  • Integrating 3D data acquired in multiple views is one of the most important techniques in 3D modeling. However, the existing integration methods are sensitive to registration errors and surface scanning noise. In this paper, we propose a integration algorithm using the local surface topology. We first find all boundary vertex pairs satisfying a prescribed geometric condition in the areas between neighboring surfaces, and then separates areas to several regions by using boundary vertex pairs. We next compute best fitting planes suitable to each regions through PCA(Principal Component Analysis). They are used to produce triangles that be inserted into empty areas between neighboring surfaces. Since each regions between neighboring surfaces can be integrated by using local surface topology, a proposed method is robust to registration errors and surface scanning noise. We also propose a method integrating of textures by using parameterization technique. We first transforms integrated surface into initial viewpoints of each surfaces. We then project each textures to transformed integrated surface. They will be then assigned into parameter domain for integrated surface and be integrated according to the seaming lines for surfaces. Experimental results show that the proposed method is efficient to face modeling.

  • The Yongjam of Oejae, Yi Dan-ha's wife, is an ornamental hairpin with a dragon-shaped engraving; designated as National Folklore Cultural Heritage No. 4. It is also a component of the ceremonial costume, and an artifact of great value as it clearly identifies the position of the wearer and the period of this artifact. The Yongjam has been well preserved in general; however, various pollutants and corrosive products have affected the engraved patterns, requiring conservation treatment. Furthermore, a non-destructive analysis was conducted to identify the components of the materials and the manufacturing techniques used in the ornament. The Yongjam is hollow inside to reduce its weight when placed in the hair and has a color contrast of gold, red, and black. The decorative part and the body were made separately. That is, the body was made from an alloy of copper, silver, and zinc, and its joint was elaborately connected without any overlaps. In the decorative part, different alloy ratios were identified in the dragon's face, beard, horn, body, and fin. Further, for the dragon's face with its delicate patterns, an alloy of silver and copper was used, likely to make the face appear as realistic as possible.

  • This paper suggests a method to recognize facial expressions of animation characters by means of dominant colors and feature points. The proposed method defines a simplified mesh model adequate for the animation character and detects its face and facial components by using dominant colors. It also extracts edge-based feature points for each facial component. It then classifies the feature points into corresponding AUs(action units) through neural network, and finally recognizes character facial expressions with the suggested AU specification. Experimental results show that the suggested method can recognize facial expressions of animation characters reliably.

  • Genetic variability is an important component in the ability of populations to adapt in the face of environmental change. Severe human impacts reduced Muzzafarnagri sheep of India from 500,000 in 1972 to 10,989 in 1973-74. Here we report for the first time the effect of this population decline on levels of genetic variability at 13 FAO recommended ovine microsatellite loci and contrast levels of variability to that in a breed from the same geographical region, which differed in numbers, by an order of magnitude (Marwari sheep). Of the 13 loci, 100% were polymorphic in both breeds. A high degree of genetic variation was observed within populations in terms of both allele diversity (number of alleles per locus, >4) and gene diversity (expected heterozygosity, >0.5), which implied that there is still a substantial amount of genetic diversity at the nuclear loci in a declining population. Nevertheless, overall low number of alleles per locus and relatively less abundance of low frequency alleles in Muzzafarnagri sheep suggested that genetic variability has been comparatively reduced in this population. Bottleneck analysis indicated that a genetic bottleneck did not occur during the most recent decline. In addition, we found that the differentiation among populations was moderate ($F_{ST}$= 11.8%). This study on assessment of genetic effects of the population declines in ovines is a step towards identification of genetically impoverished or healthy populations, which could prove to be a useful tool to facilitate conservation planning in this important species of small ruminants.

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop and test validity and reliability of on instrument for predicting nursing intention for SARS patient care. Method: The psychometric properties of a SARS patient care attrition prediction tool, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, were examined in this study. The Three-phase design involved a) salient beliefs generated from clinical nurses (n=43) b) content validation by expert panel evaluations(n=5) c) face validation by plot testing (n=10) d) and instrument validation in a cross sectional survey (n=299). Psychometric analysis of survey data provided empirical evidence of the construct validity and reliability of the instrument. Result: Principal component analysis verified the hypothesized 6-factor solution, explaining $68.2\%$ of variance, and Alpha coefficients of .7538 to .9389 indicated a high internal consistency of the instrument. Conclusion: The instrument can be used by nurse administrators and researcher to assess clinical nurses' salient beliefs about caring for SARS patients, guide tailored intervention strategies to effective caring, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.

  • This paper proposes a new glasses removal method from color frontal facial image to generate gray glassless facial image. The proposed method is based on recursive PCA reconstruction. For the generation of glassless images, the occluded region by glasses should be found, and a good reconstructed image to compensate with should be obtained. The recursive PCA reconstruction Provides us with both of them simultaneously, and finally produces glassless facial images. This paper shows the effectiveness of the proposed method by some experimental results. We believe that this method can be applied to removing other type of occlusion than the glasses with some modification and enhancing the performance of a face recognition system.

  • Steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich composite structure with corrugated-strip connectors (CSC) has the potential to be used in buildings and offshore structures. In this structure, CSCs are used to bond steel face plates and concrete. To overcome executive problems, in the proposed system by the authors, shear connectors are one end welded as double skin composites. Hence, this system double skin with corrugated-strip connectors (DSCS) is named. In this paper, finite element model (FEM) of push-out test was presented for the basic component of DSCS. ABAQUS/Explicit solver in ABAQUS was used due to the geometrical complexity of the model, especially in the interaction of the shear connectors with concrete. In order that the explicit analysis has a quasi-static behavior with a proper approximation, the kinetic energy (ALLKE) did not exceed 5% to 10% of the internal energy (ALLIE) using mass-scaling. The FE analysis (FEA) was validated against those from the push-out tests in the previous work of the authors published in this journal. By comparing load-slip curves and failure modes, FEMs with suitable analysis speed were consistent with test results.

  • A cylindrical capacitance-type spindle displacement sensor was developed and its effectiveness as a system to monitor cutting forces during hard turning was tested in this research. The sensor was installed between the face of spindle cover and the chucking element and measured pure radial motion of the spindle under the condition with presence of roundness error at measured surface. To prove the effectiveness of the developed system hard aiming tests using ceramic inserts and tool steel as workpiece were conducted. The workpiece was hardened up to 65 Rc. The variations of pure radial motion of the spindle ware measured during the cutting tests. The signals from the sensor showed the same pattern of cutting force variations from the tool dynamometer due to the progress of tool wear. As the flank wear of the ceramic tool increased both static component of cutting forces and the amount of center shift of spindle orbit increased, Results from the research showed that the developed sensor could be utilized as an effective and cheap on-line sensing device to monitor cutting conditions and tool performance in the un-manned machining center.

  • A critical component of air pollution modeling is the representation of atmospheric flow fields within a model domain, since an accurate air quality simulation requires an accurate portrayal of the three-dimensional wind fields. The present study investigated data assimilation using surface observational data in the complex coastal regions to simulate a realistic atmospheric flow fields. Surface observational data were categorized into three groups (Near coastal region, Far coastal region 1, Far costal region 2) by the locations where the sites are. Experiments were designed according to the location of observational stations and MM5/CALPUFF was used. The results of numerical simulation of atmospheric flow fields are used as input data for CALPUFF which predicts dispersion fields of air pollutants. The result of this study indicated that data assimilation using data in the far coastal region 2 provided an attractive method for generating realistic meteorological fields and dispersion fields of air pollutants in Gwangyang area because data in the near coastal region are variable and narrow representation.
