  • This study analyzed the lowest production cost and the greatest profit to be obtained from marketing hogs to determine the optimal operation scale for family-owned farrow-to-finish farms. Data were collected from 39 farrow-to-finish farms with 500 to 5,000 inventories for two consecutive years, and treated with GLM and quadratic regression models using the REG procedure. Analysis results indicated that farms capable of marketing 2,933 and 3,286 hogs annually had the lowest production cost and the greatest profit, respectively. Further analysis attributed the lowest production cost or the highest return in farms with an optimal scale of 3,000 to a higher survival rate of the herd, as well as lower expenses in veterinary medicine, labor, utilities and fuel, transportation, and depreciation. A similar feed conversion efficiency was observed for all the farms studied. Obviously, the cost efficiencies were associated with the economy of the operation scale of hog production until it reached 3,000 hogs marketed annually for a family-run unit. Beyond the optimal scale of 3,000 hogs, good stockmanship was more difficult to maintain and the herd management deteriorated as increasing mortality confirms. It is conclude that, unless advanced management is applied, the operation scale should not expand beyond 3,000 hogs.

  • This study was conducted to develop pig-housings based on the forecasting models of swine production, the weather conditions, and so on in Korea. The Korean pig-housings were developed according to the following basis : 1. They should be suitable to domestic weather conditions. 2. They should be designed based on the forecasting models of swine production of farrow to finish operation among the forecasting models of swine production in Korea. 3. Proper environments should be offered to pigs according to the growth. 4. The environmental control, the treatment of swine wastewater, and so on should be interrelated. 5. Manual energy should be saved by effective arrangements of pig-housings. In the future, performance test of the Korean pig-housings and development of facility automation systems which are suitable to these should be accomplished.

  • A computationally efficient interpolation filter with a low-distortion performance is a key component to utilize the naturally-sampled pulse width modulation (NPWM) in a digital domain. To realize the efficient interpolation filter, we propose a novel design based on the recently-proposed modified Farrow filter. The proposed filter shows a better pass-band distortion performance maintaining similar degree of complexity compared with the conventional Lagrange interpolation filter. We achieve the maximum distortion deviation of 10-3 dB to 20-kHz audible frequency range and distortion reduction of 1/6 times compared with the Lagrange interpolation filter.

  • The objective of this study was to determine potential contributing factors associated with biosecurity level of farrow-to-finish pig farms and to develop a classification tree model to explore how these factors related to each other based on prediction model. To this end, the author analyzed data (n = 193) extracted from a cross-sectional study of 344 farrow-to-finish farms which was conducted between March and September 2014 aimed to explore swine disease status at farm level. Standardized questionnaires with information about basic demographical data and management practices were collected in each farm by on-site visit of trained veterinarians. For the classification of the data sets regarding biosecurity level as a dependent variable and predictor variables, Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) algorithm was applied for modeling classification tree. The statistics of misclassification risk was used to evaluate the fitness of the model in terms of prediction results. Categorical multivariate input data (40 variables) was used to construct a classification tree, and the target variable was biosecurity level dichotomized into low versus high. In general, the level of biosecurity was lower in the majority of farms studied, mainly due to the limited implementation of on-farm basic biosecurity measures aimed at controlling the potential introduction and transmission of swine diseases. The CHAID model illustrated the relative importance of significant predictors in explaining the level of biosecurity; maintenance of medical records of treatment and vaccination, use of dedicated clothing to enter the farm, installing fence surrounding the farm perimeter, and periodic monitoring of the herd using written biosecurity plan in place. The misclassification risk estimate of the prediction model was 0.145 with the standard error of 0.025, indicating that 85.5% of the cases could be classified correctly by using the decision rule based on the current tree. Although CHAID approach could provide detailed information and insight about interactions among factors associated with biosecurity level, further evaluation of potential bias intervened in the course of data collection should be included in future studies. In addition, there is still need to validate findings through the external dataset with larger sample size to improve the external validity of the current model.

  • This study was developed to evaluate the growth inhibition effects of cell wall components of Enterococcus faecalis 2B4-1 obtained from feces of neonates against tumor cell lines. Polysaccharide fraction (PS) shown sensitive growth inhibition effect in the cell wall components was isolated and characterized. In growth inhibition effects, residue fractin of whole cell was shown sensitive level of percent survival about 30% when administrated at ehe concentration of 100${\mu}$g/ml, and that was more effective than that of supernatant fraction against the tumor cell lines, SNU-1, 3LL, FARROW and HEC-1-B. Sensitive growth inhibition effects against SNU-1, FARROW and HEC-1-B were performed by whole cell (WC) fraction from Ent. faecalis 2B4-1. Cytoplasm fractin (CP) of WC was shown non-inhibition effect, however, the other part of WC, precipitate of disrupted cell (PD), was sensitive against the tumor cell line mentioned above. Followed by separation to peptidoglycan fraction (PG) and polysaccharide fraction (PS) were all sensitive which the latter was shown more sensitive percent survival than the former. Composed sugars of polysaccharide fraction were determined to D-glucose, L-rhamnose and D-glucosamine, and the rate fo composition was calculated to about 1:1:1 by the data of elemental analysis, IR, TLC and HPLC.

  • In this paper we proposed the algorithm for the implementation of network interface unit transmitter and analyzed its performance in broadband wireless local loop. The symbol rate of upstream transmitter is variable since the channel bandwidth of upstream can vary. Assuming that master clock ( $f_{DAC}$) is fixed, the cubic interpolator of Farrow structure is used to increase the sample rate to master clock rate. Simulation shows that the signal to noise ratio is about 54~55 dB and spurious signal power of upstream transmitter is less than 45 dB.B.

  • Interpolation filters are widely used in symbol timing recovery systems to interpolate new sample values at arbitrary points between the existing discrete-time samples. Polynomial interpolation is interpolated by coefficient made inputted information. This paper presents an efficient way to implement polynomial base interpolation filters using support filter changing input. By an example, it is shown that the proposed structure out performs the conventional interpolation structure with less hardware cost.
