This paper presents the design concept, theoretical investigation, and fabrication of a six-degree of freedom (6-DOF) turbulent flow micro sensor utilizing the piezoresistive effect in silicon. Unlike other flow sensors, which typically measure just one component of wall shear stress, the proposed sensor can independently detect six components of force and moment on a test particle in a turbulent flow. By combining conventional and four-terminal piezoresistors in Si (111), and arranging them suitably on the sensing area, the total number of piezoresistors used in this sensing chip is only eighteen, much fewer than the forty eight piezoresistors of the prior art piezoresistive 6-DOF force sensor.
Ensuring the designed prestress force is very important for the safety of prestressed concrete bridge. The loss of prestress force in tendon could significantly reduce load carrying capacity of the structure. In this study, an automated prestress-loss monitoring system for prestressed concrete girder using PZT-interface and wireless impedance sensor node is presented. The following approaches are carried out to achieve the objective. Firstly, wireless impedance sensor nodes are designed for automated impedance-based monitoring technique. The sensor node is mounted on the high-performance Imote2 sensor platform to fulfill high operating speed, low power requirement and large storage memory. Secondly, a smart PZT-interface designed for monitoring prestress force is described. A linear regression model is established to predict prestress-loss. Finally, a system of the PZT-interface interacted with the wireless sensor node is evaluated from a lab-scale tendon-anchorage connection of a prestressed concrete girder.
In multi-axis force sensor, compliance matrices representing structural behaviour of internal sensor bodies play an important role in decoupled sensing and accuracy, Recently, error propagation through compliance matrices has been studied via approximation approach. However the upper bound of measured force error has not been known. In this paper, error propagation in force sensing is analysed in a unified way when both strain measurement error and compliance matrix error exist, and the upper bound of the measured force error is derived exactly(not approximately). The analysis is examined through a numerical example.
This paper proposes a structure of a variable impedance control system based on sensor-less external force estimator of industrial manipulators for cyber physical production systems (CPPS). To implement CPPS, a feedback system is constructed by using the robot operating system (ROS) and an external force estimator which is designed to measure the external force applied to the manipulator without a force sensor. Based on the robot dynamics, the robot-human cooperating system for the cyber physics production system is implemented through a controller that changes the impedance characteristics of the manipulator according to the situation using the external force estimator. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control system.
In this lecture, we reviewed the principle and types of force sensors with strain gages, tactile sensors based on MEMS and force sensor as well as nano force sensors. Also we investigated applications of force sensors for NT, BT and RT.
One of the major factors that effect sensor performance is analog noise that added in a sensor signal such as voltage. In multi-axis force sensors, error sources may be classified mainly in two groups. One is structural error due to inaccuracy of sensor body. The other error source is noise signals existing in the sensed information. This paper presents a brief review about the principle of multi-axis force sensors, and then proposes a method that can reduce the effect of noise signal to sensor performance. The method is to convert analog voltage signal to digital numbers near sensor body and then to read these digital signals and conduct signal processing in the computer. By this way, we can eliminate a bad effect of electromagnetic wave emitted from computer and of 60 Hz noise emitted from AC source. The proposed method is investigated through experimental demonstration. The experimental results show that it improves S/N ratio of the sensor about 40 times in our experimental setup.
The forces and moments exerted on humanoid robot foot are important information for controlling or monitoring the robot. Multi-axis force/moment sensor can be installed under humanoid robot foot to measure forces and moments. The sensor should have large stiffness to support the robot weight and small size not to disturb the motion of the robot. In this paper, we designed a 6-aixs force/moment sensor which has good accuracy, large measuring range, and new compact structure. In addition, the proposed sensor is evaluated using analytical method and FEM(Finite Elements Method) method. Finally, it turned out that it has good performance.
The force/torque sensor for robot is developed. The compliance algorithm for peg-in-hole insertion task using the forec/troque sensor is developed. The system consists of an IBM PC, robot, force/torque sensor, strain meter, A/D board, and interface board. The IBM PC functions as a main processor and the robot controller as a slave processor. The sensor is constructed to measure $T_x$, $T_y$, $F_z$ which are necessary to precisely execute a peg-in-hole insertion task by SCARA type assembly robot. The outputs of sensor are analyzed. On the basis of the analysis, compliance algorithm for peg-in-hole insertion task is developed. Some comments concerning the development of wrist force/torque sensor and compliance algorithm are given.
In this study, we propose a wearable force sensor using 3D printed mold and liquid metal. Liquid metal, such as Galinstan, is one of the promising functional materials in stretchable electronics known for its intrinsic mechanical and electronic properties. The proposed soft force sensor measures the external force by the resistance change caused by the cross-sectional area change. Fused deposition modeling-based 3D printing is a simple and cost-effective fabrication of resilient elastomers using liquid metal. Using a 3D printed microchannel mold, 3D multichannel Galinstan microchannels were fabricated with a serpentine structure for signal stability because it is important to maintain the sensitivity of the sensor even in various mechanical deformations. We performed various electro-mechanical tests for performance characterization and verified the signal stability while stretching and bending. The proposed sensor exhibited good signal stability under 100% longitudinal strain, and the resistance change ranged within 5% of the initial value. We attached the proposed sensor on the finger joint and evaluated the signal change during various finger movements and the application of external forces.
