This paper provides the methods to estimate the burst pressures of the pipes with defects, based on finite element analyses. FE codes are frequently adopted for the simulations of the burst tests of the pipes with defects. However, those do not give the burst pressure directly. Because the post-processing should be followed; determination of the fracture strains in accordance with triaxialities, monitoring the strains of pipes, etc. In the present work, these efforts are implemented in the user subroutine UHARD within the general-purpose FE code, ABAQUS. Four fracture criterions are introduced to estimate the burst pressure of pipes, and a simple fracture strain estimate is also developed. FE analyses for the pipe with gouge and corrosion are performed, and the results are compared with the experiment results.
The aim of this paper is to investigate how the soil-structure interaction affects sloshing response of the elevated tanks. For this purpose, the elevated tanks with two different types of supporting systems which are built on six different soil profiles are analyzed for both embedded and surface foundation cases. Thus, considering these six different profiles described in well-known earthquake codes as supporting medium, a series of transient analysis have been performed to assess the effect of both fluid sloshing and soil-structure interaction (SSI). Fluid-Elevated Tank-Soil/Foundation systems are modeled with the finite element (FE) technique. In these models fluid-structure interaction is taken into account by implementing Lagrangian fluid FE approximation into the general purpose structural analysis computer code ANSYS. A 3-D FE model with viscous boundary is used in the analyses of elevated tanks-soil/foundation interaction. Formed models are analyzed for embedment and no embedment cases. Finally results from analyses showed that the soil-structure interaction and the structural properties of supporting system for the elevated tanks affected the sloshing response of the fluid inside the vessel.

We investigate magnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of CoFe thin films, using VASP code in GGA. In this study Co-terminated and Fe-terminated 5-layer CoFe thin films are employed. The Co-terminated CoFe thin film shows two total energy minima at 2-dimensional lattice constants of $2.45{\AA}$ and $2.76{\AA}$. The film of $2.45{\AA}$ has fcc-like structure and the film of $2.76{\AA}$ has bcc-like structure similarly to a bulk CoFe alloy. And the fcc-like film is more stable by the energy difference of about 160 meV compared to the bcc-like film. The Fe-terminated CoFe film shows very complicated behaviour of total energy which is suspected to be closely related to its complex magnetic structure. The Co-terminated CoFe film of $2.76{\AA}$ shows perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA), while the film of 2.45 does parallel MCA. The Fe-terminated CoFe film also exhibits similar MCA behaviour.
Lightweight metallic truss structures with open, periodic cell are currently being investigated because of their multi-functionality such as thermal management and load bearing. The Kagome truss PCM has been proved that it has higher resistance to plastic buckling, more plastic deformation energy and lower anisotropy than other truss PCMs. The subject of this paper is an examination of the failure mechanism of Wire woven Bulk Kagome(WBK). To address this issue, the out-of-plane compressive responses of the WBK has been measured and compared with theoretical and finite element (FE) predictions. For the experiment, 2 multi-layered WBK are fabricated and 3 specimens are prepared. For the theoretical analysis, the brazed joints of each wire in WBK are modeled as the pin-joint. Then, the peak stress of compressive behavior and elastic modulus are calculated based on the equilibrium equation and energy method. The mechanical structure with five by five cells on the plane are constructed is modeled using the commercial code, PATRAN 2005. and the analysis is achieved by the commercial FE code ABAQUS version 6.5 under the incremental theory of plasticity.
A reliability analysis of the axial compressive load bearing capacity of postfire reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets was presented. A 3D finite element (FE) model was built for heat transfer analysis using software ABAQUS. Based on the temperature distribution obtained from the FE analysis, the residual axial compressive load bearing capacity of RC columns was worked out using the section method. Formulas for calculating the residual axial compressive load bearing capacity of the columns after fire exposure and the axial compressive load bearing capacity of postfire columns retrofitted with CFRP sheets were developed. Then the Monte Carlo method was used to analyze the reliability of the axial compressive load bearing capacity of the RC columns retrofitted with CFRP sheets using a code developed in MATLAB. The effects of fire exposure time, load ratio, number of CFRP layers, concrete cover thickness, and longitudinal reinforcement ratio on the reliability of the axial compressive load bearing capacity of the columns after fire were investigated. The results show that within 60 minutes of fire exposure time, the reliability index of the RC columns after retrofitting with two layers of CFRPs can meet the requirements of Chinese code GB 50068 (GB 2001) for safety level II. This method is effective and accurate for the reliability analysis of the axial load bearing capacity of postfire reinforced concrete columns retrofitted with CFRP.

The dimensional accuracy of a final product is mainly affected by elastic die deformation during the forging and elastic recovery after the ejection in cold forging process. The investigations on elastic recovery are not so much as those of elastic die deformation. The elastic recovery can be determined by using the elastic-plalstic finite element analysis, but, this method has some limits such as poor conver- gence and long computational time, etc. In this paper, a theoretical analysis for predicting the elastic recovery of a final product in axi-symmetric forging process by using the rigid-plastic finite element method is presented. The rigid-plastic finite element analysis of a cold forward extrusion process involving loading, ejecting process is accomplished by rigid-plastic FE code, DEFORM. The effect of elastic die deformation on the final product dimenmsion is also considered. The calculated elastic recovery is compared is compared with the analysis result of elastic-plastic FE code. ABAQUS.
The creep and consolidation behaviors of clays subjected to thermal cycles are of fundamental importance in the application of energy geostructures. This study aims to numerically investigate the physical mechanisms for the temperature-triggered volume change of saturated clays. A recently developed thermodynamic framework is used to derive the thermo-mechanical constitutive model for clays. Based on the model, a fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) finite element (FE) code is developed. Comparison with experimental observations shows that the proposed FE code can well reproduce the irreversible thermal contraction of normally consolidated and lightly overconsolidated clays, as well as the thermal expansion of heavily overconsolidated clays under drained heating. Simulations reveal that excess pore pressure may accumulate in clay samples under triaxial drained conditions due to low permeability and high heating rate, resulting in thermally induced primary consolidation. Results show that four major mechanisms contribute to the thermal volume change of clays: (i) the principle of thermal expansion, (ii) the decrease of effective stress due to the accumulation of excess pore pressure, (iii) the thermal creep, and (iv) the thermally induced primary consolidation. The former two mechanisms mainly contribute to the thermal expansion of heavily overconsolidated clays, whereas the latter two contribute to the noticeable thermal contraction of normally consolidated and lightly overconsolidated clays. Consideration of the four physical mechanisms is important for the settlement prediction of energy geostructures, especially in soft soils.

Stiffened plates with high slenderness parameters show large out-of-plane deflections, due to elastic buckling, which may occur before the plates reach their ultimate strength. From a serviceability point of view, restriction of out-of-plane deflections exceeding the fabrication tolerance is of primary importance. Compressive strength at the serviceability limit state (SLS) for slender stiffened plates under uniaxial stress was investigated through nonlinear elasto-plastic finite element analysis, considering both geometric and material nonlinearity. Both normal and high-performance steel were considered in the study. The SLS was defined based on a deflection limit and an elastic buckling strength. Probabilistic distributions of the SLS strengths were obtained through Monte Carlo simulations, in association with the response surface method. On the basis of the obtained statistical distributions, partial safety factors were proposed for SLS. Comparisons with the ultimate strength of different design codes e.g. Japanese Code, AASHTO, and Canadian Code indicate that AASHTO and Canadian Code provide significantly conservative design, while Japanese Code matches well with a 5% non-exceedance probability for compressive strength at SLS.

This paper is a study on the coupled load analysis using MSC/Nastran superelement method.
After selecting the hunch vehicle, coupled load analysis is performed. From the results of
coupled load analysis the loads and displacements on the major parts of satellite structure are
calculated Based on the loads and displacements, the safety of satellite structure is judged.
Coupled load analysis has been executed using MSC/Nastran DMAP code so far. Because DMAP
code was very complicated and long in 1ength it was difficult to analyze and modify the DMAP
code. To solve out these problems, coupled load analysis was executed using MSC/Nastran 2005
superelemnt method. At first, satellite FE-model was converted to the Craig-Bampton model using
MSC/Nastran 2005 superelement method and verified Finally, coupled load analysis was
performed using satellite Craig-Bampton model and launch vehicle FE-model and verified.

Recent industrial requirements for highly precise shape processing have brought the electric discharge machining (EDM) in great need. High precision in EDM is primarily achieved by high performance controllers. However there exists inherent precision loss due to structural micro-deformation. On this background, we study structural deformation characteristics of wire cut EDM via finite element (FE) analysis and axiomatic design. Two different wire cut EDMs are selected as analysis models. 3D CAD package I-Deas is first used to construct FE models of wire cut EDMs, and then ABAQUS FE code is used for following structural analysis. Pertinency of FE mesh refinement is discussed in terms of η -factor. It is shown that performance accuracy of EDM depends strongly on the structural characteristics. Some design enhancements are suggested in an axiomatic design point of view. Finally we provide weight and temperature induced displacement discrepancies between wire end points as position functions of each subframe.
