  • Contaminant retardation factor is derived from the colloidal and contaminant transport equations for a four-phase porous medium: an aqueous phase, two mobile colloidal phases, and a solid matrix. It is assumed that the contaminant sorption to solid matrix and colloidal particles and the colloidal deposition on solid matrix follow the linear isotherms. The behavior of the contaminant retardation factor in response to the change of model parameters is examined employing the experimental data of Magee et al. (1991) and Jenkins and Lion (1993). In the four-phase system, the contaminant retardation factor is determined by both the contaminant association with solid matrix and colloidal particles and the colloidal deposition on solid matrix. The contaminant mobility is enhanced when the affinity of contaminants to mobile colloids increases. In addition, as the affinity of colloids to solid matrix decreases, the contaminant mobility increases.

  • Performance enhancement of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is investigated in a device structure of ITO/TPD/Alq3/LiF/Al and ITO/TPD/Alq3/BCP/LiF/Al. Here, bathocuproine (BCP) is used as an electron-transport layer. Current density-voltage-luminance characteristics of the OLEDs show that the performance of the device is better with BCP layer than without BCP layer. The current density, luminance, luminous efficiency, and external-quantum efficiency are improved by approximately 22%, 50%, 2%, and 18%, respectively. Since the BCP layer lowers the electron energy barrier, electron transport is facilitated and the movement of hole is blocked as the applied voltage increases. This results in an increased recombination rate of holes and electrons.

  • Facilitated transport of lipophilic benzo(a)pyrene into human fibroblast cells by low density lipoproteins (LDL) was examined. Amounts of [3H]-labeled B(a)P taken up by the Hep 2 fibroblast was increased 3 folds by the addition of LDL (100ng of protein/105 cells) in the media. However, we have found that the facilitated B(a)P transport into cells were diminished by the addition of LDL of which the apoproteins were modified by copper(II) ion-catalyzed oxidation in 10nM copper sulfate. The results of the present study suggest that lipophilic compounds are taken up via adsorptive endocytosis which is mediated by interactions between apoproteins on LDL.

  • Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption equilibrium, the adsorption kinetics and facilitated transport of two cationic dyes (Methylene Blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RB)) on Polymer Inclusion Membrane (D2EHPA-PIM). Different adsorption isotherms (Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin models) as well as kinetics models indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic. Under the optimal conditions, the adsorption removal efficiencies reach about 93% and 97% for MB and RB respectively. Different extraction values by D2EHPA-PIM were obtained for the two cationic dyes: MB is weakly extracted at pH 2.0 (E% = 18.7%) whilst E% = 82.4% was observed for RB at the same pH. This difference was exploited in a mixture containg both the 2 cationic dyes for the selective extraction of RB at pH 2. Desorption of both dyes was achieved from the membrane by using acidic aqueous solutions and desorption ratio up to 90% was obtained. The formulas of the extracted complexes by the PIMs were, determined by the method of slopes. The dyes transport was elucidated using mass transfer analysis where in it found relatively high values of the initial flux ($J_0$) as 41.57 and $18.74{\mu}mol.m^2.s^{-1}$ for MB and RB respectively.

  • This study is aimed to separate propylene and propane using membrane process instead of NCC(Naphtha Cracking Center) $C_3$ splitter. Membrane process is a low energy consumption and eco-friendly process while $C_3$ splitter requires high energy consumption in petrochemical processes. In this study, high performance facilitated transport membrane (FTM) is used for propylene/propane separation. FTM module was prepared on top of porous polyetherimide hollow fiber using PVP/$AgBF_4$/TCNQ. We developed simulation program predicting the membrane separation properties under operation conditions. Separation properties of FTM module for propylene and propane were obtained from the simulation program based on the pure gas permeation data. Based on these results, it is predicted that an one-stage membrane process provides 99.5% of propylene at permeate side from a binary gas mixture of 95/5 vol% $C_3H_6$ / vol% $C_3H_8$ supplied as a feed gas.

  • Facilitated transport is one of the possible solutions to simultaneously improve permeability and selectivity, which is challenging in conventional polymer-based membranes. Olefin/paraffin separation using facilitated transport membrane has received much attention as an alternative solution to the conventional distillation process. Herein, we report olefin separation composite membranes based on the polymer blends containing $AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3$ mixed salts. Free radical polymerization process was used to synthesize an amphiphilic graft copolymer of poly(dimethyl siloxane)-graft- poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PDMS-g-POEM). In addition, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was introduced to the PDMS-g-POEM graft copolymer to form polymer blends with various ratios. The propylene/propane mixed-gas selectivity and permeance reached up to 5.6 and 10.05 GPU, respectively, when the PEO loading was 70 wt% in polymer blend. The improvement of olefin separation performance was attributed to the olefin facilitating silver ions as well as the highly permeable blend matrix. The stabilization of silver ions in the composite membrane was achieved through the introduction of $Al(NO_3)_3$ which suppressed the reduction of silver ions to silver particles.

  • A theoretical study is made of the steady flow of a compressible fluid in a rapidly rotating finite cylinder. Flow is generated by imposing mechanical and/or thermal disturbances at the rotating endwall disks. Both the Ekman and Rossby numbers are small. A detailed consideration is given to the energy budget for a control volume in the Ekman boundary layer. A combination of physical variables, which is termed the energy contents, consisting of temperature and modified angular momentum, emerges to be relevant. The distinguishing features of a compressible fluid, in contrast to those of an incompressible fluid, are noted. For the Taylor-Proudman column to be sustained, in the interior, it is shown that the net energy transport between the solid disk wall and the interior fluid should vanish. Physical rationalizations are facilitated by resorting to the concept of the afore-stated energy content.
