transient stability more effectively.

In this paper, we introduce a novel Climate & Environment Database System (CEDS). The CEDS is developed by the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences (NIMS) to provide easy and efficient user interfaces and storage management of climate model data, so improves work efficiency. In uploading the data/files, the CEDS provides an option to automatically operate the international standard data conversion (CMORization) and the quality assurance (QA) processes for submission of CMIP6 variable data. This option increases the system performance, removes the user mistakes, and increases the level of reliability as it eliminates user operation for the CMORization and QA processes. The uploaded raw files are saved in a NAS storage and the Cassandra database stores the metadata that will be used for efficient data access and storage management. The Metadata is automatically generated when uploading a file, or by the user inputs. With the Metadata, the CEDS supports effective storage management by categorizing data/files. This effective storage management allows easy and fast data access with a higher level of data reliability when requesting with the simple search words by a novice. Moreover, the CEDS supports parallel and distributed computing for increasing overall system performance and balancing the load. This supports the high level of availability as multiple users can use it at the same time with fast system-response. Additionally, it deduplicates redundant data and reduces storage space.
