  • In this study, in order to observe the behaviors of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthened and steel fiber reinforced concrete specimens for impact and static loads, flexural and punching tests were performed. For the one-way flexural and two-way punching tests, concrete specimens with the dimensions of $50{\times}100{\times}350$ mm and $50{\times}350{\times}350$ mm were fabricated, respectively. The steel fiber reinforced concrete specimens showed much enhanced resistance on two-way punching of static and impact loads. In addition the FRP strengthening system provided the outstanding performance under a punching load. Because of a large tensile strength and toughness of ultra high performance concrete (UHPC), the UHPC specimens retrofitted with FRP showed marginally enhanced strength and energy dissipating capacity.

  • In order to develop an effecive seismic strengthening metghod for existing concrete structure, structural tests of aramid FRP reinforced RC columns are performed. The test variables were strengthening methods of aramid sheet and strip. The test results were evaluated by comparing strength and energy dissipation capacities of non-reinforced and reinforced specimens. The test result comparison showed that aramid sheet reinforcement on RC column was evaluated as the most efficient way to increase strength and energy dissipation capacity.

  • Using combinations of carbon and glass fiber composites normally used for strengthening of concrete structures, the hybrid effect from strengthening concrete structures using the composite is studied. To produce the hybrid effects, the specimens were made with optimum proportions of carbon fibers with glass fibers. Then, direct tensile tests were conducted on the hybrid FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) specimens. Unlike the woven fiber sheet currently used in construction sites, the FRP specimens have to be directly combined with the fibers, which make the work very complicated. Therefore, direct tensile test specimens manufacturing method based on the combination of high-tension carbon fibers and E-type glass fibers was proposed and the effects of hybridization is studied through the direct tensile test. By comparing the ductility index, the modulus of elasticity, and the stress-strain curves of the specimens, the most optimum glass to carbon fiber combination ratio for the hybrid FRP was found to be 9 to 1 with ductile K-type epoxy. The study results are discussed in detail in the paper.

  • For giving self-diagnosing capability, a method based on monitoring the changes in the electrical resistance of carbon materials in strengthened concrete has been tested. Then after examining change in the value of electrical resistance of carbon materials used as a rib of CFGFRP or a sheet of carbon fiber before and after the occurrence of cracks and fracture in hybrid FRP or carbon fiber sheet strengthened concrete at each flexural weight-stage, the correlations of each factors were analyzed.

  • Columns are one of the most critical parts of a structural system subjected to earthquake excitations. In this regard, extensive experimental studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapping on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. Among them, many studies focused on the behavior of circular or square RC columns strengthened with CFRP or GFRP sheets. Since the cross-sectional shape affects confinement by FRP wrapping, its strengthening effect and final damage pattern may differ with shapes. In this study, a series of cyclic tests was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of rectangular reinforced concrete columns strengthened with basalt-based fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) sheets and composite fiber panels. The result shows that the effect of strengthening is not significant, and it implies a little increase of confinement by BFRP sheets and composite fiber panels, which is considered partly due to the cross-sectional shape of the columns.

  • This paper investigates the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with externally bonded fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) sheets is investigated in this work. FRP is attractive for strengthening the RC beams due to its good tensile strength, low weight, resistance to corrosion, and easy applicability. A simple and direct analytical procedure for evaluating the ultimate flexural capacity of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete (SRC) beams is presented using the equilibrium equations and compatibility of strains. Upper and lower limits of FRP sheet area to ensure the ductile behavior are established. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of design variables such as sheet area, sheet stiffness and strength, concrete compression strength, and steel reinforcement ratio. The analytical procedure is compared with results of experimental data available in the literature.

  • The objective of this study is to assess the strengthening effects of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) sheets such as Carbon fiber, Glass fiber, and PET(polyethylene terephthalate) on reinforced concrete flexural members. Variables of theoretical analysis are types of strengthening materials, material properties and amount of strengthening materials. A virtual flexural member without FRP sheets was created as a control specimen to understand the structural behavior of the non-strengthened specimen in terms of elastic and ultimate cross section. In total, 11 specimens including one non-strengthened and ten strengthened specimens were investigated. Various variables such as types of strengthening, strengthening properties, and amount of strengthening were studied to compare the behavior of the control specimen with those of strengthened specimens with regard to moment-curvature relationship. Results of theoretical analysis showed that the moment capacity of strengthened specimens was superior to that of the control specimen. However, the control specimen indicated the best ductility among all the specimens. As the amount of strengthening increased, flexural performance was improved. Furthermore, the results indicated that the ductile effect of members was affected by the ultimate strain of FRP sheets. The strengthening effect on the damaged member was similar to that on the non-damaged one since there was less than 10% difference in terms of flexural strength and ductility. Therefore, even if a damaged member is treated as non-damaged for analysis there is probably no noticeable difference.

  • In this study, a structural performance of R/C columns controlled by shear, strengthened with Sprayed FRP, was investigated. For this purpose, six 2/3-scaled column specimens were designed and tested by the pseudo-static reversed cyclic load under a constant axial load, which is 10% of the nominal axial strength of the column. Four specimens were strengthened by Sprayed FRP with different combinations of short fibers (carbon or glass) and resins (epoxy or vinyl ester). For comparison purpose, tests of a specimen strengthened with carbon fiber sheet (CFS) and a control specimen without strengthening were carried out, respectively. The result reveals that shear strengths and ductility capacities of columns strengthened with Sprayed FRP improved remarkably, compared to those of the control column, and the Sprayed FRP technique developed in this study is able to use the strengthening scheme of existing R/C columns.
