  • The range of stresses experienced in subgrade soils and subbase materials in pavement under working stress conditions is below about 150㎪. Therefore, the deformational characteristics of soils at low confining pressures are important properties in the analysis and design of pavement system. Subgrade soils and subbase materials were collected from the actual pavement projects for testing. To evaluate the effect of confining pressure on modulus of those materials at low confining pressures, RC and FFRC tests were performed. Interestingly, the relationship between modulus of soils and confining pressure is more appropriate in linear space than in logarithm space at low confining pressure. Based on those results, new model fur evaluating the effects of confining pressure on modulus at low confining pressures was proposed.

  • Using shear wave velocity is more reasonable to estimate strength and integrity of rock compared with using compressional wave. It is often ambiguous to pick the dominant frequency caused by torsional wave when evaluating $V_S$ of rock specimen from FFRC method. It is also sometimes ambiguous to pick the first arrival point of S wave compared with P wave in the signals acquired from ultrasonic velocity method. Otherwise, the procedure of evaluating $V_P$ using ultrasonic velocity method and $V_L$ using FFRC method is relatively stable. Through the relationship between elastic modulus, poisson's ratio and $V_S$ can be obtained from $V_P$, $V_L$. Applicability was checked using model specimens having different material property and length and rock specimens sampled in mine area, and usefulness of proposed procedure was verified.

  • It is very important to evaluate the reliable deformational characteristics of soils not only in the analysis of geotechnical structures under working stress conditions as foundation in railroad or road system but also for the soil dynamic problems. Different testing techniques are likely to have different testing conditions as strain amplitude, stress level, loading frequency and number of loading cycles. The deformational characteristics of soils can be affected by these variables. In this paper, the effects on modulus of soils subjected to cyclic load were investigated. For the evaluation of deformational characteristics of soils subjected cyclic load, various testing such as TS, RC, TX, and FFRC tests were performed. It was shown that the modulus evaluated by various testing methods are comparable to each other fairly well when the effects of these factors were properly taken into account. For reliable evaluation, therefore, those effects on the modulus need to be considered, and measured values should be effectively adjusted to actual conditions where the soil is working.

  • In this study, flowable backfill made with weathered granite soil is tested to provide basic engineering properties that can be used as design input to overcome settlement problems in road pavement due to low stiffness of backfill which is generated by porosity of the soil. For design purpose, a proper mixing ratio is developed first. Then several test methods including FF/RC, PMT and LDWT including axial compression test are adapted for checking stiffness and measuring axial strength of the material separately that can be used for design values.

  • It is not easy to provide sufficient lead time for flood forecast in urban and small mountain basins using on-ground rain gauges, because the time concentration in those basins is too short. In urban and small mountain basins with a short lag-time between precipitation and following flood events, it is more important to secure forecast lead times by predicting rainfall amounts. The Han River Flood Control Office (HRFCO) in South Korea produces short-term rainfall forecasts using the Mcgill Algorithm for Precipitation-nowcast by Lagrangian Extrapolation (MAPLE) algorithm that converts radar reflectance of rainfall events. The Flash Flood Research Center (FFRC) in the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) installed a flash flood forecasting system using the short-term rainfall forecast data produced by the HRFCO and has provided flash flood information in a local lvel with 1-hour lead time since 2019. In this study, we addressed the flash flood forecasting system based on the radar rainfall and the assessed the accuracy of the forecasting system for the recorded flood events occurred in 2019. A total of 31 flood disaster cases were used to evaluate the accuracy and the forecast accuracy was 90.3% based on the probability of detection.
