복합판재의 파단 변형률 불확실성을 고려한 탄 관통 잔류속도에 대한 시험 및 수치해석 (Test and Numerical Analysis for Penetration Residual Velocity of Bullet Considering Failure Strain Uncertainty of Composite Plates)

  • 복합재는 재료 불균질성에 의해 고속 충돌 시 방호성능 자료가 산포한다. 본 연구에서는 다수의 충돌시험으로 복합판재 잔류속도 산포를 확보하고 수치해석으로 예측하는 방법을 정립하였다. 먼저 10개의 동일 시편으로 인장시험을 수행하여 파단변형률 산포를 얻었다. 같은 재료로 제작된 4ply([0/90]s)와 8ply([0/90/0/90]s) GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) 복합판재에 FSP(Fragment Simulating Projectile) 고속 충돌시험을 동일 조건에서 다수 수행하여 잔류속도 산포를 얻었다. 인장시험에서 얻어진 파단 변형률 분포를 이용하여 수치해석을 수행하였다. 충돌속도는 4ply와 8ply 각각 411.7m/s와 592.5m/s이다. 시험 결과와 비교하여 적절한 잔류속도의 산포를 예측할 수 있었다. 추가적으로 복합판재의 경우 Solid요소 대비 Layered Solid요소로 모델링하면 계산시간이 감소되었다.

Numerical simulation of the effect of bedding layer geometrical properties on the punch shear test using PFC3D

  • In this research the effect of bedding layer angle and bedding layer thickness on the shear failure mechanism of concrete has been investigated using PFC3D. For this purpose, firstly calibration of PFC3d was performed using Brazilian tensile strength. Secondly punch shear test was performed on the bedding layer. Thickness of layers were 5 mm, 10 mm and 20 mm. in each thickness layer, layer angles changes from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ with increment of $25^{\circ}$. Totally 15 model were simulated and tested by loading rate of 0.016 mm/s. The results show that when layer angle is less than $50^{\circ}$, tensile cracks initiates between the layers and propagate till coalesce with model boundary. Its trace is too high. With increasing the layer angle, less layer mobilizes in failure process. Also, the failure trace is very short. It's to be note that number of cracks decrease with increasing the layer thickness. The minimum shear punch test strength was occurred when layer angle is more than $50^{\circ}$. The maximum value occurred in $0^{\circ}$. Also, the shear punch test tensile strength was increased by increasing the layer thickness.

Simulation of crack initiation and propagation in three point bending test using PFC2D

  • Three points bending flexural test was modelled numerically to study the crack propagation in the pre-cracked beams. The pre-existing double internal cracks inside the beam models were considered to investigate the crack propagation and coalescence paths within the modelled samples. Notch configuration effects on the failure stress were considered too. This numerical analysis shown that the propagation of wing cracks emanating from the tips of the pre-existing internal cracks caused the final breaking of beams specimens. It was also shown that when two notches were overlapped, they both mobilized in the failure process and the failure stress was decreased when the notches were located in centre line. However, the failure stress was increased by increasing the bridge area angle. Finally, it was shown that in all cases, there were good agreements between the discrete element method results and, the other numerical and experimental results. In this research, it is tried to improve the understanding of the crack propagation and crack coalescence phenomena in brittle materials which is of paramount importance in the stability analyses of rock and concrete structures, such as the underground openings, rock slopes and tunnel construction.

Mechanical properties and failure mechanism of gravelly soils in large scale direct shear test using DEM

  • Gravelly soil is a kind of special geotechnical material, which is widely used in the subgrade engineering of railway, highway and airport. Its mechanical properties are very complex, and will greatly influence the stability of subgrade engineering. To investigate the mechanical properties and failure mechanism of gravelly soils, this paper introduced and verified a new discrete element method (DEM) of gravelly soils in large scale direct shear test, which considers the actual shape and broken characteristics of gravels. Then, the stress and strain characteristics, particle interaction, particle contact force, crack development and energy conversion in gravelly soils during the shear process were analyzed using this method. Moreover, the effects of gravel content (GC) on the mechanical properties and failure characteristics were discussed. The results reveal that as GC increases, the shear stress becomes more fluctuating, the peak shear stress increases, the volumetric strain tends to dilate, the average particle contact force increases, the cumulative number of cracks increases, and the shear failure plane becomes coarser. Higher GC will change the friction angle with a trend of "stability", "increase", and "stability". Differently, it affects the cohesion with a law of "increase", "stability" and "increase".

  • This paper utilizes 3D FEM to provide deeper insights about the structural behaviour of a 6.1 m span steel culvert, which was previously tested under extreme loading. The effect of different input parameters pertaining to the backfill soil has been investigated, where the structural response is compared to field measurements. The interface choice between the steel and soil materials was also studied. The results enabled to realize the major influence of the friction angle on the load effects. Moreover, the analyses showed some differences concerning the estimation of failure load, whereas reasons beyond this outcome were arguably presented and discussed.

  • This paper proposes a combined plastic and creep constitutive model of A533B1 pressure vessel steel to simulate progressive deformation of nuclear pressure vessels under severe accident conditions. To develop the model, recent tensile test data covering a wide range of temperatures (from RT to 1,100 ℃) and strain rates (from 0.001%/s to 1.0%/s) was used. Comparison with experimental data confirms that the proposed combined plastic and creep model can well reflect effects of temperature and strain rate on tensile behaviour up to failure. In the companion paper (Part II), the proposed model will be used to simulate OECD lower head failure (OLHF) test data.

모형시험과 개별요소법을 이용한 단면 형상에 따른 공동 주변 취성파괴에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Stress Induced Brittle Failure around Openings with Cross-sectional Shape by Scaled Model Test and DEM Simulation)

  • 불연속면의 빈도가 높지 않은 견고한 암반의 경우 굴착시 공동 주변 영역에서의 파괴나 변형 특성은 형성되어 있는 초기응력 조건과 강도 특성에 절대적인 영향을 받는다. 과도한 초기응력장은 굴착 공동 주변에 점진적이고 국부적인 취성파괴를 유발시킴으로서 시공의 안정성과 경제성을 확보하는데 장애요인으로 작용할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 응력 수준과 터널형상에 따른 공동 주변의 취성파괴 거동 특성을 파악하기 위해 축소된 터널 시험체를 이용한 이축압축시험과 입자 결합모델을 이용한 개별요소법의 일종인 $PFC^{2D}$ 해석에 의한 연구를 수행하였다. 실내 이축압축시험을 통해 취성파괴의 발생 영역과 형태 면에서 실제 암반 공동 주변에서 발생된 파괴 특성과 유사한 파괴 거동을 모사할 수 있었다. 모형시험체에 대한 이축압축시험 결과 최소 주응력 방향의 공동 단면 곡선부에서는 균열이 표면에서 개시된 후 내부로 진행되어 국부적인 노치형 파괴영역이 형성되었다. 이에 비해 모서리와 직선부의 경우 공벽 표면과 내부에서 발생된 균열들의 상호 연결, 결합에 의해 대규모의 노치형 분리면이 유도되고 곡선부에 비해 큰 파괴영역이 형성되는 것으로 조사되었다.

  • 암반 내 형성된 과도한 초기응력장은 굴착 공동 주변에 점진적이고 국부적인 취성파괴를 유발시킴으로서 시공의 안정성과 경제성을 확보하는데 장애 요인으로 작용할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 응력 수준 증가에 따른 공동 주변의 취성파괴 거동 특성을 파악하기 위해 축소된 원형 터널 공시체를 이용한 이축압축시험과 입자 결합 모델을 이용하여 개별요소법의 일종인 $PFC^{2D}$ 해석에 의한 연구를 수행하였다. 실내 이축압축시험을 통해 취성파괴의 발생 영역과 형태 면에서 실제 암반 공동 주변에서 발생된 파괴 특성과 유사한 파괴 거동을 모사할 수 있었다. 응력 강도비 증가에 따라 진행된 균열 발전단계를 미소파괴음 특성 변수들에 대한 상세 분석을 통해 평가하였다. $PFC^{2D}$ 해석을 통해 공동 주변에서의 미세 균열 발생과 전파 과정을 성공적으로 가시화하였으며 이를 통해 이축 압축시험 결과의 신뢰성과 시험방법의 적정성을 확인할 수 있었다.

Effects of number and angle of T Shape non persistent cracks on the failure behavior of samples under UCS test

  • Experimental and numerical simulation were used to investigate the effects of angle and number of T shape non-persistent crack on the shear behaviour of crack's bridge area under uniaxial compressive test. concrete samples with dimension of 150 mm×150 mm×40 mm were prepared. Within the specimen, T shape non-persistent notches were provided. 16 different configuration systems were prepared for T shape non-persistent crack based on two and three cracks. In these configurations, the length of cracks were taken as 4 cm and 2 cm based on the cracks configuration systems. The angle of larger crack related to horizontal axis was 0°, 30°, 60° and 90°. Similar to cracks configuration systems in the experimental tests, 28 models with different T shape non-persistent crack angle were prepared in numerical model. The length of cracks were taken as 4 cm and 2 cm based on the cracks configuration systems. The angle of larger crack related to horizontal axis was 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°. Tensile strength of concrete was 1 MPa. The axial load was applied to the model. Displacement loading rate was controlled to 0.005 mm/s. Results indicated that the failure process was significantly controled by the T shape non-persistent crack angle and crack number. The compressive strengths of the specimens were related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. Furthermore, it was shown that the compressive behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of the induced tensile cracks which are increased by increasing the crack number and crack angle. The strength of samples decreased by increasing the crack number. In addition, the failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both methods i.e. the experimental testing and the numerical simulation methods (PFC2D).

The NF-l6D VISTA Simulation System

  • Called VISTA (Variable-stability In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft), the one-of-a-kind NF-l6D has a simulation system that can mimic several aircraft. Though housed in an F-l6 Fighting Falcon airframe, VISTA can also act like the F-15 Eagle or the Navy's F-14 Tomcat. More importantly, such flexibility allows for improved training and consolidation of some sorties. Consequently USAF Test Pilot School students will have an opportunity to learn how to test future integrated cockpits. In this paper we will use the multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) and the multiple model adaptive controller (MMAC) techniques to model the aircraft's flight control system containing the longitudinal and lateral-directional axes. Single and dual actuator and sensor failures will also be included in the simulation. White Gaussian noise will be included to simulate the effects of atmospheric disturbances.
