This paper presents the design and fabrication model of a touchpad based on a contact-resistance-type force sensor. The touchpad works as a touch input device, which can sense contact location and contact force simultaneously. The touchpad is 40 mm wide and 40 mm long. The touchpad is fabricated by using a simple screen printing technique. The contact location is evaluated by the calibration setup, which has a load cell and three-axis stages. The location error is approximately 4 mm with respect to x-axis and y-axis directions. The force response of the fabricated touchpad is obtained at three points by loading and unloading of the probe. The touchpad can detect loads from 0 N to 2 N. The touchpad shows a hysteresis error rate of about 11% and uniformity error rate of about 3%.

In order to measure the real contact force between head and disk on hard disk drive quantitatively, many technique of measurement have been developed. Acoustic Emission Sensor can be used for detect elastic energy of head/disk contact as arms value. In this study using pencil breaking test is proposed for finding contact force using transfer function between calibrated force and real contact force. And real AE data of subambient and tripad slider shows bending and torsional mode and their energy are dominant in hard disk and head contact.
The nanoscale sensing and manipulation have become a challenging issue in micro/nano-robotic applications. In particular, a feedback sensor-based manipulation is necessary for realizing an efficient and reliable handling of particles under uncertain environment in a micro/nano scale. This paper presents a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever for nanoscale force measurement in micro robotics. A piezoresistive MEMS cantilever enables sensing of gripping and contact forces in nanonewton resolution by measuring changes in the stress-induced electrical resistances. The calibration of a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever is experimentally carried out. In addition, as part of the work on nanomanipulation with a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever, the analysis on the interaction forces between a tip and a material, and the associated manipulation strategies are investigated. Experiments and simulations show that a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever integrated into a micro robotic system can be effectively used in nanoscale force measurements and a sensor-based manipulation.

Micro force measurement is required more frequently for a precision manufacturing and investment in fields of precision industries such as semiconductor, chemistry and biology, and so forth. Null balance method has been introduced as an alternative of a loadcell. Loadcells have advantages in aspects of low cost and easy manufacturing, but have also the limitation in resolution and sensitivity to environment variations. In this paper, null balance method is explained and the dominant parameters related to system performances are mentioned. Null position sensor, electromagnetic system and controller are investigated. Also, the characteristic experiment is carried out in order to estimate the resolution and the measurement range. In order to overcome the limitation by the drift of position sensor and the performance of controller, double electromagnetic force compensation method is proposed and experimented. After controlling and filtering, the resolution under $\pm$ 1mg and measurement range over 300g could be obtained.
This study has been motivated to examine the performance of a wireless sensor system under the typhoons as well as to analyze the effect of the typhoons on the bridge's vibration responses and the variation of cable forces. During the long-term field experiment on a real cable-stayed bridge in years 2011-2012, the bridge had experienced two consecutive typhoons, Bolaven and Tembin, and the wireless sensor system had recorded data of wind speeds and vibration responses from a few survived sensor nodes. In this paper, the wireless structural health monitoring of stay cables under the two consecutive typhoons is presented. Firstly, the wireless monitoring system for cable-stayed bridge is described. Multi-scale vibration sensor nodes are utilized to measure both acceleration and PZT dynamic strain from stay cables. Also, cable forces are estimated by a tension force monitoring software based on vibration properties. Secondly, the cable-stayed bridge with the wireless monitoring system is described and its wireless monitoring capacities for deck and cables are evaluated. Finally, the structural health monitoring of stay cables under the attack of the two typhoons is described. Wind-induced deck vibration, cable vibration and cable force variation are examined based on the field measurements in the cable-stayed bridge under the two consecutive typhoons.
A readout circuit for a tactile sensor pad based on force sensing resistors was proposed, which was composed of an analog signal conditioning circuit and a digital circuit with a microcontroller. The conventional signal conditioning circuit has a dc offset voltage in the output signal, which results from the reference voltage applied to the FSR devices. The offset voltage reduces the dynamic range of the circuit and makes it difficult to operate the circuit under a low voltage power supply. In the proposed signal conditioning circuit, the dc offset voltage was removed completely. The microcontroller with A/D converter and D/A converter was used to enlarge the measurement range of pressure. For this, the microcontroller adjusts the FSR reference voltage according to the resistance magnitude of FSR under pressure. The operation of the proposed readout circuit which was connected to a tactile sensor pad with $5{\times}10$ FSR array was verified experimentally. The experimental results show the proposed readout circuit has the wider measurement range of pressure than the conventional circuit. The proposed circuit is suitable for low voltage and low power applications.
Chamferless peg-in-hole process of the cylindrical type parts using force/torque sensor and vision sensor is analyzed and simulated in this paper. Peg-in-hole process is classified to the normal mode (only position error) and tilted mode(position and orientation error). The tilted mode is sub-classified to the small and the big tilted mode according to the relative orientation error. Since the big tilted node happened very rare, most papers dealt with only the normal or the small tilted mode. But the most errors of the peg-in-hole process happened in the big tilted mode. This problem is analyzed and simulated in this paper using the force/torque sensor and vision senor. In the normal mode, fuzzy logic is introduced to combine the data of the force/torque sensor and vision sensor. Also the whole processing algorithms and simulations are presented.

One of the main goals of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to utilize the energy of sensor nodes effectively and maximize the network lifetime. Thus, this paper proposed a routing protocol for WSNs based on virtual force disturbing mobile Sink node (VFMSR). According to the number of sensor nodes in the cluster, the average energy and the centroid factor of the cluster, a new cluster head (CH) election fitness function was designed. At the same time, a hexagonal fixed-point moving trajectory model with the best radius was constructed, and the virtual force was introduced to interfere with it, so as to avoid the frequent propagation of sink node position information, and reduce the energy consumption of CH. Combined with the improved ant colony algorithm (ACA), the shortest transmission path to Sink node was constructed to reduce the energy consumption of long-distance data transmission of CHs. The simulation results showed that, compared with LEACH, EIP-LEACH, ANT-LEACH and MECA protocols, VFMSR protocol was superior to the existing routing protocols in terms of network energy consumption and network lifetime, and compared with LEACH protocol, the network lifetime was increased by more than three times.

Cable force monitoring is an essential and critical part of the safety evaluation of cable-supported bridges. A reasonable cable force monitoring scheme, particularly, sensor placement related to accurate safety assessment and budget cost-saving becomes a major concern of bridge administrative authorities. This paper presents optimal sensor placement for cable force monitoring by selecting representative sensor positions, which consider the spatial correlativeness existing in the cable group. The limited sensors would be utilized for maximizing useful information from the monitored bridges. The maximum information coefficient (MIC), mutual information (MI) based kernel density estimation, as well as Pearson coefficients, were all employed to detect potential spatial correlation in the cable group. Compared with the Pearson coefficient and MIC, the mutual information is more suitable for identifying the association existing in cable group and thus, is selected to describe the spatial relevance in this study. Then, the bond energy algorithm, which collects clusters based on the relationship of surrounding elements, is used for the optimal placement of cable sensors. Several optimal placement strategies are discussed with different correlation thresholds for the cable group of Nanjing No.3 Yangtze River Bridge, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper suggests the sensor-less speed control of PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) without the position sensor of oil-free air compressor. It estimated d and q axis back electro motive force using Back-EMF (Electro motive Force) observer to control sensor-less speed of PMSM. Also it used the method that tracks the information of rotor position and speed using PLL (Phase Locked Loop) based on estimated d and q axis Back-EMF. The sensor-less speed control of PMSM for oil air compressor application is carried out with the introduced rotor position and speed tracking method. In this paper, the experimental characterization of the sensor-less drive is provided to verify the accuracy of the estimated position and the performance of sensor-less control is analyzed by results obtained from the experiment. Moreover, the potential of PMSM sensor-less drive in industrial application such as compressor drive is also examined.
