Fire simulation was carried out for an enclosure with three doorways of $20{\times}10{\times}3m^3$ and a cleanroom of $44{\times}48{\times}10m^3$, to suggest appropriate grid size in fire simulations by using of FDS for large scale buildings. The variations of temperature and visibility with time were compared for the x and y direction grid sizes of 0.1~1.0 m (aspect ratios 0.5~5.0), fixing the z direction grid size 0.2 m. The results showed that the grid sizes 0.5 m (aspect ratio 2.5) or smaller are appropriate among the grid sizes tested, whereas 1.0 m is not acceptable. It was confirmed that estimate of the available safe egress time requires a great care due to fluctuations in temperature, visibility, etc., and further investigations on the grid size when selecting a large grid size inevitable, and on the aspect ratios for a larger grid are in need.

The present study has been performed to investigate the effect of statistical number of droplets on the simulation of the sprinkler spray using fire field model. In order to simulate the sprinkler spray characteristics, the present study uses NIST Fire Dynamics Simulator version 5.2. A group of Lagrangian particles with similar droplet characteristics, such as diameter, velocity, temperature and so on, is represented by parcel concept to decrease the total number of droplets tracked in the simulation. The present study introduces a new parameter to represent the ratio between real number of droplets and computational parcels. The dependency of the number of parcels on the fire suppression characteristics and spray patterns is quantitatively examined for different ratio between the real number of droplets and computational parcels.

In this study, an analytical evaluation of evacuation safety in typical road tunnels was conducted. The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was employed to perform fire simulations with varying fire sizes to determine the allowable evacuation time in road tunnels. Additionally, evacuation simulations were performed using Pathfinder, considering the width of barrier doors and the spacing of evacuation passageways, to calculate the required evacuation time. A comparison between the allowable and required evacuation times was conducted to assess the impact of fire size, passageway spacing, and barrier door width on tunnel evacuation safety. The results from the fire and evacuation simulations indicated that an increase in fire size and passageway spacing, along with a decrease in door width, resulted in an increase in the number of casualties. Conversely, increasing the barrier door width to more than 1.2meters led to a reduction in casualties as passageway spacing increased.

An experience based training system concerning various fire situations which may result many casualties has been required to make rapid decision and improve the responsiveness. Recently, the necessity of virtual reality (VR) based training system which can replace a dangerous full-scale fire training and be easily adopted to the training or evaluation process is increasing. This study constructed tile virtual environment according to pre-defined scenarios, utilized the FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator), three dimensional computational fire analysis program, to derive numerically simulated data on the propagation of fire. Finally, by visualizing the realistic fire and smoke behavior through virtual reality technique and implementing real-time interaction, we developed a VR-based fire training simulator. Also, in order to ensure the sense for tile real of a virtual world and reaI-time performance at the same time, we proposed appropriate data processing and space search algorithms, demonstrate d the value of proposed method through experiments.

Maritime accidents caused by a ship include collisions, sinking, stranding and fire etc. This study is intending to consider fire accidents among such diverse marine accidents. It is much likely that various sorts of fires break out because crews are living in a narrow space for long periods of time consequent on the ship's characteristic of sailing on the sea. This study carried out a simulation through the special program for fire analysis - FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) in order to find the effective evacuation time, i.e. life survival time. Particularly, this study did comparative analysis of the influence on the survival of cadets based on the collected simulation data by fire size and sort. As a result of the analysis, It was analyzed the Evacuation Allowable Limit Temperature $60^{\circ}C$ and resulted that there is no influence in evacuation by temperature. In case of visibility analysis, it reached to 5m which is the Evacuation Allowable Limit at 117 seconds under the condition of wood fire in 1MW. When there is Kerosene in 1MW, it took 92.4 seconds to reach by 5m which is the Evacuation Allowable Limit. Theoretical evacuation time for the non-tilted ship was 118.8 seconds in 1MW sized fire so it is shown that the most passengers are met the evacuation safety in case of wood fire. However, the majority of passengers could not be ensured the evacuation safety in Kerosene case.
In this study, the previous design fire curve for fire simulation was modified and re-suggested. Numerical simulations with the FDS and CFAST were performed for the n-heptane and n-octane pool fires in the ISO 9705 compartment to evaluate the prediction performances of the previous 1-stage and modified 2-stage design fire curves. The numerical results were compared with the experimental temperature and concentrations of $O_2$ and $CO_2$. The FDS and CFAST simulations with the 2-stage design fire curve showed better prediction performance for the variation of temperature and major species concentration than the simulations with 1-stage design fire curve. Especially, the simulations with the 2-stage design fire curve agreed with the experimental temperature more reasonably than the results with the 1-stage design fire curve. The FDS and CFAST simulations showed good prediction performance for the temperature in the upper layer of compartment and the results with the FDS and CFAST were similar to each other. However, the FDS and CFAST showed poor and different prediction performance for the temperature in the lower layer of compartment.
Structure of the counterflow nonpremixed flames were investigated by using Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS) and OPPDIF to evaluate FDS for simulations of the diffusion flame. FDS, employed a mixture fraction formulation, were applied to the diluted axisymmetric methane-air nonpremixed counterflow flames. Fuel concentration in the mixture of methane and nitrogen was considered as a numerical parameter in the range from 20% to 100% increasing by 10% by volume at the global strain rates of $a_g = 20S^{-l} and 80S^{-1}$ respectively. In all the computations, the gravity was set to zero since OPPDIF is not able to compute the buoyancy effects. It was shown by the axisymmetric simulation of the flames with FDS that increasing fuel concentration increases the flame thickness and decreases the flame radius. The centerline temperature and axial velocity, and the peek flame temperature showed good agreement between the both methods.

In the present study, the influences of the fire curtain and natural vent in a theater fire were investigated through the numerical simulation of a reduced-scale model of a theater fire using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). Based on a previous experimental study using the reduced-scale model, the 1/14 reduced-scale model and its conditions were constructed according to the law of similarity with a real-scale theater. Through a series of numerical simulations, the smoke movements were visualized, and the temperatures in the stage and auditorium, mass flow rate of the outflow through natural vent, and time at which smoke started moving toward the auditorium were measured and analyzed. The general trends on the effects of the fire curtain and natural vent during the theater fire predicted by the present numerical simulation were similar to the previous experimental results. For quantitative comparison of the present numerical simulation and previous experimental results, the mean percentage errors of temperatures in the stage and auditorium, and the mass flow rate of outflow through the natural vent were calculated. The present numerical simulation results showed good agreement with previous experimental results with reasonable accuracy.

Many researches have been performed to analyze the smoke movement in tunnel fires by using field model. Recently, FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator) v.4, which is one of the field model and developed from NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology), is widely used. In tunnel fires, FDS can show detail results in local point, but it has difficulties in boundary condition and taking long computing time as the number of grid increases. So, there is a need to use alternative method for tunnel fire simulation. A zone model is different kind of CFD method and solves ordinary differential equation based on conservation and auxiliary equations. It shows good macroscopic view in less computing time compared to field model. In this study, therefore, to confirm the applicability of CFAST in tunnel fire analysis, numerical simulations using CFAST are conducted to analyze smoke movement in longitudinal ventilation reduced-scale tunnel fires. Then the results are compared with experimental results. The differences of temperature and critical velocity between numerical results and experimental data are over $30^{\circ}C$ and 0.9m/s, respectively. These values are out of error range. It shows that CFAST 6.0 is hard to be used for tunnel fire simulation.
