A strain-gradient crystal plasticity finite element method(SGCP-FEM) was utilized to simulate the compressive deformation behaviors of single-slip, (111)[$10{\bar{1}}$], oriented FCC single-crystal micro-pillars with two different slip-plane inclination angles, $36.3^{\circ}$ and $48.7^{\circ}$, and the simulation results were compared with those from conventional crystal plasticity finite element method(CP-FEM) simulations. For the low slip-plane inclination angle, a macroscopic diagonal shear band formed along the primary slip direction in both the CP- and SGCP-FEM simulations. However, this shear deformation was limited in the SGCP-FEM, mainly due to the increased slip resistance caused by local strain gradients, which also resulted in strain hardening in the simulated flow curves. The development of a secondly active slip system was altered in the SGCP-FEM, compared to the CP-FEM, for the low slip-plane inclination angle. The shear deformation controlled by the SGCP-FEM reduced the overall crystal rotation of the micro-pillar and limited the evolution of the primary slip system, even at 10 % compression.
A defect could be generated in bolts for a use of oil filters for the manufacturing process and then may affect to the safety and quality in bolts. Also, fine defects may be imbedded in oil filter system. So it is very important that such defects be investigated and screened during the multiple manufacturing processes. Therefore, in order effectively to evaluate the fine defects, the FEM simulations were performed to make characterization in the crack detection of the bolts and the parameters such as number of turns of the coil, the coil size, applied frequency were calculated based on the simulation results. Simulations were carried out for the defect signal of eddy current probe. Exciter and receiver were utilized. In this paper, the FEM simulations were performed in both bobbin-type and pancake-type probe, both probes were optimized under Eddy current FEM simulations and the results of calculation were discussed.
FEM numerical models have been known to provide an extensive applicability to the field of water resources development. However, some of restrictions such as requiring considerable number of input data and numerous subprocess were the problem of using such FEM numerical models. Especially, where the model is applied to the complex coastal area, difficulties will be intensified. Therefore it is necessary that the profitable user interface, data optimization, and structured system should be developed if the models could be used effectively. In this study, it is intended that development of integrated system for simulations of FEM numerical models to give better applicability in the field of water resources development. By using integrated system which was developed in this study, it would be concluded that the efforts to need some treatments for subprocesses of the FEM numerical model were decreased and GUI environment proved to be convinient for use for the on-the-job users.

The finite element method (FEM) is typically used in the process of motor design. However, the FEM requires computation time, Therefore, decreasing the number of FEM simulations may also decrease the simulation cost. Several optimal design methods overcoming this problem have been recently studied. This paper investigates the optimal design of the magnet pole of a BLDC motor through reducing simulation cost. The optimization minimizes the magnet volume and limits the average and cogging torques to certain values. In this paper, the response surface methodology and Taguchi's table for reducing the number of FEM simulations are used to approximate two constraints. The optimization result shows that the presented strategy is satisfactorily performed.
A new methodology is presented to evaluate material properties at high strain rates and high temperatures based on orthogonal metal cutting experiments and FEM simulations. Average strain rate and average temperature found in the deformation zone are computed and flow stress data at these conditions are modified until cutting forces calculated in simulations match those determined in experiments. Material properties obtained from this method were verified by additional metal cutting simulations. Derivation from cutting forces measured in experiments was less than 10%. The feasibility of tool design using FEM simulations is also demonstrated.
In this paper, multi-pass roll forming process is simulated with a commercial FEM software. From these simulations, detects like excessive thickness decrease were estimated. And effects of springback, idle roll without force, and self-contacts between materials were also predicted. As a result, the defects of the forming process and the numbers of the roll pass can be decreased. And these analyses will be able to design the optimal roll forming process.
Taylor rod impact tests have been the subject of many theoretical and experimental investigations. This paper discusses the numerical methods for simulating the Taylor impact test, which is widely used to obtain constitutive equations and failure conditions under high-velocity collisions of materials. With this in mind, a particle-based MPM (material point method) for linear viscoelastic solid materials was implemented, and MPM simulations for viscoelastic deformation behavior were numerically verified and confirmed by comparing the MPM and FEM results. In addition, this modeling and numerical approach could be extended to more complex viscoelastic models for basic understanding and to analyze the deformation and fracture behavior of more complicated viscoelastic material systems.
In this paper, a theoretical formulation of a simplified wheel-set model for collision-induced derailments was evaluated by numerical simulations for the wheel-climb derailment and wheel-lift derailment types. The derailment types were classified into the wheel-climb derailment and the wheel-lift derailment according to the friction force direction of the wheel-flange. The wheel-climb derailment type was classified into Climb-up, Climb/Roll-over, and Roll-over-C, and wheel-lift derailment type was classified into Slip-up, Slip/Roll-over and Roll-over-L. To verify the theoretical equations derived for the wheel-climb derailment and the wheel-lift derailment, dynamic simulations using RecurDyn of Functionbay and Ls-Dyna of LSTC were performed and compared for some examples. The derailment predictions of the suggested theoretical formulation were in good agreement with those of the numerical simulations. The direction of the frictional force between the wheel-flange and the rail can be well predicted using the suggested derailment formulation at a initial derailment.

Nowadays, steel fiber reinforced concretes (SFRCs) are widely used in practical applications. Significant experimental research has thus been carried out to determine the constitutive equations that represent the behavior of SFRCs under multiaxial loadings. However, numerical modelling of SFRCs via FEM has been challenging due to the complexities of the implementation of these constitutive equations. In this study, following the literature, a plasticity model is constructed for the behavior of SFRCs that involves the Willam-Warnke failure surface with the relevant evolution laws and a non-associated flow rule for determining the plastic deformations. For the precise (yet rapid) integration of the constitutive equations, an explicit substepping scheme consisting of yield intersection and drift correction algorithms is employed and thus implemented in ABAQUS via UMAT. The FEM model includes various material parameters that are determined from the experimental data. Three sets of parameters are used in the numerical simulations. While the first set is from the experiments that are conducted in this study on SFRC specimens with various contents of steel fibers, the other two sets are from the experiments reported in the literature. The response of SFRCs under multiaxial compression obtained from various numerical simulations are compared with the experimental data. The good agreement between numerical results and the experimental data indicates that not only the adopted plasticity model represents the behavior of SFRCs very well but also the implemented integration scheme can be employed in practical applications of SFRCs.
Accurate and fast haptic simulations of deformable objects are desired in many applications such as medical virtual reality. In haptic interactions with a coarse model, the number of nodes near the haptic interaction region is too few to generate detailed deformation. Thus, local refinement techniques need to be developed. Many approaches have employed purely geometric subdivision schemes, but they are not proper in describing the deformation behavior of deformable objects. This paper presents a continuum mechanics-based finite element adaptive method to perform haptic interaction with a deformable object. This method superimposes a local fine mesh upon a global coarse model, which consists of the entire deformable object. The local mesh and the global mesh are coupled by the s-version finite element method (s-FEM), which is generally used to enhance accurate solutions near the target points even more. The s-FEM can demonstrate a reliable deformation to users in real-time.
