  • This paper describes the application of a coupled finite element-boundary element method (FE-BEM) to obtain the steady-state response of a piezoelectric transducer. The particular structure considered is a PZT4 disc-typed projector. The projector is three-dimensionally simulated to transduce applied electric charge on axial surfaces of the piezoelectric disc to acoustic pressure in air or in water. The directivity pattern of the acoustic field formed from the projected sound pressure is also simulated. And the displacement of the disc caused by the externally applied electric charge is shown in temporal motion. The coupled FE-BE method is described in detail.

  • Recent developments in the prediction of the contribution of windnoise to the interior SPL have opened a realm of new possibilities in terms of i) how the convective and acoustic sources terms can be identified, ii) how the interaction between the source terms and the side glass can be described and finally iii) how the transfer path from the sources to the interior of the vehicle can be modelled. This work discusses in details these three aspects of wind noise simulation and recommends appropriate methods to deliver required results at the right time based on i) simulation and experimental data availability, ii) design stage at which a decision must be made and iii) time available to deliver these results. Several simulation methods are used to represent the physical phenomena involved such as CFD, FEM, BEM, FE/SEA Coupled and SEA. Furthermore, a 1D and 2D wavenumber transformation is used to extract key parameters such as the convective and the acoustic component of the turbulent flow from CFD and/or experimental data whenever available. This work focuses on the validation of the wind noise source characterization method and the vibro-acoustic models on which the wind noise sources are applied.

  • Deep-water sonar transducers of FFR (Free Flooded Ring) type have been designed using a coupled FE-BEM. The proposed sonar transducers are composed of piezoelectric ceramic tubes and structural steel materials for simple fabrication. In order to have an omnidirectional beam pattern around 30 kHz, a conic steel is placed below a piezoelectric tube or a steel disc is placed between two piezoelectric tubes. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Various results are available such as directivity patterns and transmitting voltage responses. The most optimal structure and dimensions of the steel material were calculated, so that the beam patterns of the sonar transducers had +/- 3 dB omnidirectivity at 30 kHz.

  • A high power deep-water sonar transducer of FFR (Free Flooded Ring) type has been designed using a coupled FE-BEM. The present sonar transducer is composed of rectangular piezoelectric ceramics and pie-shaped steels (or the advantage of simple fabrication. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state frequency response for TX and RX displacement modes, directivity patterns, back-scattering patterns, bandwidths, transmitting voltage responses and receiving sensitivity responses. The TV response shows a very high acoustic pressure of 150 dB/lV (ref $1{\mu}Pa$ at 1m) at 1900 Hz. This ultra high power response of the sonar transducer indicates a new possibility of the sonar transducer development.

  • A piezoelectric flextentional deep-water sonar transducer has been simulated using a coupled FE-BEM. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with extern리 electrical excitation conditions as well as external acoustic pressure loading conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state frequency response for RX and TX, displacement modes, directivity patterns, back-scattering patterns, resonant frequencies, bandwidths, quality factors, transmitting voltage (TV) responses, input receiving sensitivity (RS) responses. White the present barrel-stave typed sonar transducer of the piezoelectric material is being simulated, the external surface of the transducer is modified in order to allow the same water pressure to be applied to the inner and the outer surfaces of the transducer. With this modification for deep-water application, the resonance frequency of the modified flextentional sonar transducer becomes much lower than that of the unmodified flextentional sonar transducer. The results of the present sonar transducer modelling are also compared with those of a commercial package such as ATILA.

The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state displacement modes, underwater directivity patterns, resonant frequencies, bandwidths, quality factors, output acoustic powers and transmitting voltage responses. It is shown that the present barrel-stave sonar transducer of the piezoelectric material produces flextentional displacements which could be related with higher output power, lower quality factor and more omnidirectional beam pattern than other types of sonar transducers. The results of the present sonar transducer modelling are also compared with those of a commercial package such as ATILA.

  • The finite element method (FEM) is suitable for the analysis of a complicated region that includes nonlinear materials, whereas the boundary element method (BEM) is naturally effective for analyzing a very large region with linear characteristics. Therefore, considering the advantages in both methods, a novel algorithm for the alternate application of the FEM and BEM to magnetic field problems with the open boundary is presented. This approach avoids the disadvantages of the typical numerical methods with the open boundary problem such as a great number of unknown values for the FEM and non-symmetric matrix for the Hybrid FE-BE method. The solution of the overall problems is obtained by iterative calculations accompanied with the new acceleration method.

  • In this paper, The hybrid method in order to reduce the unknown varible for 3D eddy current calculation is proposed. we adopt the current vector potential(T) and the magnetic scalar potential($\Omega$) as field variable, and adopt image charge method for symetric boundary condition in BEM. We apply the hybrid method to electromagnet for levitation system and analyze the charateristics of eddy current airgap flux distribution, attractive and magnetic drag force according to velocity.

  • Recently, reducing underwater radiated noise (URN) of ships has become an environmental issue to protect marine wildlife. URN of ships can be predicted by various methods considering its generating mechanism and frequency ranges. For URN prediction due to ship structural vibration in low frequency range, the fluid-structure interaction analysis technique based on finite element and boundary element methods (FE/BEM) is regarded as an useful technique. In this paper, URN due to a double bottom-shaped structure vibration has been numerically investigated based on a coupled method of FE/BEM to enhance the prediction accuracy of URN due to the vibration of real ship engine room structure. Acoustic radiation efficiency and URN transfer function in case of vertical harmonic excitation on the top plate of double bottom structure have been evaluated. Using the results, the validity of an existing empirical formula for acoustic radiation efficiency estimation and a simple URN transfer function, which are usually adopted for URN assessment in initial design stage, is discussed.
