Predicting the future number of failures based on the field failure summary data (필드 고장 요약 데이터를 활용한 미래 고장수의 예측)

  • In many companies field failure data is used to predict the future number of failures, especially when an unexpected failure mode happens to be a problem. It is because they want to predict the number of spare parts needed and the future quality warranty cost associated with the part based on the predictions of the future number of failures. In this paper field summary data is used to predict the future number of failures based on an appropriate distribution. Other types of data are also investigated to identify the appropriate distribution.

A Study on Development of Korean Failure Rate Databook (한국형 고장률 데이터 북 개발에 대한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this research is to propose procedure and methodology for developing failure rate databook which is suitable for Korean operation environment. Methods: To this end, we investigate failure databooks used in foreign countries and study the procedure and methodology for collecting failure data, organizing the data, estimating failure rate and summarizing results. Results: We develop the procedure of development of failure databook, the items for data collection, database schema of part details and part summary and contents of failure databook by considering the application environment in Korea. Conclusion: The results of our research could be utilized for the development of Korean failure rate databook and research of reliability prediction model and could ultimately contribute to improve the accuracy of reliability prediction.

Reliability analysis of warranty returns data (품질보증 반환 데이터의 신뢰성 분석)

  • A certain number of products are sold each month and some of them are returned for repair. In this study both return rate and cumulative return rate are shown on the graph to show the general trend of how many products are returned as time goes by. Next this type of summary data can be considered as a conglomeration of both left and right censored data. So reliability analysis is attempted for this type of summary data. Lastly, left censored data can be traced to find the exact time period during which the product has been claimed. In that case the left censored data can be taken as failure data. So similar type of reliability analysis is attempted for the resulting right censored data.

  • The Korean Society of Heart Failure (KSHF) Guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations based on Korean and international data to guide adequate diagnosis and management of heart failure (HF). Since introduction of 2017 edition of the guidelines, management of advanced HF has considerably improved, especially with advances in mechanical circulatory support and devices. The current guidelines addressed these improvements. In addition, we have included recently updated evidence-based recommendations regarding acute HF in these guidelines. In summary, Part IV of the KSHF Guidelines covers the appropriate diagnosis and optimized management of advanced and acute HF.

Reexamination of Failure Type in Medical Service: Recoverable and Irrecoverable Service (의료서비스 실패유형 재조명: 복구 가능과 복구 불가능 서비스)

  • Various studies have been done in medical service area but they have just focused on the examination of the relationships between cause and effect variables. This study, thus, empirically analyzed qualitative data regarding medical service problems using word cloud technique. The major results of the paper are as follows. The data reveal ten sources in medical service - forced treatment, excess inspection, misdiagnosis, carelessness, inexperienced service, waiting for emergency, reservation problem, unkindness, process problem, and inconvenience. Major words in the category of irrecoverable service failure are misdiagnosis, careless treatment, and inexperienced service whereas those in recoverable service failure are unkind attitude and negative experience in reservation system. Those who experienced a medical service problem are usually engaged in a public act and they make public protests and legal action against very severe problems. The conclusion of this study also suggests a summary, implication, and agenda of the research.

Essay on the Lessons Learned from Korean Franchisors Going International

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to find the issues associated with international expansion of Korean franchisors going international and suggest lessons of proposition to reduce the failure risk in international expansion of franchise systems. Research design, data, and methodology - This is the exploratory study and structured to review (1) background to motivate the expansion of franchisors towards international market, (2) the status of Korean franchisors going international in recent years, (3) issues, (4) lessons learned from the experiences, and (5) summary. Secondary sources were reviewed to get necessary data and statistics. Results - Master franchising was the most preferred entry mode for Korean franchisors. Franchisors must understand the expenses to be incurred as well as revenues associated with international activities. Brand is the core asset of franchisor as a differentiation strategy. Conclusions - The paper indicates that even if international franchising is the unique business model for franchisors to use in little or least risk compared with other international entry modes, it needs a set of complex capabilities that much differ from those in domestic and franchisors should take a step approach to the international market with the planned and long term perspective.

  • This paper gives a brief review of seismicity and seismic monitoring in surface mines. A summary of various researches related to seismicity is presented. Our research focuses on the understanding of seismicity and the application of analytical techniques to seismicity. Seismic monitoring plays an important role in the identification of potential failure planes and thereby predict potential failures. Much of the instrumentation used in our research is derived from earthquake monitoring systems. The major aspects in seismic monitoring are an instrumentation used, size of the network and data acquisition systems. Seismic monitoring in surface mines could be successfully applied to the improvement of safety standards in slope stability.

A case study on the Occurrence Category of aircraft accidents and serious incidents in Korea in the 2000's (2000년대 국내 항공기 사고·준사고 발생유형 사례연구)

  • Since year 2001 to the present time, the aircraft accidents and serious incidents in our country have surpassed 150 occurrences. The Boeing has published the statistical summary of commercial jet airplane accidents annually for the past 10 years on the basis of the occurrence categories defined by the CICTT(CAST/ICAO Common Taxonomy Team), and the number of occurrences is in order of loss of control(LOC-I), controlled flight into terrain(CFIT) and runway excursion (RE). Like the NTSB and the EASA, when fatal and non-fatal accidents are aggregated, though fatality rate is low, abnormal runway contact(ARC), system/component failure(SCF-PP/NP), ground handling(RAMP) rank high in the CICTT occurrence categories. With the less occurrence frequency, it is difficult to statistically analyze the aircraft accidents in our country, thus customarily the accidents and the serious incidents on aggregate are consolidated, and the statistical analysis is performed. This study categorizes the accidents and serious incidents to the domestic transportation aircraft in the past 10 years according to the CICTT occurrence categories, that is compared with foreign practices, and the implications have been discussed. From years 2001 through 2010, the accidents to the domestic transportation aircraft occurred in order of system failure(SCF-NP), ARC and power plant failure(SCF-PP), and when the accidents and the serious incidents are consolidated and analyzed, it is verified that a distribution appears similar to the European accident occurrence categories defined from 300 accident occurrence data.

  • The objectives of this paper are twofold to summarize the new findings and confirmed results from the Phebus FPT-1 experimental data and to report useful information to MELCOR users regarding the better use of MELCOR. For the core damage behavior, the early stage of a melt progression was predicted well; however, the late phase models, concerned with fuel dissolution, oxide cladding failure, fuel slumping, rubble debris heat up, effects of burn-up fuel, and so on, still showed limitations in MELCOR. For the fission product behavior, the comparison showed unexpected phenomena, various limitations, unresolved issues, and even absence of models. The issues summarized in this study have revealed the main areas where our endeavors need to be intensified in order to improve our understanding of severe accident phenomena. From the analysis of the Phebus FPT-1 test results, not only new core damage features, such as foaming or core expansion, but also possible new fission product release patterns due to effects from a high burn-up fuel have raised alternative challenging phenomena that should be solved in the next severe accident research phase.

The Impact of Organizational Context on the Performance of ERP Systems (조직적 상황이 ERP시스템의 도입 성과에 미치는 영향)

  • The ERP system comes to existence in the period of change. In other words, the ERP system is adopted to the company with BPR project. In general, the ERP system is introduced to companies as packages rather than in-housing systems. There are several researches in IS literatures which have a conclusion that organizational context affects the performance of ERP system. This study attempts to review the organizational context from the prospective of organizational structure and change management. Regarding the organizational structure, we choose some widely known variables such as the degree of formalization and centralization. For the analysis of change management, we set the variables, which are the most importantly considered, such as the power of CEO's promotion and user participation. The extent of customizing is introduced as moderating variables between the organizational context and the implementation performance. With collected data, we performed the reliability test, the factor analysis and the regression analysis. In summary, the introduction of an information system such as ERP system has a behavioral and organizational impact. The organizational change may breed resistance and opposition and can lead to the failure of the system. Therefore, implementation of the system requires careful change management, active involvement of users and high level of management support.
