  • This paper presents a new method with time-varying boundary layer and input gain, variated by Fuzzy Logic Control(FLC) by means of the system state in Sliding Mode Control (SMC). In addition to the time-varying boundary layer, the time-varying range of the fuzzy membership function has an effect on not only chattering reduction but also fast response characteristics. On the basis of SMC with time-varying boundary and FLC with time-varying input and output range, a computer simulation for inverted pendulum results in elimination of the chattering phenomenon and fast response.

  • This paper deals with torque harmonic characteristics and its reduction design of induction motors for electric vehicle (EV) propulsion. For calculating the stator harmonic flux of squirrel-cage induction motor, the numerical methods have been employed on the structural configuration design of stator and rotor teeth. In particular, torque ripples including spatial harmonics are obtained by Finite Element Method (FEM), and their individual harmonic components are identified with Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). In this paper, design modification on the teeth surface gives rise to the significant reduction of torque ripples including spatial torque harmonics, which have been obtained with FEM.

  • Data storage related with writing and retrieving requires high storage capacity, fast transfer rate and less access time. Today any data storage system cannot satisfy these conditions, however holographic data storage system can perform faster data transfer rate because it is a page oriented memory system using volume hologram in writing and retrieving data. System can be constructed without mechanical actuating part so fast data transfer rate and high storage capacity about 1Tb/cm3 can be realized. In this research, to correct errors of binary data stored in holographic data storage system, a new method for reduction errors is suggested. First, find cluster centers using subtractive clustering algorithm then reduce intensities of pixels around cluster centers. By using this error reduction method following results are obtained ; the effect of Inter Pixel Interference noise in the holographic data storage system is decreased and the intensity profile of data page becomes uniform therefore the better data storage system can be constructed.

  • This paper presents a fast block-matching algorithm based on the normalized cross-correlation, where the elimination order is determined based on the gradient magnitudes of subblocks in the current macroblock. Multilevel Cauchy-Schwartz inequality is derived to skip unnecessary block-matching calculations in the proposed algorithm. Also, additional complexity reduction is achieved re-using the normalized cross correlation values for the spatially neighboring macroblock because the search areas of adjacent macroblocks are overlapped. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the speed-up ratio up to about 3 times in comparison with the existing algorithm.

  • Critical issues in the development targets for the future fast reactor(FR) cycle system, including sodium-cooled FR were to ensure safety assurance, efficient utilization of resources, reduction of environmental burden, assurance of nuclear non-proliferation, and economic competitiveness. A promising design concept of sodium-cooled fast reactor JSFR is proposed aiming at fully satisfaction of the development targets for the next generation nuclear energy system. A roadmap toward JSFR commercialization is described, to be followed up in a new framework of the Fast reactor Cycle Technology development(FaCT) Project launched in 2006.

  • Multigrid method has been used widely to solve elliptic problems because of its applicability to many class of problems and fast convergence ([1], [3], [9], [10], [11], [12]). The estimate of convergence rate of multigrid is one of the main objectives of the multigrid analysis ([1], [2], [5], [6], [7], [8]). In many problems, the convergence rate depends on the regularity of the solutions([5], [6], [8]). In this paper, we present an improved estimate of reduction factor of multigrid iteration based on the proof in [6].

  • Intra prediction in HEVC is also significantly improved from H.264/AVC with the increased prediction modes up to 35 that results in increase of the complexity cost. Hence, a fast intra mode decision algorithm is required for real-time applications. A fast intra mode decision is proposed in this paper for further complexity reduction in addition to the RMD (Rough Mode Decision) that has been adopted into the HEVC reference software, referred to as HM, for fast intra prediction. The proposed method reduces the complexity of intra mode decision by limiting the number of search modes in both steps of RMD and the final mode decision. Experimental results show that the proposed method provide about 13.2% encoding time reduction with 1.0% BD-rate increase on average over test sequences in HM 12.0.

  • Cr(VI) reduction was successfully achieved in the presence of cationic micelles (CMs) under visible light illumination. Micelle formation of cationic surfactants seems to be critical in Cr(VI) reduction. Cr(VI) was reduced very fast above the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of CTAB solutions, but was not reduced at all either below or around the cmc of CTAB. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) was enhanced in the absence of dissolved oxygen, supporting that the removal of Cr(VI) should be achieved via a reductive pathway. When CTAB was substituted by Brij 35 or SDS, the reduction of Cr(VI) was negligible. This indicates that the electrostatic interaction between Cr(VI) and headgroups of surfactants is important in the visible light-induced Cr(VI) reduction in micellar solutions.
