  • In this paper an effective block matching algorithm is proposed to find the motion vector. There are two approaches to the estimation of the motion vector in MCC (motion compensated coding), i.e., pel(pixel element) recursive algorithm and block matching algorithm. The search algorithm in this paper is based on the block matching method. The advantage of a proposed algorithm using integral projections is the reduction of the computation time. While the conventional block matching methods have to be computed in 2-dimensional arrays, the proposed algorithm using integral projections can be computed in 1-dimensional arrays. In comparison with conventional block matching methods, a computer simulation shows that though the prediction error increases 0.23 db, it is not detectable for human eyes and the average reduction ratio of computation time obtained from the proposed algorithm is about 3-4.

  • Motion Estimation/compensation(ME/MC) is one of the efficient interframe ceding techniques for its ability to reduce the high redundancy between successive frames of an image sequence. Calculating the blocking matching takes most of the encoding time. In this paper a new fast block matching algorithm(BMA) is developed for motion estimation and for reduction of the computation time to search motion vectors. The feature of the new algorithm comes from the center-biased checking concept and the trend of pixel movements. At first, Motion Vector(MV) is searched in ${\pm}$1 of search area and then the motion estimation is exploited in the rest block. The ASP and MSE of the proposed search algorithm show good performance.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive search range decision algorithm for fast motion estimation of video coding. Block matching algorithm for motion vector estimation that improves coding efficiency by reduction of temporal redundancy has trade-off problem between the motion vector accuracy and the complexity. The proposed algorithm playing as a pre-processing of fast motion estimation adaptively determines the motion search range by the local statistics of neighboring motion vectors. resulting in dramatic reduction of the computational cost without the loss of coding efficiency. Experimental results show the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, a modified cross search algorithm for fast block matching motion estimation is proposed. Various Motion Estimation (ME) algorithms have been proposed since ME requires large computational complexity. The proposed algorithm employs Modified Cross Search Pattern (MCSP) to search the motion vector. Efficient compression can be achieved since Modified Cross Search Algorithm (MCSA) simplifies the search pattern to reduce the computational complexity. The experimental results show that proposed algorithm reduces the search points up to 29% compared to conventional methods.

  • The motion estimation algorithm based block matching is a widely used in the international standards related to video compression, such as the MPEG series and H.26x series. Full search algorithm(FA) ones of this block matching algorithms is usually impractical because of the large number of computations required for large search region. Fast search algorithms and conventional binary block matching algorithms reduce computational complexity and data processing time but this algorithms have disadvantages that is less performance than full search algorithm. This paper presents new Boolean matching algorithm, called BCBM(Bit Converted Boolean Matching). Proposed algorithm has performance closed to the FA by Boolean only block matching that may be very efficiently implemented in hardware for real time video communication. Simulation results show that the PSNR of the proposed algorithm is about 0.08㏈ loss than FA but is about 0.96∼2.02㏈ gain than fast search algorithm and conventional Boolean matching algorithm.

  • There is the spatial correlation of the video sequence between the motion vector of current blocks. In this paper, we propose the enhanced fast block matching algorithm using the spatial correlation of the video sequence and the center-biased properly of motion vectors. The proposed algorithm determines an exact motion vector using the predicted motion vector from the adjacent macro blocks of the current frame and the Cross-Hexagonal search pattern. From the of experimental results, we can see that our proposed algorithm outperforms both the prediction search algorithm (NNS) and the fast block matching algorithm (CHS) in terms of the search speed and the coded video's quality. Using our algorithm, we can improve the search speed by up to $0.1{\sim}38%$ and also diminish the PSNR (Peak Signal Noise Ratio) by at nst $0.05{\sim}2.5dB$, thereby improving the video qualify.

  • Based on the studies on the motion vector distributions estimated on the image sequences, we proposed constrained diamond search (DS) algorithm for fast block-matching motion estimation. By considering the fact that motion vectors are searched within the 2 pixels distance in vertically and horizontally on average, we confirmed that DS algorithm achieves close performance on error ratio and requires less computation compared with new three-step search (NTSS) algorithm. Also, by applying displaced frame difference (DFD) to DS algorithm, we reduced the computational loads needed to estimate the motion vectors within the stable block that do not have motions. And we reduced the possibilities falling into the local minima in the course of estimation of motion vectors by applying DFD to DS algorithm. So, we knew that proposed constrained DS algorithm achieved enhanced results as aspects of error ratio and the number of search points to be necessary compared with conventional DS algorithm, four step search (FSS) algorithm, and block-based gradient-descent search algorithm

  • This paper is related to the fast block matching algorithm, especially a method for expanding the search pattern using the second local matching point in the adaptive hexagonal search. To reduce the local minima problem in fast motion estimation, the proposed method expands the search pattern by adding new searching points selected by using the second local matching point to conventional search pattern formed by the first local matching point in the adaptive hexagonal search. According to estimating the motion vector by applying block matching algorithm based on hexagonal search to the expanded search pattern, the proposed method can effectively carry out fast motion estimation to improve the performance in terms of compensated image quality.

  • A new fast motion estimation algorithm is presented in this paper. The algorithm, named Enhanced Cross-Diamond Search (ECDS), is based on the Diamond Search (DS) algorithm. The DS algorithm, even though faster than the most well-known algorithms, was found not to be very robust in terms of objective and subjective qualities for several sequences and the algorithm searches unnecessary candidate blocks. We propose a novel ECDS algorithm using a small cross search as the initial step, and large/small DS patterns as subsequent steps for fast block motion estimation. Experimental results show that the ECDS is much more robust, provides a faster searching speed, and smaller distortions than other popular fast block-matching algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast motion estimation algorithm which is important in performance of video encoding. Even though so many fast algorithms for motion estimation have been published due to tremendous computational amount of full search algorithm, efforts for reducing computations of motion estimation still remain. In the paper, we propose an algorithm that reduces unnecessary computations only, while keeping prediction quality the same as that of the full search. The proposed algorithm does not calculate block matching error for each candidate directly to find motion vectors but divides the calculation procedure into several steps and calculates partial sum of block errors for candidates with high priority. By doing that, we can find the minimum error point early and get the enhancement of calculation speed by reducing unnecessary computations. The proposed algorithm uses smaller computations than conventional fast search algorithms with the same prediction quality as the full search algorithm.
