  • The torsion beam axle type is widely used in the rear suspension for small passenger car because of low cost, good performance and etc. The FE and dynamic analysis using the computer are very helpful for the efficiency of the torsion beam design. First of all, the reliability on the computational model must be verified for the analysis. In this study, The FE model of the torsion beam was verified according to comparison with he test data. And after making the flexible body using the FE model, the dynamic characteristic of the tubular type torsion beam axles was compared with that of the V-beam type.

  • This paper describes a novel automated analysis system for bellows of piping system. An automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation technique, which is based on the fuzzy theory and computational geometry technique, is incorporated into the system, together with one of commercial FE analysis codes and one of commercial solid modelers. In this system, a geometric model, i.e. an analysis model, is first defined using a commercial solid modelers for 3-D shell structures. Node is generated if its distance from existing node points is similar to the node spacing function at the point. The node spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay triangulation technique is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. The triangular elements are converted to quadrilateral elements. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several analysis for bellows of piping system.

  • In the multi-stage shape drawing process, the most important aspect for the economy is the correct design of the various drawing stage. For most of the products commonly available round or square materials can be used as initial material. However, special products should be pre-rolled. This study proposes a process design method of multi-stage shape drawing process for producing cross roller guide. Firstly, a standard classification of shape drawing process is suggested based on the requirement of pre-rolling process. And a design method is proposed to design the intermediate die shape. The process design method is applied to design the multi-stage shape drawing process for producing cross roller guide. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed design method is verified by FE-analysis and shape drawing experiment.

  • Condenser tubes are mainly produced by precision extrusion with a porthole die and are used in the flow pass of refrigerant cooling systems in automobiles. The recent technical trend of condenser tube requires the tube to be of more multi cellizing, high strength and small size, and to increase the heat transfer area and heat efficiency. Hence, this paper is shown that the results of FE-simulation are in good agreement with the experimental ones. Finally, the extrusion die shape is proposed through analysis of FE-simulation and performance of trial extrusion. Chamber shape dimension and initial temperatures of die is adjusted analysis results. And the possibility of extrusion is estimated that forming load, welding pressure and stress analysis of die in this paper. The validity of simulated results was verified into extrusion experiments on the condenser tubes.

  • This paper presents a finite element (FE) analysis of the torsional rigidity of a two-stage cycloid drive. The cycloid disk makes contact with a number of pin-rollers simultaneously and eccentric shafts transmit not only torque of the spur gear stage to the cycloid disk, but also that of the cycloid disk to the output disk. Contacts between the disk and pin-rollers are simplified as linear spring elements, and the bearing of eccentric shaft is modeled as a rigid ring that has frictional contact to the disk and an elastic support. FE analysis for an ideal solid cycloid drive was performed and verified by a theoretical calculation. Accurate contact forces were then estimated by iterating between FE analysis for contact forces and Hertz theory calculations for nonlinear contact stiffness. In addition, torsional rigidity of the cycloid drive is analyzed to show that the bearing and nonlinear Hertz contact theory should be considered in analysis and design of a cycloid drive, which was verified with experiments. Finally, the effects of contact stiffness, bearing stiffness and cycloid disk structural stiffness according to the cycloid disk rotation on the torsional rigidity were investigated.

  • A strength problem of propeller blades for large container ships at astern condition has been occasionally reported due to the application of a highly skewed propeller which can reduce the hull surface fluctuation forces. A finite element analysis code for propeller blade was developed and utilized since 1985. Recently, however, further fine mesh modeling for finite element analysis is required to yield higher accuracy in the analysis. The present study shows an application of FE analysis code to the highly skewed propeller for large container ships. Results of FE analysis show that the number of FE mesh affects largely on strength, and also the calculated strength with fine mesh gives good agreements to those of other FEM codes. A method to enlarge strength near the trailing edge was introduced considering the strength criterion on the blade.

  • This paper presents the design and finite-element(FE) analysis of an axial-flux permanent-magnet synchronous generator using neodymium-iron-boron(NdFeB) magnets for directly coupled wind turbines. For the high energy density and light weight, an axial-flux permanent-magnet(PM) generator type is used. The simple magnetic equivalent circuit approach is used for initial design iteration, and the finite-element method is applied to analyze the detailed characteristics.

  • This paper presents a finite element (FE) simulation of eccentrically loaded lightweight aggregate concrete-encased steel (LACES) columns with H-shaped steel sections, analytical equations are also established to estimate the columns' axial and bending moment interaction capacities. The validity of the proposed models is checked by comparing the results with experimental data. Good agreements between the test and proposed models' results are found with acceptable agreements. Moreover, design parameters, including the lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) strength, eccentricity, column slenderness ratio, and confinement, are studied using the FE analysis, and their efficiency factors are discussed. The results show that the ultimate axial capacity of the LACES composite columns subjected to eccentric loading is negatively affected by the increase in the columns' height, but it is positively affected by the increase of the confinement. Increasing the eccentricity and columns' height reduced the columns'stiffness. In addition, the ultimate capacity of the LACES column is significantly influenced by the LWAC strength and eccentricity, where the ultimate capacity of the LACES column is significantly increased by increasing LWAC strength, and it is remarkably decreased by increasing the eccentricity. When the eccentricity changed from zero to 70 mm, the ultimate axial capacity and stiffness decreased by 67.97% and 63.56%, respectively.
