  • In this paper, a guideline of axial flow fan design for noise reduction of refrigerators is p resented. Refrigerators have components which have a role to screen particular frequency air borne-noise which is generated by an axial flow fan set in them. Effective ways to use the particular characteristic of refrigerators are shown in this study. As a result of application of the methods, we reduced the noise of the target systems by more than 3 dB(A) from the viewpoint of air-borne noise produced by the axial flow fan set.

  • A new class of electronically commutated brushless motors, the flux-switching motor (FSM), is gradually emerging for use in power tools and household appliances especially fan and pump application thanks to green policies, This motor offers such advantages as high-power density and relatively high efficiency compare to induction motors, and low cost and simple motor structure compare to the BLDC motor. This paper presents the principle of the FSM and design of the 12/6 pole FSM drive system for fan application. Test results of the prototype motor are provided to verify the validity of the fan application with a TMS320F2812 DSP and inverter.

  • Propeller fans are commonly equipped in outdoor units of air-conditioners to provide effective cooling in a dried heat exchanger. A new design technique was developed to satisfy requirements of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance, which employs the intersection method of two cylinders for mean camber line. Three proto-types of propeller fan including Palm-Shaped, Highly-Swept(PSHS) fan (proto 3)were not only to provide low lift forces for dipole sound, but also to reduce the organized tip vortices interacting with the fan guide causing narrow-banded rotating instabilities. Cross-correlation technique was applied to study flow noise source characteristics for three proto-type fans designed. The cross-correlations between a microphone at far field and a hot-wire sensor at near field show that flows near hub region of proto 3 fan are less organized and the flow structures especially at high flow rate coefficients for proto 3 fan are less correlated with noise generated than other proto-types fans.

  • To numerically construct the sound fields by a plenum fan mostly found in Air-Handling Unit (AHU), the Kirchhoff-BEM approach was applied to the near-field data of a turbo fan. The scattering effects were found to be significant by the plenum box structure for high-frequency components of source. The directivity petterns and sound pressure levels were also dependent upon the helmholts number which must be considered of the design stage for sound reduction program.

  • This study documents the 3-phase BLDC(Brushless DC) motor to improve conventional exhaust fan motor. Energy efficiency, noise, and air pollution reduction for the high-performance vibration of the BLDC motor has been used in many fields. It is necessary to achieve the information of rotor position for driving 3-phase type brushless DC motor. It is also necessary that the PWM control algorithm design for a MOSFET driver to control the motor speed control for each of three phases. BLDC motors for exhaust fan, we studied the controller and software. The control circuit and motor control program through which Exhaust fan up close and person can be used safely and protect the environment.

  • The Sirocco fan performance and its three-dimensional flow characteristics are numerically prediction by STAR-CD. Turbulent flow computations are performed using approximately 500,000 mesh points, and the performance results of tow computational methods, transient and quasi-static flow analyses are compared with experimental data. In the present study, our attention is focused on the three-dimensional flow characteristics of the Sirocco fan blades and the secondary flow structure in the scroll. For a design optimization study, the scroll shape is titled by $10^\circ$ to modify the secondary flow structure, which yields some improvement of the fan performance.

  • In this study, the characteristics of flow in outdoor unit were numerically analyzed. Parametric studies were performed to compare the effect of bell mouth height, fan height and fan width concerned with flow rate. The result indicated that the flow rate was dependent on the bell mouth height, while it was negligibly affected by the fan height and fan width. The fan width was found to affect the velocity distribution at heat exchanger face.

  • In the present study, ventilation flow rates and pressure rises through a road tunnel are simulated numerically using CFD with the various conditions such as roughness height, swirl angle of jet fan, entrance and exit effect and hub to tip ratio. By using a modified wall function, friction factor can be predicted under 10% of error with respect to the Moody chart for the circular pipe flow and 15%, for the present tunnel. For more precise design, the effects of the swirl angle and hub to tip ratio of jet fan, which is not included in the theoretical equation of pressure rise by jet fan are necessary to be considered.
