  • In this paper, we propose a fast encoding algorithm for scalable video encoding without compromising coding performance. Through analysis on multiple motion estimation processes performed at the enhancement layer, we show redundant motion estimations and suggest the condition under which the redundant ones can efficiently be determined without additional memory. Based on the condition, the redundant motion estimation processes are excluded in the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is faster than the conventional fast encoding method without performance degradation and additional memory.

  • In this paper, we consider the encoding scheme of low density codes. In particular, we propose the fast encoding algorithm of the low density codes using circulant permutation matrices, The fast encoding algorithm is similar to the fast Hadamard transform, and the results show that the proposed scheme is a simple and fast encoding algorithm of the low density codes.

  • In this paper, we present a fast encoding algorithm for vector quantization with an approximate Euclidean distance calculation. An approximation is performed by converting floating point to the near integer. An inequality between the approximate Euclidean distance and the nearest distance is developed to avoid unnecessary distance calculations. Since the proposed algorithm rejects those codewords that are impossible to be the nearest codeword, it produces the same output as conventional full search algorithm.

  • Vector quantization for image compression needs expensive encoding time to find the closest codeword to the input vector. This paper proposes a search algorithm for fast vector quantization encoding. Firstly, we derive a robust condition based on the efficient topological structure of the codebook to dramatically eliminate unnecessary matching operations from the search procedure. Then, we Propose a fast search algorithm using the elimination condition. Simulation results show that with little preprocessing and memory cost, the encoding time of the proposed algorithm is reduced significantly while the encoding quality remains the same with respect to the full search algorithm. It is also found that the Proposed algorithm outperforms the existing search algorithms.

  • This paper proposes an early termination method of a block vector search for fast encoding of high efficiency video coding (HEVC) screen content coding (SCC). In the proposed algorithm, two blocks indicated by two block vector predictors (BVPs) were first employed as an intra block copy (IBC) search. If the sum of absolute difference (SAD) value of the block is less than a threshold defined empirically, an IBC BV search is terminated early. The initial threshold for early termination is derived by statistical analysis and it can be modified adaptively based on a quantization parameter (QP). The proposed algorithm is evaluated on SCM-2.0 under all intra (AI) coding configurations. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces IBC BV search time by 29.23% on average while the average BD-rate loss is 0.41% under the HEVC SCC common test conditions (CTC).

  • With the development of three-dimensional display and related technologies, depth video coding becomes a new topic and attracts great attention from industries and research institutes. Because (1) the depth video is not a sequence of images for final viewing by end users but an aid for rendering, and (2) depth video is simpler than the corresponding color video, fast algorithm for depth video is necessary and possible to reduce the computational burden of the encoder. This paper proposes a fast mode decision algorithm for depth video coding based on depth segmentation. Firstly, based on depth perception, the depth video is segmented into three regions: edge, foreground and background. Then, different mode candidates are searched to decide the encoding macroblock mode. Finally, encoding time, bit rate and video quality of virtual view of the proposed algorithm are tested. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm save encoding time ranging from 82.49% to 93.21% with negligible quality degradation of rendered virtual view image and bit rate increment.

  • A problem associated with vector quantization(VQ) is the computational complexity incurred in searching for a codevector with the closet to a given input vector, where the complexity increases exponentionally with proportion to codebook size and then limits practical application. In this paper, a simple and fast, but efficient, VQ encoding algorithm is presented using a reference codevector as start codevector of premature exit condition, which eliminates distance claculation of unlikely codevectors. The algorithm is to find reference codevector having the possibility to be the nearest vector to input vector first and then to incorporate premature exit condition. The proposed algorithm needs only 10~15% of mathematical operations compared with the conventional full search VQ. Algorithm the number of additions and comparsions of the proposed algorithm is not reduced greatly, the number of multiplication is reduced up to 70~80% compared with other fast VQ encoding methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast image coding algorithm to shorten long time to take on fractal image encoding. For its Performance evaluation, the algorithm compares with other traditional fractal coding methods. In the traditional fractal image coding methods, an original image is contracted by a factor in order to make the corresponding image to be compared with. Them, the whole area of the contracted image is searched in order to find the fixed point of contractive transformation of the orignal image corresponding to the contracted image. It needs a lot of searching time on encoding However, the proposed algorithm considerable reduces encoding time by using scaling method and limited search area method. On comparison of the proposed algorithm with Joaquin's method, the proposed algorithm is at least 180 times as fast as that of Jacquin's method on encoding time with a little degradation of the decoded image quality and a little increase of the compression rate. There-for, it is found that the proposed algorithm largely improves the performance in the aspect of encoding time when compared with other fractal image coding methods.

For its performance evaluation, the algorithm compares with other traditional fractal coding methods. In the traditional fractal image coding methods, an original image is contracted by a factor in order to make an image to be matched. Then, the whole area of the contracted image is searched in order to find contractive transformation point of the original image corresponding to the contacted image. It needs a lot of searching time on encoding and remains limitation in the improvement of compression ratio. However, the proposed algorithm not only considerably reduces encoding tin e by using scaling method and limited search area method but also improves compression ratio by using bit-plane. When comparing the proposed algorithm with Jacquin's method, the proposed algorithm provides much shorter encoding time and better compression ratio with a little degradation of the decoded image quality than Jacquin's method.
