This paper presents a method for calculating iron losses in three-phase induction motors under the inverter supply through the field-circuit coupled time-stepping finite element method (FEM). Iron losses are calculated by using the three-term iron losses separated model and modifying the loss coefficients obtained by the iron losses curves which are provided by the manufacturer under the sinusoidal supply. Simulation results by the presented method are verified by the measured results with an error lower than 5%, confirming the validity of the proposed method. Finally, iron losses distribution of the inverter-fed three-phase induction prototype motor is shown.
This paper deals with the analysis error in the time step FEM which is applied to analyze the electric machinery. In order to calculate the error accurately, a simple inductor structure which has analytical solution is designed, and then the time step analysis for the equivalent circuit and time step FEM is performed respectively. Finally, according to the analysis methods. the results are compared and discussed.
The paper proposes a technique for reconstructing the true hardening curve of isotropic materials from ring tensile tests. Neutron irradiated 42XNM alloy tensile properties were investigated. The calculation of the true hardening curve for tensile and compression tests of standard cylindrical samples was performed at the first step. After that, the FEM-model was developed and validated using the ring tension and compression tests (with the hardening curve defined in step 1). Finally, the true hardening curve was calculated by selecting the FEM-model parameters and its validation by ring sample tests in different states using an iterative method. For these samples, experimental and calculated gauge length values were obtained, and the corresponding material's constants were estimated.

The fracture mechanics make it possible to characterize the behavior with cracking of structures using parameters quantifiable in the sense of the engineer, in particular the stress field, the size of the crack, and the resistance to cracking of the material. Any structure contains defects, whether they were introduced during the production of the part (machining or molding defects for example). The aim of this work is to determine numerically by the finite element method the stress concentration factor Kt of a plate subjected to a tensile loading containing a lateral form defect with different sizes: a semicircle of different radii, a notch with different opening angles and a crack of different lengths. The crack propagation is then determined using the extended finite element technique (X-FEM). The modeling was carried out using the ABAQUS calculation code.
This study suggests a simple, convenient and non-destructive method for investigation of the Young's modulus detection in stepped shafts which only utilizes the first-order resonant frequency in flexural mode and dimensions of structures. The method is based on the impulse excitation technique (IET) to pick up the fundamental resonant frequencies. The standard Young's modulus detection formulas for rectangular and circular cross-sections are well investigated in literatures. However, the Young's modulus of stepped shafts can not be directly detected using the formula for a beam with rectangular or circular cross-section. A response surface method (RSM) is introduced to design numerical simulation experiments to build up experimental formula to detect Young's modulus of stepped shafts. The numerical simulation performed by finite element method (FEM) to obtain enough simulation data for RSM analysis. After analysis and calculation, the relationship of flexural resonant frequencies, dimensions of stepped shafts and Young's modulus is obtained. Numerical simulations and experimental investigations show that the IET method can be used to investigate Young's modulus in stepped shafts, and the FEM simulation and RSM based IET formula proposed in this paper is applicable to calculate the Young's modulus in stepped shaft. The method can be further developed to detect mechanical parameters of more complicated structures using the combination of FEM simulation and RSM.
In the field of welding the behavior of a welded structure under consideration may be predicted via heat transfer and residual stress analysis. In order to facilitate the industrial applications of welding, numerical modeling of heat transfer and residual stress in weldment has been carried out applying Finite Element Method (FEM) and the analysis with the external load including this residual stress due to welding has been done. The present work includes the specialized finite element codes for the calculation of nonlinear heat transfer details and residual stress redistributed along with the external load in the welded structures. A basic interface, which allows models, built in commercial preprocessing package access to the data necessary to build standard input decks for these specialized FEM codes, which are not supported by commercial package. The results from the FEM codes are imported back into commercial package for visualization. In addition the residual stress values are exported to commercial package (such as ANSYS, PATRAN etc.) for further analysis with the external loads, which make the FEM codes fully applicable to the industrial purpose.
To analyze accurately the free vibration of a structure by using the finite element method (FEM), we model the structure as a numerical model with many degrees-of-freedom. However the FEM needs much computation time and storage in this case. The authors developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) for overcoming the drawback of the FEM. In this paper, the authors apply the FE-TSCM to the in-plane free vibration analysis of plates with various shapes. Two numerical examples, a rectangular plate and a triangular plate, are used to compare the results of the FE-TSCM and the FEM. Through the numerical calculation, we confirm that the FE-TSCM can be applied to the plates with various shapes and is effective to in-plane free vibration analysis of plates.

The authors developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) for overcoming the drawback of the FEM. In this paper, we propose the haptic system for the real-time virtual environment-control, which controls the sense of sight, hearing and touch. In order to maintain the stable haptic system in this study, we apply the proxy force rendering algorithm and the real-time graphic deformation algorithm based on the FEM. The applied proxy algorithm makes the system possible to be more stable and prompt with a virtual object. Moreover, the haptic rendering algorithm is applied to work out a problem that the tactual transaction-period is different from the graphic transaction- period. The graphic deformation algorithm is developed in the real-time using the deformed FEM. To apply the FEM, a deformed material-model is produced and then the graphic deformation with this model is able to force. Consequently, the graphic rendering algorithm is deduced by the real-time calculation and simplification because the purpose of this system is to transact in the real time. Applying this system to the PC, we prove that it is possible to deform the graphics and transact the haptic. Finally we suggest the variable simulation program to show the efficiency of this system.
