  • Pulmonary hypertension is an increase in blood pressure in the pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein or pulmonary capillaries. Depending on the cause, pulmonary hypertension can be a severe disease with markedly decreased exercise tolerance and right-sided heart failure. Pulmonary hypertension can present as one of five different types: arterial, venous, hypoxic, thromboembolic, or miscellaneous. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with severe pulmonary hypertension is a rare disease. A 52-year-old man presented with a complaint of aggravating dyspnea. The mean pulmonary arterial pressure was 61.5 mmHg by Doppler echocardiogram. The patient was prescribed diuretics, digoxin, bronchodilator, sildenafil, bosentan and an oxygen supply. However, he ultimately died of cor pulmonale. Thus, diagnosis and early combination therapy are important.

The effect of materials properties on the reliability of hydraulic turbine runners

  • The failure of hydraulic turbine runners is a rare event. So in order to assess the reliability of these components one cannot rely solely on the number of observed failures in a given population. However, as there is a limited number of degradation mechanisms involved, it is possible to use physically-based reliability models. Such models are often more complicated but are able to account for physical parameters in the degradation process. They can therefore help provide solutions to improve reliability. With such models, the effect of materials properties on runner reliability can be highlighted. This paper presents a brief review of the Kitagawa-Takahashi diagram which links the damage tolerance approach, based on fracture mechanics, to the stress or strain-life approaches. Using simplified response spectra based on runner stress measurements, we will show how fatigue reliability is sensitive to materials fatigue properties, namely fatigue crack propagation behaviour and fatigue limit obtained on S-N curves. Furthermore, we will review the influence of the main microstructural features observed in 13%Cr-4%Ni stainless steels commonly used for runner manufacturing. The goal is ultimately to identify the most influential microstructural features and to quantify their effect on fatigue reliability of runners.

  • Current maintenance operations and integrity checks on a wide array of structures require personnel entry into normally-inaccessible or hazardous areas to perform necessary nondestructive inspections. To gain access for these inspections, structure must be disassembled and removed or personnel must be transported to remote locations. The use of in-situ sensors, coupled with remote interrogation, can be employed to overcome a myriad of inspection impediments stemming from accessibility limitations, complex geometries, the location and depth of hidden damage, and the isolated location of the structure. Furthermore, prevention of unexpected flaw growth and structural failure could be improved if on-board health monitoring systems were used to more regularly assess structural integrity. A research program has been completed to develop and validate Comparative Vacuum Monitoring (CVM) Sensors for surface crack detection. Statistical methods using one-sided tolerance intervals were employed to derive Probability of Detection (POD) levels for a wide array of application scenarios. Multi-year field tests were also conducted to study the deployment and long-term operation of CVM sensors on aircraft. This paper presents the quantitative crack detection capabilities of the CVM sensor, its performance in actual flight environments, and the prospects for structural health monitoring applications on aircraft and other civil structures.

  • This paper describes the failure mechanism and Charpy impact test of Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic composites which it was actually used for side plate of vessel. There are two examinations. The examination I, the specimens which it given temperature range $-25^{\circ}C$-$50^{\circ}C$ and with different initial notch length did impact test and then it compared impact energy(Uc) and impact fracture toughness(GIC). The examination II, the specimens which it putted into fresh water and sea water for scheduled hours did impact test and it compared impact energy(Uc) and impact fracture toughness(GIC). From examination I, it showed that impact energy(Uc) and impact fracture toughness(GIC) were peak at ambient temperature and decrease as temperature reduced. Fracture toughness(GIC) showed increase as initial notch length reduced. From examination II, impact energy(Uc) and impact fracture toughness(GIC) tended to increase which specimens putted in fresh water compared with sea water and maximum tolerance rate tend to decrease as permeation hours will be long.

  • 본 논문에서는 빅 데이터 처리를 위한 플랫폼인 하둡이 가지고 있는 분산 노드 관리 기법의 문제점을 분석하고 하둡 분산 파일시스템에서 노드 관리를 유연하게 처리하기 위한 기법을 제안한다. 기존의 방법은 클러스터에 포함된 노드가 일시적으로 연결되지 않는 경우 이를 즉시 고장으로 판정함으로 인해 클러스터를 동적으로 구성하지는 못하는 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 지연된 블록 복제 기법은 연결이 끊어진 노드가 추후 클러스터에 쉽게 편입될 수 있도록 노드의 제거를 최대한 지연함으로써 노드 관리의 유연성을 제공한다. 실험을 통해 제안하는 기법이 클러스터의 규모가 변화하는 환경에서 분산 처리 성능에 영향을 거의 미치지 않으면서도 노드 관리의 유연성을 증대시키는 것을 입증한다.

Role of endometrial immune cells in implantation

  • Implantation of an embryo occurs during the mid-secretory phase of the menstrual cycle, known as the "implantation window." During this implantation period, there are significant morphologic and functional changes in the endometrium, which is followed by decidualization. Many immune cells, such as dendritic and natural killer (NK) cells, increase in number in this period and early pregnancy. Recent works have revealed that antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and NK cells are involved in vascular remodeling of spiral arteries in the decidua and lack of APCs leads to failure of pregnancy. Paternal and fetal antigens may play a role in the induction of immune tolerance during pregnancy. A balance between effectors (i.e., innate immunity and helper T [Th] 1 and Th17 immunity) and regulators (Th2 cells, regulatory T cells, etc.) is essential for establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. The highly complicated endocrine-immune network works in decidualization of the endometrium and at the fetomaternal interface. We will discuss the role of immune cells in the implantation period and during early pregnancy.

  • NPC 인버터는 많은 수의 전력용 반도체 소자로 구성되어 있으므로 다른 고장의 유형보다 전력용 반도체 스위치의 고장 발생 가능성이 더욱 크다. 고장발생시에 시스템의 연속적인 운전을 위한 대책의 개발은 매우 필요하며, 이러한 고장은 제안된 방법을 이용함으로써 시스템의 고장 허용 능력을 향상할 수 있다. 제안된 방법은 하나의 전력용 반도체 고장발생시 고장난 전력용 반도체가 포함된 고장상을 직렬 연결된 커패시터의 접속점에 연결한 후 나머지 두상을 이용하여 제어함으로써 직류-링크 전압을 유지하고, 일정한 크기를 가지는 출력 부하상전류를 연속적으로 시스템에 공급할 수 있다. 제안된 방법은 몇가지 특별한 분야에서 값비싼 다른 대안책들보다 더 경제적인 대안이다.

  • 인터넷 기반 시스템에서는 고가용도와 고성능을 제공해야하며, 클러스터 시스템 기술은 이에 대한 하나의 해결책으로 떠오르고 있다. 클러스터 시스템을 사용하는 중요한 목적은 성능과 가용도의 확보에 있으며, 고가용도 클러스터 시스템은 구성 노드들 중 일부에 결함이 발생했을 때 이를 비용ㆍ효율적으로 해결한다. 본 논문은 (n,k) 클러스터 시스템의 성능을 고려한 가용도 개선과 손실비용 분석에 관한 연구로 소프트웨어 재활 기법을 적용한 (n,k) 클러스터 시스템의 가용도 모델을 제안하였으며, 고가용도가 요청되는 시스템에서 소프트웨어 재활은 가용도 향상을 가져오는 유용한 기법 중의 하나임을 파악하였다.

High-Temperature Rupture of 5083-Al Alloy under Multiaxial Stress States

  • High-temperature rupture behavior of 5083-Al alloy was tested for failure at 548K under multiaxial stress conditions: uniaxial tension using smooth bar specimens, biaxial shearing using double shear bar specimens, and triaxial tension using notched bar specimens. Rupture times were compared for uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial stress conditions with respect to the maximum principal stress, the von Mises effective stress, and the principal facet stress. The results indicate that the von Mises effective and principal facet stresses give good correlation for the material investigated, and these parameters can predict creep life data under the multiaxial stress states with the rupture data obtained from specimens under the uniaxial stress. The results suggest that the creep rupture of this alloy under the testing condition is controlled by cavitation coupled with highly localized deformation process, such as grain boundary sliding. It is also conceivable that strain softening controls the highly localized deformation modes which result in cavitation damage in controlling rupture time of this alloy.

A Workflow Scheduling Technique Using Genetic Algorithm in Spot Instance-Based Cloud

  • Cloud computing is a computing paradigm in which users can rent computing resources from service providers according to their requirements. A spot instance in cloud computing helps a user to obtain resources at a lower cost. However, a crucial weakness of spot instances is that the resources can be unreliable anytime due to the fluctuation of instance prices, resulting in increasing the failure time of users' job. In this paper, we propose a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based workflow scheduling scheme that can find the optimal task size of each instance in a spot instance-based cloud computing environment without increasing users' budgets. Our scheme reduces total task execution time even if an out-of-bid situation occurs in an instance. The simulation results, based on a before-and-after GA comparison, reveal that our scheme achieves performance improvements in terms of reducing the task execution time on average by 7.06%. Additionally, the cost in our scheme is similar to that when GA is not applied. Therefore, our scheme can achieve better performance than the existing scheme, by optimizing the task size allocated to each available instance throughout the evolutionary process of GA.
