  • In this paper, a temperature control for LED(Light Emitting Diode) lamp using a cooling fan is studied. An efficient temperature control scheme for the LED lamp using the fan wind at the lowest sound noise is studied. For the study, after measurement of the minimum sound noise of the fan and related temperature of the LED lamp through tests, experiments on temperature control of the LED lamp using the fan with various size of heat sinks was performed. To minimize the fan sound noise, optimal size of the heat sink was studied. Also, a teleoperting control of LED lamps using RF communication was studied.

  • Flow and noise analyses are conducted for examining a new design concept of impinging jet electronics cooling, and the analysis results are compared with conventional electronics cooling techniques. For the application of impinging jet electronics cooling method, the present study considers the air duct where air is supplied by axial fan and air flow from the duct is impinged vertically onto the electronic component heat source. Applying CFD simulation technique and fan noise model to the present cooling scheme, the cooling performance of the impinging jet as well as the operation condition and the noise characteristics of fan are investigated for various impinging jet nozzle conditions and fan models. Furthermore, the impinging jet electronics cooling analysis results are compared with the conventional parallel-flow cooling scheme to give the design concept and criteria of impinging jet cooling method.

  • Recently technology resulted in highly efficient and multiple-functional electric appliances considering environmental problems. One of the environmental problems is noise of a product in respect to its function. A vacuum cleaner is an essential electric appliance in our daily lives. However, severe noise resulted from high motor speed for improving the function of the appliance is a nuisance for the user. This noise is caused by vibration from various parts of the appliance and fluid noise during a series of intake and exhaust processes while rotating the impeller connected to the axle at a high speed of the fan motor inside the vacuum cleaner rotating around 30,000-35,000rpm. Despite the fact that many researchers conducted studies on reducing the noise level of the fan motor in a vacuum cleaner, only few studies have been conducted considering both the theoretical and experimental aspects using fluid analysis by measuring vibration and noise. Moreover, there has not been a study that accurately compared major noise data obtained considering both of the aspects. In this study, both aspects were considered by considering the following experimental and theoretical methods to verify the major causes of noise from the fan motor in a vacuum cleaner.

  • In recent years, a notebook like an ultrabook gets thinner. Its thickness causes problems in cooling fan performance, system installation condition, and so on. In this study, we installed a small turbofan in notebook system with very narrow gap in order to generate similar condition to a real product. Experiments were performed to measure the fan's performance and the flow and noise characteristics, its results were compared with computational ones. Prediction of P-Q curve using CFD showed under about 5% error in high flow rate and its trend was agreed with experimental one over the flow field. Experimental data to measure the noise at a distance of 100 mm from a rotation axis direction of an impeller corresponded well with computational ones of broadband and BPF noise. The noise experiments to measure at a distance of 100 mm from a rotation axis direction of an impeller corresponded well with computational ones of broadband and BPF noise. Especially, tip part of impeller blade and part of exit and bottom near in an analysis by a commercial program(FlowNoise).

  • The prediction method of the performance and aerodynamic noise from a sirocco fan was developed and compared with measured data. To predict the performance of the sirocco fan, the well-known slip coefficients and various loss models were tested and applied to forward curved sirocco impellers. Using loss models proposed for both impeller and casing, the predicted performance characteristics were in good agreement with measured ones by an ANSI test plenum. Various scaling models for aerodynamic noise from the sirocco fan were evaluated and tested against measured power levels in terms of flow coefficient. It was shown that the turbulent broadband sound power from the sirocco fan can be modeled successfully by trailing edge noise.

  • Propeller fans are commonly equipped in outdoor units of air-conditioners to provide effective cooling in a dried heat exchanger. A new design technique was developed to satisfy requirements of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance, which employs the intersection method of two cylinders for mean camber line. Three proto-types of propeller fan including Palm-Shaped, Highly-Swept(PSHS) fan (proto 3)were not only to provide low lift forces for dipole sound, but also to reduce the organized tip vortices interacting with the fan guide causing narrow-banded rotating instabilities. Cross-correlation technique was applied to study flow noise source characteristics for three proto-type fans designed. The cross-correlations between a microphone at far field and a hot-wire sensor at near field show that flows near hub region of proto 3 fan are less organized and the flow structures especially at high flow rate coefficients for proto 3 fan are less correlated with noise generated than other proto-types fans.

  • The maximum sound pressure level in a ship is restricted by the international standard such as MIL-Std. 740-1 in order to protect hearing ability for the crew on a ship. Especially, the noise of a fan system is restricted by the maximum level of the sound power according to the military specification such as MIL-F-1900A. In this paper, the reduction of tonal noise for the fan-motor system on a ship is described related to the electrical as well as structural problems. For the electrical problems, the difference of the magnetic flux caused by the variation of the air-gap is described related to the bad concentricity of the motor housing and the shaft-bearing. And for the structural problem, the resonance of the fan motor system is described.

  • It is recent trend that the manufactures of refrigerator use BLDC motor which RPM is changed by voltage of DC power, instead of induction motor in order to reduce energy consumption and noise radiation. It can be controlled two or more RPM suitable to environmental condition. For example it is operate much lower RPM than normal(usual) in the night. This paper introduce the method of noise control in the case of using BLDC Fan motor for refrigerator.
