  • When high-speed interrupted cutting is carried out for die and mold steels with high hardness, CBN tools manifested a significantly longer wear life than carbide, ceramic, or cermet tools in an experiment of face milling characteristics. In addition, it was also found that they secured a stable surface roughness within a range of 1.6 S~6.3 S, an acceptable range for precision machining for polished machining parts. And it makes them acceptable in the precision machining field, except in industries where very high machining accuracy is required. In the high hardness interrupted cutting, it was advantageous to perform a negaland treatment and a honning treatment on the tools' cutting edge to extend tool life and surface roughness. Also, severe crater development was found on the sloped face in CBN tools following high-speed machining. This caused the cutting edge to be weakened and damaged, and ultimately resulted in a shorter tool life. Finally, as a result of EDX mapping inspection, Cr component was detected evenly on the entire crater wear area, which can be included only in STD 11.

  • The Part of slot on rotary compressor which plays an important part of the reliability and performance is studied on machinability and the wear characteristics for the specimen made by sand mold and permanent mold. The experiment are used the face cutter of milling machine which make the processing surface like broaching process and rollblock wear test machine. Permanent-mold casting iron is not affected by variation of RPM of milling machine, but sand-mold cast-iron is improved to increasing RPM. Also sand-mold casting iron shows superior wear characteristic to permanent-mold casting iron. This results from harder matrix of pearlite structure and self-lubrication characteristics of graphite. And wear particles in tested oil show shape and size similar to severe wear particles of oil taken from rotary compressor. The material and surface condition of slot play important part of the reliability and performance.

  • This paper presents a method to identify the on-set of chatter by using the chatter frequency-spindle speed diagram for a milling spindle-workpiece system in face milling process. To this purpose, the eigenvalue problem approach using frequency response function is adopted for predicting both the chatter condition and chatter frequency. The chatter frequency -spindle speed diagram for various conditions is investigated throughout simulation and experiment to diagnose the chatter. The simulation and experimental results show that the chatter frequency-spindle speed diagram is useful for diagnosis of the on-set of chatter vibration.

  • One of the most important processes is the face milling in processing task. It makes the smooth surface of processed goods. In processing stage, the formation of burr is inevitable. The formed burr decreases a detailed drawing and effects the safety of workers. So, it causes a deburring process for removing and a bottle-neck condition. Therefore, the study which can minimize the generation of burr is needed. In this paper, complex feature, such as line, arc, circle, spline is studied more reality than any other papers. And also, the algorithm which can predict the path of generated burr is established. Moreover, the finality goal is that the system which can produce tool-path minimized has to be developed.

  • A milling process with 45 degree chamfered inserts produces a perfect flat surface only in theory. It is due to many unwanted factors including thermal effect, dynamic effect, the problem of the controller used and the problem of accuracy of the machine tool. In this study, introduced is a method to improve the surface roughness by redesigning of the chamfer angle of the insert, which traditionally has been 45 degree. First, the relationship between the fixed machine coordinate and the relative coordinate on the insert is derived. This transfer matrix is used to determine the new insert angle to maximize the flatness of the machined surface. A newly designed insert is manufactured, and used to carry out the experiment. It is proved that the insert designed by the proposed method produced a much flatter surface than a traditional one.

  • Burrs formed during face milling operations can be very difficult to characterize since there exist several parameters which have complex combined effects that affect the cutting process. Many researchers have attempted to predict burr characteristics including burr size and shape, using various experimental parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate, in-plane exit angle, and number of inserts. However, the results of these studies tend to be limited to a specific process parameter range and to certain materials. In this paper, the Taguchi method, a systematic optimization method for design and analysis of experiments, is introduced to acquire optimum cutting conditions for burr minimization. In addition, an in process monitoring scheme using an artificial neural network is presented for the prediction of burr types.

  • A diagnosis system which can monitor tool breakage and chipping in real time was developed using a DSP(Digital Signal Processor) board in face milling operation. AR modelling and band energy method were used to extract the feature of tool states from cutting force signals. Artificial neural network embedded on DSP board discriminates different patterns from features got after signal processing. The features extracted from AR modelling are more accurate for the malfunction of a process than those from band energy method, even though the computing speed of the former is slow. From the processed features, we can construct the real time diagnosis system which monitors malfunction by using a DSP board having a parallel processing capability.

  • This paper presents an indirect cutting force measuring system, which uses the current signals from the AC servo drive units of the horizontal machining center, with its applications to the adaptive regulation of the cutting forces in various milling processes and to the on-line monitoring of tool breakage. A typical model for the feed-drive control system of a horizontal machining center is developed to analyze cutting force measurement from the drive motor. The pulsating milling forces can be measured indirectly within the bandwidth of the current feedback control loop of the feed-drive system. It is shown that the indirectly measured cutting force signals can be used in the adaptive controller for cutting force regulation. The whole scheme has been embedded in the commercial machining center and a series of cutting experiments on the face cutting processes are performed. The adaptive controller reveals reliable cutting force regulating capability against the various cutting conditions. It is also shown that the tool breakage in milling can be detected within one spindle revolution by adaptively filtering the current signals. The effect of the cutter run-out has been considered for the reliable on-line detection of tool breakage.

  • In this study, the characteristics of the surface around a hole on inlet and outlet of product which are manufactured by face mill or end mill cutting with a hole or a pocket in its surface, are investigated. Furthermore, experiment for optimization of process conditions to minimize the change of characteristics of milling cut surface after a hole cutting operation, is implemented. Applying the results in this study to surface manufacturing of mold products whose surface is uneven or metal products made by diecasting, reducing the number of sequence process to obtain fine surface is expected.
