Finite element (FE) model updating is a procedure to minimize the differences between analytical and experimental results, which can be usually posed as an optimization problem. This paper aims to introduce a hybrid optimization algorithm (GA-SA), which consists of a Genetic algorithm (GA) stage and an Adaptive Simulated Annealing (ASA) stage, to FE model updating for a shrunk shaft. A good agreement of the first four natural frequencies has been achieved obtained from GASA based updated model (FEgasa) and experiment. In order to prove the validity of GA-SA, comparisons of natural frequencies obtained from the initial FE model (FEinit), GA based updated model (FEga) and ASA based updated model (FEasa) are carried out. Simultaneously, the FRF comparisons obtained from different FE models and experiment are also shown. It is concluded that the GA, ASA, GA-SA are powerful optimization techniques which can be successfully applied to FE model updating, the natural frequencies and FRF obtained from all the updated models show much better agreement with experiment than that obtained from FEinit model. However, FEgasa is proved to be the most reasonable FE model, and also FEasa model is better than FEga model.
Aircraft flutter analysis model consists of dynamic FE model and aerodynamic model. Dynamic FE model is composed of stiffness and mass model, and is used for the prediction of normal mode characteristics of the structure. Since aircraft flutter analysis is normally performed in the modal domain, dynamic FE model shall be constructed to describe the modal characteristics of the structure with sufficient accuracy. In this study, dynamic FE modeling method was described using full airframe FE model and structural and system weight data for aircraft flutter analysis. In addition, full airframe dynamic FE model for composite small aircraft was constituted for normal mode and flutter analysis, and the mass modeling results were compared with the target weight data to validate the mass modeling method proposed. Finally, full airframe flutter analysis of composite small aircraft was performed with the dynamic FE model and the aerodynamic model composed.
In this paper, we propose a 2D-FE model in single impact with combined physical factors to obtain a unique residual stress by shot peening. Applied physical parameters include elastic-plastic deformation of shot ball, material damping coefficients, strain rate, dynamic friction coefficients. Single impact FE model consists of 2D axisymmetric elements. The FE model with combined factors showed converged and unique distributions of surface stress, maximum compressive residual stress and deformation depth. Further, in contrast to the FE models with rigid shot and elastic deformable shot, FE model with plastic deformable shot produces residual stresses very close to experimental solutions by X-ray diffraction. We therefore validated the 2D FE model with combined peeing factors and plastic deformable shot. This FE model will be a base of the 3D FE model for residual stresses by multi-impact shot peening.
An accurate finite element (FE) model of a structure is essential for predicting reliably its dynamic characteristics. Such a model is used to predict the effects of structural modifications for dynamic design of the structure. These modifications may be imposed by design alterations for operating reasons. Most of the model updating techniques neglect damping and so these updated models can't be used for accurate prediction of vibration amplitudes. This paper deals with the basic formulation of damped finite element model updating method and its use for structural dynamic modifications. In this damped damped finite element model updating method, damping matrices are updated along with mass and stiffness matrices. The damping matrices are updated by updating the damping coefficients. A case involving actual measured data for the case of F-shaped test structure, which resembles the skeleton of a drilling machine is used to evaluate the effectiveness of damped FE model updating method for accurate prediction of the vibration levels and thus its use for structural dynamic modifications. It can be concluded from the study that damped updated FE model updating can be used for structural dynamic modifications with confidence.
In this paper, the development of a new optimization software for finite element model updating of engineering structures titled as FemUP is described. The program is used for computational FEM model updating of structures depending on modal testing results. This paper deals with the FE model updating procedure carried out in FemUP. The theoretical exposition on FE model updating and optimization techniques is presented. The related issues including the objective function, constraint function, different residuals and possible parameters for FE model updating are investigated. The issues of updating process adopted in FemUP are discussed. The ideas of optimization to be used in FE model updating application are explained. The algorithm of Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) is explored which will be used to solve the optimization problem. The possibilities of the program are demonstrated with a three dimensional steel frame model. As a result of this study, it can be said that SQP algorithm is very effective in model updating procedure.
In preliminary ship design, a parametric study is a more realistic way to explore design space and analyze design problem than an optimization technique due to time-consuming computational work or a difficulty in incorporating all constraints into the optimization formulation. In the parametric study, feasible alternatives are examined in various aspects; the best one can be selected. Among the aspects, the strength assessment by FE analysis is an essential process in the ship design. This paper proposes a system to facilitate a parametric study for FE model based on design of experiment (DOE). It works on a FE pre-processor environment and assists a user to define a parametric study by interacting with FE model. It also provides an interface module with a FE solver in order to control the input file and extract predefined FE results from the output file. Based on the proposed system, a better understating and a better design are expected to be achieved.

This paper describes a new automated analysis system for model plane engine. An automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation technique, which is based on the fuzzy knowledge processing and computational geometry technique, is incorporated into the system, together with one of commercial FE analysis codes, ANSYS, and one of commercial solid modelers, Designbase, The system allows a geometry model of concern to be automatically converted to different FE models, depending on physical phenomena of plane engine to be analyzed, i.e. deformation analysis, thermal analysis and so on. The FE models are then automatically analyzed by the FE analysis code. Among a whole process of analysis, the definition of a geometry model, the designation of local node patterns, the assignment of material properties and boundary conditions onto the geometry model are only the interactive processes to be done by a user. The interactive operations can be processed in a few minutes. The other processes which are time consuming and labour-intensive in conventional CAE systems are fully automatically performed in a personal computer environment. The proposed analysis system is successfully applied to evaluate a model plane entwine.

In this paper, we propose a 2D-FE model in single impact with combined physical factors to obtain a unique residual stress by shot peening. Applied physical parameters consist of elastic-plastic deformation of shot ball, material damping coefficients, strain rate, dynamic friction coefficients. As a kinematical parameter, there is impact velocity. We therefore validated the 2D FE model with combined peening factors and plastic deformable shot. This FE model will be a base of the 3D FE model for residual stresses by multi-impact shot peening.
The standard practice is to seismically qualify the safety related equipment and structural components used in the nuclear power plants. Among several qualification approaches the qualification by the analysis using finite element (FE) method is the most common approach used in practice. However the predictions by the FE model for a structure is known to show significant deviations from the dynamic behaviour of 'as installed' structure in many cases. Considering such limitation, few researchers have advocated re-qualification of such structures after installation at site to enhance the confidence in qualification vis-$\grave{a}$-vis plant safety. For such an exercise the validation of FE model with experimental modal data is important. A validated FE model can be obtained by the Model Updating methods in conjugation with the in-situ experimental modal data. Such a model can then be used for qualification. Seismic analysis using the updated FE model and its advantage has been presented through an example of an in-core component - a perforated horizontal tube of a nuclear reactor.
This paper describes the procedure of increasing the efficiency of experimental modal analysis and updating the quality of FE model using the scaled commercial vehicle frame. In this study, it was found that the experimental modal analysis could be more efficient when the measurements were made on the areas with high kinetic energies. Such areas could be located with the aid of FE modal analysis. Also, the number of measurement points could be decided by considering the dynamic characteristics of full FE model. The correlation of FE model and experimental modal analysis was assessed by the differences between the natural frequencies and MAC matrix, which is based on normal modes. These differences of modal parameters were reduced through the sensitivity and optimization analysis of which objective function consisted of the errors of natural frequencies and the diagonal terms of MAC matrix.
