  • In recent years, the use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites to repair or strengthen existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures is increasing In order to evaluate the shear strengths of RC structures strengthened by FRP composites, it is needed to understand the shear failure modes of these structures. This paper presents a rational equation to distinguish the shear fail modes of RC structures strengthened by FRP composites using the compatibility aided truss models.

  • This study evaluates the concrete shear strength for normal and high strength concrete beams reinforced with 3 type FRP bars (CFRP, GFRP, HFRP). Experimental results obtained from twenty-four simply supported concrete beams are compared with values predicted by FRP shear strength expressions proposed in the various literatures, including the ACI Committee 318 and ACI Committee440. The shear strength correction factors are proposed through the regression analysis.

  • As confining materials for concrete, steel and fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have important applications in both the seismic retrofit of existing reinforced concrete columns and in the new construction of composite structures. We present a comprehensive review of the axial stress-strain behaviour of the FRP-confined concrete column. Next, the mechanical performance of the hybrid FRP-confined concrete-steel composite columns are comprehensively reviewed. Furthermore, the results of FRP-confined concrete column experiments and FRP-confined circular concrete-filled steel tube experiments are presented to study the interaction relationship between various material sections. Finally, the combinations of material sections are discussed. Based on these observations, recommendations regarding future research directions for composite columns are also outlined.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the reinforced concrete beam using strengthening materials (embedded FRP rod, metal fittings) in existing reinforced concrete buildings. Seven reinforced concrete beams comprised of retrofitted embedded FRP rod (BCR series), embedded FRP rod with metal fittings (BCR-AC series), and standard specimen (BSS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Design parameters of test specimens were amount of embedded FRP rod and metal fittings. The test results showed that the maximum load carrying capacity of specimens with embedded FRP rod (BCR series) and embedded FRP rod with metal fittings (BCR-AC series) increased by 21~55% and 21~63%, respectively, in comparison with the standard specimen BSS. BCR series test specimens failed by the adhesion slip and concrete cover separation. BCR-AC series test specimens failed by the adhesion slip due to the confining effect of metal fittings.

  • For giving self-diagnosing capability, a method based on monitoring the changes in the electrical resistance of hybrid FRP reinforced concrete has been tested. Then after examining change in the value of electrical resistance of carbon fiber in CFRP, CFGFRP, CFAFRP and e.t.c., before and after the occurrence of cracks and fracture in hybrid FRP reinforced concrete at each flexural weight-stage, the correlations of each factors were analyzed. As the results, it is clarified that when the carbon fiber tows fracture, the electrical resistance of it increase largely, and afterwards hybrid FRP composites can be resist the load due to the presence of the reinforced fiber, for example, glass fiber or aramid fiber tows.

  • This is a part of the extensive ongoing investigation being carried out by author to develop appropriate design procedure of the concrete member reinforced with FRP rebars instead of conventional steel rebars. This study presents the experimental results of a research programme to assess the structural characteristics of spliced rebar in reinforced concrete members with FRP reinforcement. The test variables are the diameter of FRP rebar and the embedment length. The development length (ld) was calculated according to the ACI 440 for FRP rebars in concrete. A total of 14 concrete beams reinforced with spliced FRP rebars and 4 reference beams reinforced with non-spliced FRP rebars were tested. The effects of bar size (10, 13, 16 and 19 mm) and splice length (from 0.72 to 1.58ld) on the bond strength were empirically evaluated. The test results indicate that a modification factor of 1.3 and 1.6 is relatively sufficient for the bond development length of glass FRP rebars in order to achieve an adequate tension lap splice length.

  • Reinforced concrete structures have been used for a long time. However, corrosion problem in reinforcing steel is inevitable, which results in the degradation of performance and the shortening of the life of structures. To overcome such problems, FRP(Fiber Reinforced Polymer) rebars have been developed. Due to their corrosion resistance and their superior mechanical properties, FRP rebars are increasingly applied to concrete structures in other countries. To obtain the composite action between FRP rebars and concrete, sufficient bond between two materials must be secured. But, the behavior of FRP rebars is different from that of steel rebars. Therefore, it is necessary to understand and develop the proper bond mechanism of FRP rebars to use them in concrete structures. This paper presents analytical results to investigate the bond-slip relationship between FRP rebars and concrete based on pull out tests.

  • In this study, analytical investigations on the flexural behavior of FRP reinforced concrete slab were discussed. In the derivation of analytic solution, the FRP reinforced concrete slab was modeled as a structural orthotropic plate. To determine the flexural rigidities of an orthotropic plate model, the elastic equivalence method was employed. In the finite element analysis, the approximate method to determine the rigidity matrix of orthotropic plate element was also suggested using the elastic equivalence method. The results obtained by the analytical solution and the finite element analysis were compared with that of experiment.

  • This study presents the nonlinear finite element analysis to predict the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams shear-strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer laminates (FRP). In this paper, modeling concept for the FRP is introduced to enable the use of finite element methods for the shear analysis of RC beams shear-strengthened with FRP composites. The numerical techniques are used to represent the FRP composite, bond properties between the FRP and the concrete, and the RC beams. According to the proposed modeling methods, a finite element analysis is performed using a two-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis program, VecTor2, based on the Disturbed Stress Field Model (DSFM). To verify the application of the DSFM for the prediction of the behavior of the shear-critical beams strengthened with FRP composites in shear, a detailed comparison between experimental and numerical results for the response of the RC beams is carried out.

  • This paper investigates the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with externally bonded fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) sheets is investigated in this work. FRP is attractive for strengthening the RC beams due to its good tensile strength, low weight, resistance to corrosion, and easy applicability. A simple and direct analytical procedure for evaluating the ultimate flexural capacity of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete (SRC) beams is presented using the equilibrium equations and compatibility of strains. Upper and lower limits of FRP sheet area to ensure the ductile behavior are established. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of design variables such as sheet area, sheet stiffness and strength, concrete compression strength, and steel reinforcement ratio. The analytical procedure is compared with results of experimental data available in the literature.
