The flow through a centrifugal compressor impeller was calculated using the 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes solution method. A control volume method based on a rotating curvilinear coordinate system was used to solve the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and a standard k-.epsilon. model was used to obtain eddy viscosity. Numerical results and experimental data were compared for the overall performance of the impeller, the pressure distributions along the shroud wall and the detailed flowfields at the design and off-design conditions, which showed good coincidence. The flow through the impeller is complex with the curvature of the streamlines and rotation. The development of secondary flows and the jet-wake flow characteristics, which is the main source of flow loss, was discussed. Calculation results show quite different patterns as the flow rate changes.
Complete prediction of second order permeability tensor for three dimensional circular braided preform is critical to understand the resin transfer molding process of composites. The permeability can be predicted by considering resin flow through the multi-axial fiber structure. In this study, permeability tensor for a 3-D circular braided preform is calculated by solving a boundary problem of a periodic unit cell. Flow field through the unit cell is obtained by using a 3-D finite volume method (FVM) and Darcy's law is utilized to obtain permeability tensor. Flow analysis for two cases that a fiber tow is regarded as impermeable solid and permeable porous medium is carried out respectively. It is found that the flow within the intra-tow region of the braided preform is negligible if inter-tow porosity is relatively high but the flow through the tow must be considered when the porosity is low. To avoid checkerboard pressure field and improve the efficiency of numerical computation, a new interpolation function for velocity variation is proposed on the basis of analytic solutions. Permeability of the braided preform is measured through a radial flow experiment and compared with the permeability predicted numerically.
This paper is the experimental study to estimate the influence of various design parameters on the performance of mufflers with perforated tubes and through-flow partitions. Muffler types considered in the present work include through-flow chamber, through-flow chamber with partition, and cross-flow chamber. The influences of the design parameters on the performance of the mufflers can be outlined as follows. In the case of the through-f]ow type mufflers, increasing the tube thickness and the hole diameter of the perforated tubes does not change the maximum value of the transmission loss but decrease the cutoff frequency. In the case of the through-flow with partitions type mufflers, it is shown that combining a fe w short chambers and long chambers can modify the frequency locations of the resonance frequencies to optimize the performance of the mufflers. For the case of the cross-flow type mufflers, it is shown that the transmission loss of the mufflers is mainly affected by the lower porosity when the porosities are different in both sides of the plug. Overall, it is shown that performance of the through-flow type with partition type mufflers is excellent in the lower frequency region, where the cross-flow type mufflers have better performance in the higher frequency region.

This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flows through parti¬tioned opening and two-opening. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with the two types of small open¬ing on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. In the case of exchange flow through the partitioned opening, flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air within the opening are separated by vertical partition, and the two flows interact out of entrance and exit of the opening. Therefore, an experiment of the exchange flow through two-opening is made to investigate effect of the fluids interaction of the partitioned opening sys¬tem. As a result of comparison of the exchange flow rates between the two types of the opening system, it is found that the exchange flow rate of the two-opening system is larger than that of the partitioned opening system due to absence of the effect of fluids interaction. Finally, the fluids interaction between the upward and downward flows through the partitioned opening is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow.
Flow rate measurement uncertainties of the ultrasonic flow meter are generally influenced by many different factors, such as Reynolds number, flow distortion, turbulence intensity, wall surface roughness, velocity integration method along the acoustic paths, and transducer installation method, etc. Of these influencing factors, one of the most important uncertainties comes from the velocity integration method. In the present study, a optimization weighting factor method for 5-chord, which is given by a function of the chord locations of acoustic paths, is employed to obtain the mean velocity in the flow through a pipe. The power law profile is assumed to model the axi-symmetric pipe flow and its results are compared with the present weighting factor concept. For an asymmetric pipe flow, the Salami flow model is applied to obtain the velocity profiles. These theoretical methods are also compared with the previous Gaussian, Chebyshev, and Tailor methods. The results obtained show that for the fully developed turbulent pipe flows with surface roughness effects, the present weighting factor method is much less sensitive than Chebyshev and Tailor methods, leading to a better reliability in flow rate measurement using the ultrasonic flow meters.
Flow through a turbine flow meter is simulated by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The solution method is based on the pseudo-compressibility approach and uses an implicit-upwind differencing scheme together with the Gauss-Seidel line relaxation method. The equations are solved steadily in rotating reference frames, and the centrifugal force and the Coriolis force are added to the equation of motion. The standard $k-{\epsilon}$model is employed to evaluate turbulent viscosity. Computational results yield quantitative as well as qualitative information on the design of turbine flow meters by showing the distributions of pressure and velocity around the turbine blades.
The characteristics Prandt1-Meyer expansion of supersonic flow with condensation through a wavy wall in a channel are investigated by experiment and numerical direct marching method of characteristics. In the present study, for the case of moist air flow in the type of indraft supersonic wind tunnel, the dependency of location of formation and reflection of the oblique shock wave generated by the wavy wall and the distribution of flow properties, on the specific humidity and temperature at the entrance of wavy wall and the attack angle of the wavy wall to the main stream is clarified by schlieren photograph, distribution of static pressure and Mach number, and plots of numerical results. Also, we confirm that the wavy wall plays an important key role in the formation of oblique shock wave, and that the effect of condensation on the flow field appears apparently.
A dependence of weighting parameter in preconditioning method for solving low Mach number flow with incompressible flow nature is investigated. The present preconditioning method employs a finite-difference method applied Roe‘s flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL-TVD scheme and 4th-order Runge-Kutta method in curvilinear coordinates. From the computational results of benchmark flows through a 2-D backward-facing step duct it is confirmed that there exists a suitable value of the weighting parameter for accurate and stable computation. A useful method to determine the weighting parameter is introduced. With this method, high accuracy and stable computational results were obtained for the flow with low Mach number in the range of Mach number less than 0.3.

In this study, to investigate in-cylinder tumble or swirl intake flow of a gasoline engine, the flow characteristics were examined with opening control valve (OCV) and several swirl control valves (SCV) which intensify intake flow through steady flow experiment, and also turbulent characteristics of in-cylinder flow field were investigated by 2-frame cross-correlation particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. In the investigation of intake turbulent characteristics using PIV method, the different flow characteristics were showed according to OCV or SCV figures. The OCV or SCV installed engine had higher vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy than a baseline engine, especially around the wall and lower part of the cylinder. Above all, SCV B type was superior to the others. About energy dissipation and reynolds shear stress distribution, a baseline engine had larger loss than OCV or SCV installed one because flow impinged on the cylinder wall. It should be concluded, from what has been said above, as swirl component was added to existing tumble flow adequately, it was confirmed that turbulent intensity was enlarged, flow energy was conserved effectively through the experiment. In other words, there is a suggestion that flow characteristics as these affected to in-cylinder combustion positively.
When the heat release and acoustic pressure fluctuations are generated in the combustor by irregular combustion, these fluctuations affect the mass flow rate of the propellants injected through the injectors. Also, the variations of the mass flow rate by these fluctuations again bring about irregular combustion and furthermore that is related with combustion instability. Therefore, it is very important to identify the mass variation for the pressure fluctuation on the injector and to investigate its transfer function. So, we first have studied quantifying the variation of mass flow rate generated in simplex swirl injector by injection pressure fluctuation. To acquire the transient mass flow rate in orifice with time, we have tried to measure of the flow axial velocity and liquid film thickness in orifice. The axial velocity is acquired through theoretical approach after measuring the pressure in orifice and the flow area in the orifice is measured by electric conductance method. As results, mass flow rate calculated by axial velocity and liquid film thickness measuring in orifice accorded with mass flow rate acquired by direct measuring method in the small error range within 1 percents in steady state and within 6 percents as average mass flow rate in pulsated state. Hence this method can be used to measure the mass flow rate not only in steady state but also in unsteady state because the mass flow rate in the orifice can acquire with time and this method shows very high accuracy based on the experimental results.
