Varieties of research on turbulent-induced noise is conducted with combinations of acoustic analogy methods and computational fluid dynamic methods to analyze efficiently and accurately. Application of FW-H acoustic analogy without turbulent noise is the most popular method due to its calculation cost. In this paper, turbulent-induced noise is predicted using RANS turbulence model and permeable FW-H method. For simplicity, noise from 2D cylinder is examined using three different methods, direct method of RANS, FW-H method without turbulent noise and permeable FW-H method which can take into account of turbulent-induced noise. Turbulent noise was well predicted using permeable FW-H method with same computational cost of original FW-H method. Also, ability of permeable FW-H method to predict highly accurate turbulent-induced noise by applying adequate permeable surface is presented. The procedure to predict turbulent-induced noise using permeable FW-H is established and its usability is shown.
In most industry fields concerning external flow noise problems, the hybrid computational aeroacoustic techniques based on the FW-H (Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings) equation are widely used for its numerical efficiency. However, when the surface integral form of FW-H equation is used without volume quadrupole sources, it is known to generate significant non-physical noise in a certain case. Especially, in the case of a flow in which the tip vortex cavitation is formed in the distant downstream direction such as flow driven by an underwater propeller, the accuracy in noise prediction becomes poor unless it is not properly modelled. Therefore, in this study, the nonphysical acoustic waves caused by the surface integral form of FW-H equation is reduced by adding the quadrupole correction term. First, to verify the accuracy of the in-house code of FW-H equation, the noise by an axial fan used in the outdoor unit of air conditioner was calculated and compared with the results of ANSYS Fluent. In order to verify the effects of the quadrupole correction term, the noise prediction for isentropic vortex convection is performed and it is confirmed that the error is reduced by the quadrupole correction term. Finally, the noise prediction is performed for the flow field generated by the Clark-Y hydrofoil in underwater. It is confirmed that the error caused by the cavitation passing through the integral surface can be reduced by the quadrupole correction term.
InThe purpose of this work is to analyze the flow characteristics and aerodynamic noise generated from a shroud fan at a constant 2,100 rpm using LES and FW-H noise model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Velocity distributions around the shroud fan obtained by using FLUENT code show good agreement with experimental results. The sound pressure level is decreased by about 6 dB as the distance from the fan increases twice. The directivity at 1st BPF shows a tendency of increasing SPL toward the axis of rotation.

With the increase in the speed of ships and the size of ocean structures, the importance of flow noise has become increasingly critical in meeting regulatory standards. However, unlike active investigations in aeroacoustics fields for airplanes and trains, which are based on acoustic analogy methods for tonal and broadband frequency noise, only the discrete blade passing frequency noise from propellers is considered in marine fields. In this study, prediction methods for broadband noise in marine propellers and underwater appendages are investigated using FW-H Formulation1B, which can consider the mechanism of primary noise generation of trailing edge noise. The original FW-H Formulation 1B is based on the pressure correlation function tolackitsgeneralityandaccuracy. To overcome these limitations, wall-pressure spectrum models are adopted to improve the generality in fluid mediums. The comparison of the experimental results obtained in air reveals that the proposed model exhibits a higher accuracy within 5 dB. Furthermore, the prediction procedures for broadband noise for hydrofoils are established, and the estimation of broadband noise is conducted based on the results of the computational fluid dynamics.

According to analyses of high-resolution seismic profiles (air gun, sparker, and SBP) and a deep-drill core(YSDP 105) in the mid-eastern Yellow Sea, stratigraphic and geoacoustic models have been established and seismo-acoustic modeling has been fulfilled using ray tracing of finite element method. Stratigraphic model reflects seismo-, litho-, and chrono-stratigraphic sequences formed under a significant influence of Quaternary glacio-eustatic sea-level fluctuations. Each sequence consists of terrestrial to very-shallow-marine coarse-grained lowstand systems tract and tidal fine-grained transgressive to highstand systems tract. Based on mean grain-size data (121 samples) of the drill core, bulk density and P-wave velocity of depositional units have been inferred and extrapolated down to a depth of the recovery using the Hamilton's regression equations. As goo-acoustic parameters, the 121 pairs of bulk density and P-wave velocity have been averaged on each unit of the stratigraphic model. As a result of computer ray-tracing simulation of the subsurface strata, we have found that there are complex ray paths and many acoustic-shadow zones owing to the presence of irregular layer boundaries and low-velocity layers.

Underwater noise radiated from submarines is directly related to the probability of being detected by the sonar of an enemy vessel. Therefore, minimizing the noise of a submarine is essential for improving survival outcomes. For modern submarines, as the speed and size of a submarine increase and noise reduction technology is developed, interest in flow noise around the hull has been increasing. In this study, a noise analysis technique was developed to predict flow noise generated around a submarine shape considering the free surface effect. When a submarine is operated near a free surface, turbulence-induced noise due to the turbulence of the flow and bubble noise from breaking waves arise. First, to analyze the flow around a submarine, VOF-based incompressible two-phase flow analysis was performed to derive flow field data and the shape of the free surface around the submarine. Turbulence-induced noise was analyzed by applying permeable FW-H, which is an acoustic analogy technique. Bubble noise was derived through a noise model for breaking waves based on the turbulent kinetic energy distribution results obtained from the CFD results. The analysis method developed was verified by comparison with experimental results for a submarine model measured in a Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT).
As a basic study of the aero-acoustic noise, Large eddy simulations were carried out for a fixed circular cylinder at Renolds number (Re=$9.0\times10^4$) using commercial CFD code, FLUENT. The subgrid-scale turbulent viscosity was modeled by Smagorinsky-Lilly model adapted to structured meshes. The results of analysis showed that time-averaged value, $\bar{C}_D$ is approximately 1.47 which is considerably adjacent with the experimentally measured value of 1.32 in comparison to the values performed by previous researchers. It is observed that there are the very small acoustic pressure fluctuation with the same frequency of the Karman vortex street.
In this study, the noise contributions by the duct, stator and rotor, which are the propulsor components, are evaluated to identify the flow noise source in cavitation and non-cavitation conditions on pumpjet propulsion and the noise levels in both conditions are compared. The unsteady incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation based on the homogeneous mixture assumption is applied on the suboff submarine hull and pumpjet propeller in the cavitation tunnel, and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method and Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model are used to describe the two-phase flow. Based on the flow simulation results, the acoustic analogy formulated by Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) equation is applied to predict the underwater radiated noise. The noise contributions are evaluated by using the three types of impermeable integral surface on the duct, stator and rotor, and the two types of permeable integral surface surrounding the propulsor. As a result of noise prediction, the contribution by the stator is insignificant, but it affects the generation of flow noise source due to flow separation in the duct and rotor, and the noise is predominantly radiated into the upward and right where the flow separations are. Also, the noise is radiated into the thrust direction due to pressure fluctuation between suction and pressure sides on the rotor blades, and the it can be seen that the cavitation effect into the noise can be considered through the permeable integral surface.

Axial-flow fans are used to transport fluids in relatively low-pressure flow regimes, and a variety of design variables are employed. The tip geometry of an axial fan plays a dominant role in its flow and noise performance, and two of the most prominent flow phenomena are the tip vortex and the tip leakage vortex that occur at the tip of the blade. Various studies have been conducted to control these three-dimensional flow structures, and winglet geometries have been developed in the aircraft field to suppress wingtip vortices and increase efficiency. In this study, a numerical and experimental study was conducted to analyze the effect of winglet geometry applied to an axial fan blade for an air conditioner outdoor unit. The unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation and the FfocwsWilliams and Hawkings (FW-H) equation were numerically solved based on computational fluid dynamics techniques to analyze the three-dimensional flow structure and flow noise numerically, and the validity of the numerical method was verified by comparison with experimental results. The differences in the formation of tip vortex and tip leakage vortex depending on the winglet geometry were compared through a three-dimensional flow field, and the resulting aerodynamic performance was quantitatively compared. In addition, the effect of winglet geometry on flow noise was evaluated by numerically simulating noise based on the predicted flow field. A prototype of the target fan model was built, and flow and noise experiments were conducted to evaluate the actual performance quantitatively.
The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of various turbulence models on the aerodynamic noise of an air-conditioner (AC) indoor unit. The results from URANS (unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations with the standard k-$\varepsilon$, k-$\omega$ shear stress transport (SST) and Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) turbulence models were analyzed and compared with the noise data from the experiments. The frequency spectra of the far-field acoustic pressure were computed using the Farrasat equation derived from the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation based on the acoustic analogy model. Two fixed fan casings and the rotating cross-flow fan were used as the source surfaces of the dipole noise in the Farrasat equation. The result with the standard k-$\epsilon$ model showed a much better agreement with the experimental data compared to the k-w SST and S-A models. The differences in the pressure spectra from the different turbulence models were discussed based on the instantaneous vorticity fields. It was found that the over-estimated power spectra with the k-w SST and S-A models are related to the emphasized small-scale vortices produced with these models.
