A Semiotic Approach to Korean Ceremonial Dress -Focusing on Wedding Dress in Choson Dynasty (한국의례복식의 기호학적 분석(1) -조선시대 혼례복식을 중심으로-)

  • This article aims, by analyzing structurally the codification of dress sign in Korean society, the signifying system of the codes and their message communicated, to make clear a signifying structure that would be codified through the relationship between abstract concepts and real condition of dress. I used the semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure′s conception on structuralismly the codification, cultural semiology of Roland Barthes and Myung-Sook Han′s formula of dress structure as tools analyse may objective of wedding dress of folks in Choson Dynasty, which has been successive our traditional Korean wedding dress. My results of the study are : The procedure of wedding ceremony in Choson Dynasty was presented in texts like Juga-garye, Sarye-peonram and Kukjo-orye, its dress system has been more emphasized on language, and aspect of social system, than parole, one of individual realization. In addition, the meanings of marrage such as "Oneness of bride and bridegroom", "Mixture of two sexes", "Blessing of good luck", were included in the signified like the style, pattern and color of the wedding dress, and specially, pattern and color, the articulated morphemes, was emphasized, When we combinated terms of dress in Choson Dynasty with syntagmatic, regarding their list as paradigmatic, it will signify a wedding dress, and according to combinating ways, it amy be divided as sign of dresses of bride and bridgeroom by sex or king, gentry and common people by class.   • The effect of alkaline pre-treatment on the solubilization of waste activated sludge(WAS) was investigated, and the biodegradability of WAS, pretreated WAS, [PWAS], food waste and two types of mixture were estimated by biochemical methane potential [BMP] test at $35^{\circ}C$. The biodegradability of PWAS and mixture waste were significantly improved due to the effect of alkaline hydrolysis of WAS. An alkaline pre-treatment was identified to be one of the useful pre-treatment for improving biodegradability of WAS and mixture waste. In high-rate anaerobic co-digestion system coordinate with an alkaline pre-treatment in process, the digesters were operated at the HRT of 5, 7, 10 and 13 days with a mixture of FW $50\%\;and\;PWAS\;50\%,\;$In term of $CH_4$ content, VS removal and specific methane production [SMP] which are the parameters in the performance of digester, the optimum operating condition was found to be a HRT of 7 days and a OLR of 4.20g/L-day with the highest SMP of 0.340 L $CH_4/g$ VS.

Assessment of toxic metals in vegetables with the health implications in Bangladesh

  • This study was conducted to investigate the levels of heavy metals in twelve species of vegetables and assessment of health risk. Samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The ranges of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb in vegetables species were 0.37-5.4, 0.03-17, 0.35-45, 0.01-2.6, 0.001-2.2, and 0.04-8.8 [mg/kg, fresh weight (fw)], respectively. The concentrations of As, Cd and Pb in most vegetable species exceeded the maximum permissible levels, indicating unsafe for human consumption. Health risks associated with the intake of these metals were evaluated in terms of estimated daily intake (EDI), and carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks by target hazard quotient (THQ). Total THQ of the studied metals from most of the vegetables species were higher than 1, indicated that these types of vegetables might pose health risk due to metal exposure. The target carcinogenic risk (TR) for As ranged from 0.03 to 0.48 and 0.0004 to 0.025 for Pb which were higher than the USEPA acceptable risk limit (0.000001) indicating that the inhabitants consuming these vegetables are exposed to As and Pb with a lifetime cancer risk. The findings of this study reveal the health risks associated with the consumption of heavy metals through the intake of selected vegetables in adult population of Bangladesh.

  • Forty four specimens (22.5-34.2 cm ML) of Heterololigo bleekeri were collected around Dokdo, East Sea on March 1, 2012. It was identified as H. bleekeri based on the following combination of morphological character: mantle very elongate; fin large, thick, length two-thirds of mantle length; arms very short and small in relation to body size, are formula III>II>IV>I.

  • Modern clothes are part of formative arts and express experimentation and originality. This tendency is especially prominent in structural fashion. This study set out to analyze structural fashion in various aspects, examining and analyzing the expressive and formative characteristics of Deformation and contribute to the development of creative fashion design. The approach of peer debriefing was used with three fashion experts to identify structural clothes in the women's haute couture collections from a total of 24 seasons from S/S of 2008 to F/W of 2019. The clothes with Deformation characteristics were then identified to analyze expressive and formative characteristics. The expressive characteristics of Deformation in structural clothes were exaggeration, distortion, and recombination. Exaggeration was expressed with exaggerated sizes, forms, and excessive use. Distortion was expressed with distorted forms and functions and through optical illusions. Recombination was expressed with the recombination of forms and roles. The formative characteristics of Deformation were maximum, playfulness, and unfamiliarity. The study connected the expressive characteristics to the formative ones and examined them simultaneously, finding that "distortion" and "playfulness" represented the expressive and formative characteristics, respectively. The characteristics of Deformation are expressed in various ways in structural fashion. If they are considered, they will make valuable contributions to creative ideas.

Characteristic of Resistance to Tracking and Mechanical Strength by Silica type of Cycloaliphatic-Bisphenol Blending Epoxy (싸이클로알리파틱과 비스페놀 계열 혼합 에폭시 수지의 실리카 종류에 따른 내트래킹 특성 및 기계적 강도)

  • Cycloaliphatic Epoxy와 Bisphenol Epoxy를 각각 mol-wt%비 (80:20, 50:50, 20:80)로 혼합하고 Epoxy Silaned Silica, 바ed Silica, Spherical Silica, ATH(Aluminum Trihydrate)를 충진하여 내트래킹 특성 및 인장강도, 충격강도 등의 기계적 강도를 비교하였다. Cycloaliphatic 수지는 Huntsman사(社)의 CY5622, Bisphenol 수지는 Hexion사(社)E의 Epikote2200을 사용하였으며, Silaned Silica 및 Fused Silica는 Quatzwerke사(社)의 W12, FW12를 사용하였다. 전체 혼합물 중, 에폭시는 약 36%, 실리카는 약 34~540%, ATH는 약 10~30% 이다. 실험결과, ATH 함량이 높은 조성 및 Epoxy Silaned Silica를 사용한 조성과 Cycloaliphatic 혼합비율이 높은 조성이 우수한 내트래킹 특성을 보였다. 또한, Silica의 함량이 증가할수록 기계적 강도가 증가하였으며, Silaned Silica를 사용하였을 때 가장 우수한 특성을 나타내었다. 본 실험의 결과를 통해 옥외용 내트래킹 특성 규격인 IEC60587 4.5kV/6h를 만족하는 조성에 대해 가늠이 가능하였고, 각 조성에 따른 기계적 강도의 확인이 가능하였다.

Effects of Antidiabetic and GLUT4 gene Expression of Acanthopanax senticosus Extracts (가시오가피 추출물의 항당뇨 활성 및 GLUT4 유전자 발현에 미치는 영향)

  • Antidiabetic effects of an aqueous and solvent extract prepared from the root, stem and fruit parts of Acanthopanax senticosus, were investigated in experimental Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats model. The n-butanol and water extracts of A. senticosus were orally administrated once a day for 6 days. The n-butanol extracts of fruit (FB) showed highest efficiency than other groups (water extracts of stem, root and fruit; butanol extracts of stem, root) on serum glucose values in the STZ-induced diabetic rats. We have studied gene expression of glucose transporter genes in C2C12 skeletal muscle cell line during differentiation treated by the n-butanol and water extracts of A. senticosus, SW, RW, FW, SB, RB and FB. The GLUT4 gene was high expressed by FB treatment. These findings suggest that FB of A. senticosus have GLUT4 gene expression activity for glucose homeostasis and may have beneficial effects on blood glucose lowering in the diabetic patients.

Structural and Functional Stability of the Genetic Recombinant Plasmid pCU103 in Different Water Environments

  • The stability of the genetically engineered microorganisms and their recombinant plasmids released in natural environments has been regarded as one of the molecular ecological topics. In this study, the recombinant plasmids pCU103 in which the pcbCD genes involved in biodegradation of biphenyl and 4-chlorobiphenyl were cloned in pBluescript SK(+) vector, were examined for their structural and functional stability in different waters at 15 $^{\circ}C$ by the methods of electrophoresis, Southern hybridization, quantification with fluorescent dye, and transformation. The recombinant plamids maintained their stabilities for about 30 days in sterilized distilled water (SDW), 15 days in autoclaved creek water (AW), 25 days in filtered and autoclaved non-sterile creek water (FAW), 4 days in Luria-Bertani (LB) broth, and less than one day in filtered non-sterile creek water (FW). The covalently closed circular (CCC) form of the plasmid was decreased and open circular (OC) form was increased as a function of incubation time, and then linear (L) form was produced to be ultimately degraded out. The degradation rates of the plasmid were proportionally correlated to trophic level of the water, and the biological factor such as DNases was found to be one of the most critical factors affecting structural and functional stability of the plasmid in non-sterile natural water.

  • Essential oil extracted by solvent, n-pantane and diethyl ether for 2 hours was 0.1∼0.5% in Wasabia japonica Mastum. and it was showed the highest content in root and the lowest content in petiole. Allylisothiocyanate detected by gas chromatography contained in all of the plant part in wasabi. Its content in rhizome was 0.687∼1.339mg /g FW showing the highest content in rhizome. Allylisothiocyanate content was varied from culture site, variety and position of rhizome in wasabi.
